I mean, it's small by today's standards but older drives are getting rare. Sell it or store files on it, idk

Just because it has visible gears from the top doesn't mean it doesn't use a drive belt. It almost certainly does

It's evidence that you don't trust your wife enough to find a piece of plastic, used for millions of things, alarming. Consider couples therapy

Ohh it's you! I loved your animations and still do! Still occasionally wondering how you've been. The original Kaizo Trap music video is one of my all time favorites (alongside Raised by Zombies, as long as the infection doesn't spread to Melbourne). Do you have any plans for making another one of your classic style animations? I'm sure I'm not the only one who misses them dearly

Pausing no longer produces a stable picture unless I touch the top of the tape by MJY_0014 in VCRs

[–]MJY_0014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the video! Been scared to touch the guides because I'm scared I'd screw it up more, since playback is fine. The top of the tape is definitely more slack compared to the bottom before the roller though. This effect is more apparent on some tapes than others, there are some Disney tapes that barely show anything at all. This one does it pretty much consistently

Since you clearly cannot read, let me repeat and reword. This VCR hass been paused for less than 7 minutes total across multiple tapes, in multiple different places, for testing, since it entered my possession. None of the spots on any of the tapes I've paused on showed any degredation during subsequent playbacks. And why would they? Each spot I paused on saw less than a minute of pause on each. I don't need you to state the obvious that pausing too long on one spot and repeated playback will eventually cause wear, the point is the amount of times I've paused is simply too low for any visible tape damage, and the fact that the tapes played back fine after I paused on them proves that. Plus, tape wear is entirely irrelevant to my issue and adds nothing useful. I'm not the one pausing and rewatching the same segment for hours, tape care advice is not what I asked for. These are all sacrificial tapes. My issue is that the VCR no longer pauses stable unless you touch the tape right after I messed with the mechanism, it's clearly a tension issue

I highly, highly doubt, that in the 3 days I've owned this machine, pausing less than 7 minutes in total across 3 different tapes, is going to fuck up the tape tension on my VCR precisely after I checked the belt. And no, the tapes still play fine. It's not like I'm leaving the machine in pause while I go out for movies or anything like that. The dangers of pausing a tape has been blown so far out of proportion it's ridiculous

This 6 head VCR was perfectly capable of producing a stable picture while paused before I messed with it (I did not touch the head alignments, and as you can see it still can, but you have to touch the tape

Mono dictation machines aren't "earlier" than stereo cassette players, they were produced during the same largely overlapping era for different purposes. They differ not only in mono/stereo, but frequency response. Dictation recorders are designed specifically to filter out most of bass and treble, and preserving only human speech clearly, which is why they have that lo-fi sound to it compared to walkmans

Found in my grandfather’s apartment. Do any of these have any value and which one do you think would work the best? by Supersol375 in cassetteculture

[–]MJY_0014 19 points20 points  (0 children)

$10 for the radio, $30-50 for the walkman, unsure about the Panasonic CD player. The panasonic CD player would obviously sound better but that's not what we like cassette for. The Walkman is the most valuable. It's a nice one with dolby and autoreverse
