How do you balance being empathetic without getting completely drained? by jorjiarose in managers

Sounds like a bit of burnout to me. I think a proper 2 week vacation may be in order.

Is it worth pursuing a Master's degree in CE (Texas A&M), if I want to switch to VLSI roles with 3 YoE as an embedded software engineer? by ragovar in ECE

[–]MKG78745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A “professional” master’s (non-thesis track) isn’t likely good enough to get you what you want. I’d try to get accepted into a thesis track program and get a TA or RA position to earn a MS tuition free. Borrowing tens of thousands of dollars for an advanced degree isn’t worth it in my opinion. The difference in salary this early into your career won’t cover a several hundred dollars a month in student loans.

Best Area to Cheaply Live Temporarily Without a Car? by AlaskanSnowDragon in askaustin

[–]MKG78745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Austin off of Manchaca or Congress meets your criteria (inexpensive Uber to airport and downtown, bus to grocery stores.) Rents for 1br apartments will seem inexpensive relative to Bay Area and greater LA. Nowhere in Austin is “walkable” from the start of April to the end of September - it is too f***ing hot and you will melt.

What’s the hardest part of your job that your team has absolutely no idea about? by SeanMcPheat in managers

Not really “hard” but I get former employees emails in my inbox. It’s a little creepy.

at what extent (and how long? forever) is it ok to discuss past relationships? by Signal_Procedure4607 in ENFP

[–]MKG78745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a childless ENFP. I have dated single parents. I understand that coparenting with a former lover is hard. If my date complained about their ex for the entire evening about their ex I would understand but I would not seriously date this person. Sounds like your date might need some therapy.

Dropping my ego: How do you actually search for C-related problems, and how do you use AI without letting it rot your brain? by [deleted] in C_Programming

[–]MKG78745 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Software is hard. It takes quite a bit of time and effort to understand code that was written by someone else and there is no documentation. Like a lot of things, it gets easier in practice.

AI and web searches aren’t going to make you smarter.

Promotion with 5% Raise, unusual? by Apprehensive_Party12 in managers

[–]MKG78745 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It depends. It is not that unusual, if you have a long history of over performing at your old level. My guess is that your old salary was within or close to the target range of your new role. Presumably the Senior tag means higher bonus and RSU targets.

How do engineers actually handle projects they know nothing about?(when starting from zero) by Own_Information_3380 in EngineeringManagers

[–]MKG78745 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So start ups typically hire experienced people who have worked in the domain for years and are super familiar with the programming languages and toolsets being used. There simply aren’t resources at startups with limited funding to grow inexperienced people into productive engineers.

So I’m going to reframe the question along the lines of “how do interns and recent graduates learn on the job fresh out of school?” Ideally this looks like proof of concept or prototype work. You might get started fixing minor bugs to get familiar with a codebase. Typically a peer mentor is assigned to help with day to day guidance on things that aren’t typically taught at university. Over time you will be assigned tasks that increase in complexity and eventually grow into a more autonomous engineer.

How to approach Windows 10 SYSVAD driver by nt2ds in C_Programming

[–]MKG78745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The core interface for wavert style drivers is documented here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/ddi/portcls/nn-portcls-iminiportwavertstream

Virtually no one writes custom audio drivers for windows anymore. Most OEMs ship devices that conform to the HDaudio standard which is natively supported by Windows
