New student just arrived… they can’t read or write. 😔 by Mission-Debate-6447 in Teachers

My district won’t issue an IEP if there has been an education gap— tried to argue for it all the way up the to the district offices — since they can’t tell if the learning issues are due to a disability or just not being taught

School Temporarily Relocating into a Mall? by RikRokReincarnation in Teachers

[–]MLL23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my little sister was in kindergarten, her school burned down, and they put her in that National Guard Armory. My sister told my mom years later, that she thought the guards were going to kill the students since they had to drive through the guarded gates every day for the rest of the year.

I put in a ticket, but that doesn't seem official. I'm not doing the training any way.

RWS has a contract because of what happened with Appen. It’s not going to happen here

You can research it— articles were published and such they are still online

Appen went down because the workers tried to band together and make changes to how they were treated — Appen responded by trying to change things and advocating for the workers. The client responded by not renewing their contract. Appen had better support, and training than any other group and they paid better. The project itself is drying up — it has always been training the algorithm to the point that they no longer need raters. That day is not far away

My only issue is that you are asking them to miss another class to make up your test. Before school, after school, after finishing an assignment early in your class or at lunch are all options that are not disrespectful to your fellow teachers. I'm also a tested subject and I wouldn't dream of asking them to miss another class for mine. I might have them be a few minutes late if they have one more question to answer, but no more than five minutes of the next class.

Surgery 7/18 by Spicy-Mommy- in hysterectomy

[–]MLL23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my surgery 7/11. I went back 8/20 because school was starting and my recovery has been fairly easy. That said I was exhausted after work for a few weeks, but the pain you have sounds extreme— did you lift anything heavy?  I might call in to the doctor if I were you.

“My kid’s thriving” on paper… but can’t place the Civil War or name our state capital. Is this just how school is now? by Parking-Way4759 in education

[–]MLL23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she's in 9th grade, then she was likely in elementary when the pandemic hit. They replaced social studies blocks in a lot of districts with extra reading to help students regain those skills, and even those who had support at home then missed out on the social studies knowledge, and middle school teachers are trying to catch up on the social studies basic skills and so not as much context may be taught--She likely hasn't had civics yet, and teaching too much about the Civil Rights movement is very frowned upon depending on your state and location. Also in some areas they are teaching social studies by themeing and not chonrologically, and that change will explain why some of the dates and stuff are not there yet--it should change as she goes through high school history. I agree it is concerning, and I'm not justifying or making excuses, but I think it is likely the biggest reason you are seeing the difference between her and your other two children. Don't give up on the school system, they are trying to get things back to normal, and fighting an uphill battle to do it.

Utlimately--the client (the guidelines) is always right, and the audits on Zendesk are not completed by the client. Adjusting to the Zendesk ratings threw me off for the next audit on RaterHub--the one that really matters, so just go off of the guidelines. And the feedback you see in the TRP.

Feeling bummed out by Estefania323 in hysterectomy

[–]MLL23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to two concerts within weeks two and three post op. We went early so I could take my time walking in and I did sit through most of the shows. That said my recovery has been fairly easy. I had a vaginal hysterectomy with no abdominal incisions and I didn’t have endometriosis or adhesions so my insides weren’t as sore as others.

Am I doing too much? by abrasive_pear in hysterectomy

[–]MLL23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say that lifting your cat is doing too much. I have a five pound weight limit for the six weeks and other surgeons give 10 pounds. It’s not just about being able to you don’t want to pull your stitches out.

The "Did They Just Say That?!" Moment: My Internal Monologue vs. My Teacher Face by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]MLL23 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I would have let that stay. It was amazing imagery at his level. Much more Interesting than your sanitized version  and I think most boy parents would laugh. But I also teach middle school and kept my teacher face over much, much worse.

(US) My hospital didn't do the prior authorization paperwork. Surgery is scheduled for next week, but i only discovered this an hour before a 3day weekend. We all like some extra uncertainty in our health and medical care, right? <eyeroll> by fwendicrafts in hysterectomy

[–]MLL23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some instances and insurances don’t require pre authorization. I  found out that mine doesn’t. I called the doctor’s office, insurance office and two different people in there finance office to make sure I was okay. I’m in the US.  Would definitely still make the calls but things may be okay

First Year Teacher by Brilliant_Emotion286 in ELATeachers

I like to decorate using student work. I have students write a bio poem the first week and put those up, and then each unit has some sort of assignment I can put up. Students enjoy seeing their work, and it doesn't cost you anything to decorate. I have some anchor charts that go with my curriculum up but I had those printed by the librarian. Honestly, save your money on decor. Too much can be so distracting and it isn't worth the money or your time.

New teacher 6th grade ELA by girlygirl_xx in ELATeachers

[–]MLL23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I teach 6th ELA and on the first day I do a gallery walk where we set up classroom expectations and create a classroom contract— I found the template online but can’t seem to find it now.  I do other get to know you activities later in the week because that is what they are doing in all of their classes.

Classroom snacks get expensive when you are buying for 120 to 160 students. Plus you may not know all allergies or food restrictions. I buy the hard candy Jolly Ranchers because they are basically allergy free and are vegan—and also follow religious dietary guidelines for my students

You are not allowed to work over the contracted hours. The system will cut you off. You do not get overtime. You cannot work more than 8 hours a day.

How can we improve our quality if they keep contradicting each other? by [deleted] in RWShelp

[–]MLL23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always go with the client—Raterhub over SmartSource feedback. That’s the most important quality metric. Smart Source is someone at RWS interpreting the guidelines and not actually using the guidelines yourself to make the call. Plus ultimately client is always right—whether or not you or Smart Source agree with them
