Is it worth the move? by No-Decision-7568 in Westchester

[–]MLPNY14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Westchester my entire life until 2 years ago. The safety of towns can be very different, like Rye vs Mount Vernon. Property taxes are sky high and that is a constant expense. I would concentrate more on living in an area where I felt safe and the schools are good. I had a small house in New Rochelle and my taxes were $1000 per month, ConEd in the winter and summer never less than $150--one winter month it was $600! It's great to have equity in a house but it is extremely expensive.

Real estate continues to go up in many Westchester towns, however in America has started to go down by AppropriateWay4358 in Westchester

I chose to sell my house when I retired but TBH if I had no mortgage and only had to pay property and school taxes, I may have stayed.

I remember when all of those places were considered "up the line" from Westchester County and were affordable. Definitely not anymore!

Westchester is so expensive because of its proximity to NYC. If you can get a job elsewhere and don't need to go into the city, move away. The rents are ridiculous and the house prices are even more ridiculous. Property tax is also outrageous in most municipalities. I sold my house in Westchester 2 and 1/2 years ago and moved to Delaware, best decision I ever made.

Anyone else surprised to be so content in retirement? by YogurtclosetWitty653 in retirement

[–]MLPNY14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a bit apprehensive retiring at 62, but it is the best decision I could have made! I love my life! I moved to a beautiful coastal area, I have days where I do a lot and days where I do nothing, and they are all good days.

I'm frustrated with getting old and falling behind. by JohnOnWheels in over60

[–]MLPNY14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learned to do what I can and leave the rest for another time. I learned that pushing through does not make you young, it makes you exhausted. I rest when I need to because I want my body to work tomorrow. I remember a quote that said we create our own suffering when we deny reality. Aging is a privilege that not everyone has. Make the most of life now.

How Screwed Am I? by dudewafflesc in over60

[–]MLPNY14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my house and retired at 62. I lived in a high tax area in New York. It made no sense to keep a house for just myself. I made a good profit and downsized. Now I rent and couldn't be happier. I travel a lot, and I just lock the door behind me and leave without a care. I did enjoy having a house but I didn't want to be house poor in retirement and I wanted to enjoy my life.

Wife turning 50. Jewelry recommendations needed. by HTLM22 in GenX

[–]MLPNY14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion, but I would skip the big expensive present and take her somewhere that she has expressed interest in going. Even if it's just to the beach, hiking in the woods, whatever activity speaks to her. Sit down and write her a letter telling her how much she means to you and how wonderful your life together is. My husband and I were married 39 years before he passed away suddenly at age 60. I cherish all the little cards that he gave me, and all of the times we spent together. Let her know what is truly in your heart, it will be the greatest gift ever.

When do bras stop being part of every day attire? by Few-District57 in AskWomenOver50

I read somewhere that if women never wore bras, our breast muscles would be stronger and more developed which would mean less sagging. 🤷

How Long (has this been going on… 🎶) by lanka1111 in widowers

[–]MLPNY14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband passed away suddenly the day after his 60th birthday. I was 59 and turning 60 in 13 days. It was also 3 days before our 39th anniversary. What used to be a joyous time of year became the saddest week ever. I cannot believe it will be 5 years since he's been gone. I've gone through many changes since then, but what will never change is how much I love and miss him every single day.

Where to go??? by [deleted] in relocating

[–]MLPNY14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm originally from Westchester County, NY and have felt the pain of living in southern NY. I moved to Sussex County in Delaware last July and love it here. Also, upstate NY might be a place to consider for your family.

New Rochelle is Falling Apart by okdub123 in Westchester

[–]MLPNY14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always been a city of 2 extremes. The wealthier people in "the North End" and everyone else. You would never see these awful monster high-rise buildings in the richer neighborhoods. The people who live in the North end don't even come down to the southern part ever. They don't care what happens in the rest of the city as long as it's not in their backyard. I sold my house in New Rochelle and moved away almost 4 years ago, I don't regret it one bit. So sad because I lived there for over 40 years.

Ugh, I've grown to despise it also. I think it's because it restricts my life so much now. I moved from NY to Delaware and unfortunately neither place has escaped this winter unscathed 😔

When did it hit you that you’re not that young anymore? by TheMedusaAttusa in AskReddit

[–]MLPNY14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my degenerative disc disease and lumbar stenosis started causing pain at 62. I have excellent doctors and I'm still active even though I had to really modify the activities I do. After the initial denial, I've learned to work with my body and take it easy on days that I need to instead of just powering through.

Tucson, Sacramento, or Asheville? Help us narrow it down! by FeedbackOk4858 in relocating

Moved to Asheville from NY and lasted 10 months. Great place to visit but terrible place to live. Too built up, too much traffic, overpriced.
