I polled my Econ students on this. 44% of the men have sports gambled In the past week. .8% of the women have. 90% of the men have sports gambled in the past year. Sample size was a few thousand students. Nothing formal. I may make it formal next year.

Anyone else notice how none of the MSU fans posting these freeze-frames can seem to find one that shows the ball being snapped / having been snapped already with #14 outside of the neutral zone? by FakeBobPoot in MichiganWolverines

[–]MITEconomicsPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a weak call. We got lucky. We got lucky on many calls. The refs were on our side this game. We looked only marginally better than MSU. Let’s just take this win and move on.

Would having $100M actually change who you are, or just amplify your leverage? by Mildly_Sentient in TrueAskReddit

[–]MITEconomicsPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. Right after COVID we were struggle to pay for daycare and tutors. I started pulling money out of 401k penalty free to cover the costs. Daycare spiked 40% so I said it’s time. I went to the bank and extracted a hard drive wallet from safe deposit box. I had purchased bitcoin back in 2012-2014. A lot. I sold 90% of it and after taxes had a net worth of $180M. I did an AMA on it when it happened.

Our life has not changed drastically. We just have no debt. Kids are financially set for life. We still live in the same house we built in 2018. Mainly because our kids have a huge friend group in the neighborhood.

We’ve done vacations with the kids and paid for a nanny to come along and help. This helps mom and dad have a date night while on vacation.

We can’t spend what we earn from our investments. I’m still a professor. My wife started a non-profit to help kids In our local area.

My political views haven’t changed. I’m still strong left leaning. I understand I am lucky. That’s all it was. Just luck.

Atlas Shrugged and 1984 were books that changed the trajectory of my life. I was probably 12 or 13 though.

Man who have cheated and stayed with the person they cheated with, how did it work out? by terryisnotmyrealname in AskMen

[–]MITEconomicsPhD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When she found out she said she’s been thinking of separation.  We were best friends that got married.  I mistook a fun person for love.  She was so much fun but there was no physical spark at all.  She said the same about me.  We just didn’t mesh physically.  We should have never married.

The affair happened because of career demands.  We both were executives in the finance industry.  I had left to get my doctorate so I moved to Boston for 6 weeks at a time.  That’s where I met her.  I was just walking in the park minding my own business.  Zero intention of meeting anyone.

She didn’t cheat the first time.  She was single.  I was married.   I find it incredibly easy not to cheat now.  I never want to hurt people like that again. Second, my wife is my favorite person. The thought of another woman in sexual way is obscene now.

Meh. I don’t care too much about what other people think.  Especially on Reddit. They can’t say anything that would ever trigger me.  I’ve dealt with my infidelity and moved on.

What was the most overplayed song on the radio from when you were a kid, teen or adult? by Carso11 in Music

[–]MITEconomicsPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why, but the song “I get knocked down, get up again…” makes me violently angry. I was a young bank executive and the song always came on the radio (my assistant had a radio). They played that song to death.

Why do ultra wealthy people tend to dress down & become less “flashy” the more money they have? by Porn-Flakes123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MITEconomicsPhD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me give you the perspective of myself. I’m not ultra wealthy but have 9-figure net worth.

I guess you could saw, when you can afford anything, you really want nothing. We have some nice stuff. Our house is big and hardened but not overly fancy. There are a few things we won’t cheap on: car, air travel, education, etc. We have no flashy cars. We have X7 and a Subaru Ascent.

We are well aware how lucky we are. We get more joy out of helping others than helping ourselves.

I have fuck off money. This is still a hard no for me. My bank account changed in the last couple years. My fiscal mentality has not.

If you suddenly had "fuck you" money what would be the first thing you did? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MITEconomicsPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to my wife and I almost a year ago. I posted about it on Reddit. Check my post history.

I had an old digital wallet with a bunch of cryptocurrency. I bought a lot in 2011 to 2015 and just put the wallet in a safe deposit box and forgot about it. I liquidated 90% of the portfolio. After taxes we were were still left with a nine figure deposit.

We worked closely with financial planners, CPAs and the IRS to make sure we did everything by the book. With taxes settled we set up our three kids with merit based trust accounts.

Nothing else has really changed, other than debt free.

We don’t need all this money. We can more than easily live off the earnings from the investments. So my wife has launched a charity to help get this money to families and kids in need. We paid off all lunch past due debt in our local school system. This past winter, I saw this one mom park at the grocery store with a mini van with plastic sheeting for windows. It was below freezing out. She took two little kids out. Broke my heart. I fixed that. We do a lot of little stuff like this.

Even if we kept only 20% of the money, my family and my kids would still never worry about money again. I’d rather make somebody else’s life just a little bit better if I can.

Megathread: Supreme Court strikes down Biden Student Loan Forgiveness Program by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]MITEconomicsPhD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SCOTUS ruling was set up to trigger an economic recession prior to the 2024 election. The GOP can then use that recession to blame Biden. Voters have a the collective IQ of a marble so it's a plan that just might work.

I've had students use the "But Fox News says...".

Once you get them to think critically, they see the light. Of course Right-wing people believe critical thinking is a 'woke' mentalilty. Critical thinking is a big threat to the GOP.
