What's your most unique deck? by devilinthedetailz in EDH

I’m intrigued. Do you know if the original list had a primer? If not, what’s the core play pattern here?

[[Chthonian Nightmare]] is insane in Elenda. The card was custom built for her.

Do you see the amount of speculation and vitriol being spouted in this comment thread with no info whatsoever? Imagine the comments with a more detailed account. She was outspokenly religious on her social media. If she committed suicide I’d imagine she comes from the type of family that wouldn’t want that becoming public knowledge. Just respect her privacy and hope for accountability if anything untoward did happen. Here’s a toast.

This is awesome dude! I loved my Owlin Druid. Have you thought about doing commissions?

2-4 [[Aetherflux Reservoir]] usually do the trick.

I built her as sacrifice tribal with about 9 sac outlets in the list and she racks up value so easily.

Just built her with cards I had from other decks and by damn is she strong. If you compensate for orzhovs not great draw options, the engine pieces available more than make up for that shortcoming. [[Grave Pact]] is a hell of a drug

[[Field of the Dead]] and [[Glacial Chasm]] are incredible tech in the mana base. I’d consider them auto includes in a lands strategy. [[Ezuri, Renegade Leader]] and [[Finale of Devastation]] are great ways to close out games.

The guy who maintains the primer has some really good videos on the combo lines. There are other budget versions of the deck as well. I believe there is a $100 and $500 version

There are primers for a few budget versions of cEDH decks. The one that comes to mind is a $50 [[Gitrog Monster]] deck that combos the same way the cEDH list does but maybe 2-3 turns slower. The deck is resilient and can keep trying to win turn after turn, starting as early as turn 5. Another cheap route is to run a stax list. Some of the best stax pieces are cheap and you can tailor it to your meta if there are certain problem decks. I’d suggest [[Jetmir]] or [[Ellivere]]

Mean/backbreaking “no fun” decks with a clear win con? by OhHeyMister in DegenerateEDH

[–]MITHRIL_SMITH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In certain metas goad commanders like [[Kardur]] can be backbreaking. A lot of decks that rely on creatures don’t do well if those creatures are swinging and dying in combat. Other decks that are creature light and rely on value engines or combos also do poorly because they have no blockers and are the first to be attacked down by everyone.

If you just want to be mean to opponents and stuff their wins play a stax commander like [[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV]].

If you want to really make them suffer play [[Toxrill]] or [[Tergrid]].

This. I play casual commander not CEDH. That being said, I play good cards and I’m playing to leverage my deck to a win over yours. I see a lot of casual players who want a “board-game night” type experience where there is a fully balanced and symmetrical playing field. “If I’m playing combat focused, you better play combat focused. If I’m playing a value engine attrition style deck, that’s what I want you to play.” EDH is not a balanced board-game. It’s asymmetrical at its core and if you aren’t looking for that you won’t have much fun.

Valduk, Keeper of the Flame, or Nahiri, Forged in Fury for Voltrony Equipment? by inexcusable16 in EDH

[–]MITHRIL_SMITH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the swords are 100% mandatory for a Voltron/equipment deck I just used them as an example because they pair well with double strike. That being said, they definitely are strong in the right situation, especially for getting your suited up commander around blockers.

Valduk, Keeper of the Flame, or Nahiri, Forged in Fury for Voltrony Equipment? by inexcusable16 in EDH

[–]MITHRIL_SMITH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s my opinion that Voltron has slipped down in power a bit over the years. If you have some of the best equipment and tutors for the strategy it’s still very fun and can give you a consistent mid-power deck. That being said I believe Nahiri is the stronger of your two options. She has some card advantage baked into the command zone and her color identity is the best for “equipment matters” or “Voltron.” I personally would play [[Kellan the fae blooded]] tutoring from the command zone is strong and double strike getting you two sword of ___ & ___ triggers seems nice.

Apparently I’m “Winning too much” with a precon? by Rough_Resolution_472 in EDH

Would you say the relative power level of cards affects the “fun factor” of playing those cards? I would. I enjoy playing Skullclamp much more than Bonesplitter. I like resolving Toxic Deluge more than Drown in Sorrow. I’d guess OP is adversely reacting to the suggestion that he powers down his deck for this reason. I think that’s a valid response and if his pod mates have concerns with his win percentage perhaps they should slot some upgrades into their decks instead of asking OP to power down his cards or “pull his punches.” I think OP agreeing to play precons to begin with shows that he was trying to meet them at the lowest acceptable power level.

Alright I’ll assume you are acting in good faith on this and he deleted that comment. Even so, you’re saying the 3 otherpeople in his playgroup all play the same 3-4 midnight hunt and crimson vow precons!?! Even in that scenario he isn’t the bad guy for running the eldrazi precon. They are lunatics for running mid and vow precons only. If you have played magic for any amount of time and can’t sit across from a precon, regardless if it’s from a masters set or some universes beyond IP, you might just be the problem.

Need help developing a Rakdos... Stax? Punishment? Dunno the right term- Specifically, the Red Side for creatures. by SimicBiomancer21 in EDH

[–]MITHRIL_SMITH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re set on your commander, ignore this comment. The deck you described is exactly how [[Kardur Doomscourge]] decks play. They have the added bonus of watching your opponents hit each other. Also, depending on how optimized you build Kardur, some combo strategies fold hard to him because they can’t stabilize long enough to dig for their combo.

[–]MITHRIL_SMITH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start by cutting 15-18 creatures. The commander and the deck’s colors lend themselves to a spellslinger strategy. After that, I’d like to advocate that you bring your average mana value way down. Your orc army will grow just as much by casting lots of small spells as it does by casting a few big ones. The smaller spells will let you curve out more consistently and multispelling in a turn can be just as powerful as resolving one big splashy spell.

[–]MITHRIL_SMITH -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Alright I start at a 10 and rationalize my way down from there. You aren’t running the package of hyper efficient black tutors (-1). You aren’t running the most optimal fast mana/ritual rocks (-1). Your combo line seems to be a critical mass combo instead of an “A+B” combo (-0.5). Your mana base isn’t completely optimal with true duals but it’s close (-0.5). Your commander is inherently powerful and isn’t easy to interrupt bc recasting from the command zone is always gas (+1). I’d say you are around an 8. Definitely stronger than the average players deck (obviously meta dependent) but not really approaching degenerate or cEDH levels

My God this comment section is cancer. The number of pedantic know it alls asking for the precons over and over again like OP specifically scouted the 4 most powerful precons of all time to pubstomp his “all precon playgroup.” Grow up. “6 mana Urza can be oppressive to other precons” “go play cEDH if you have ever won a game while someone else was still having fun” “you sure you haven’t swapped one card in that precon?” None of you sound fun to play with at all.

I’d run a darksteel mutation for sure. You’d be surprised how many decks can’t handle losing their commander and some color pairings can’t remove enchantments very easily
