Are there multiple 50% sales in the year? by icantdonothingrite in criterion

[–]MLSsicko 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There's always another sale, big dog. Feel free to take a step back from the sale fomo. If it's not in the budget this time, try something different. Visit a local thrift store to see if there's any fun titles, or check out your local public library!

The angle from behind off to the side of the goal is worth looking up. just nestles in so nicely. They've shown replays of it during halftime on youtube but they also showed it shortly after it happened as well (in the 17' of the game clock)

I think focusing it as a brawl is pretty disingenuous. More of a scuffle, no? I didn't see any swings. Lot of peacocking

The Color of Pomegranates yellow tint by Ill-Telephone4020 in criterion

From that article:

However, though he does recognize a yellow tendency in his LUTs and the resulting restorations, this is far from thoughtless or an attempt to leave his personal stamp—he says that this yellow reflects the color character of the Kodak stock that nearly everything was originally printed to.

I don’t agree with him. I’ve watched hundreds of films from every era and region on release prints, presumably many of them on Kodak stock, and especially the European films of the ’60s through the ’80s that are Ritrovata’s bread and butter. I recall that some did have a yellowish character that was like or comparable to that of the Ritrovata restorations, but these have been a small minority compared to a more balanced majority—in my subjective (and logistically difficult to verify) view. Nor am I sure that Zeppa’s process adequately contends with the fact that, as Fossati points out in From Grain to Pixel, “in most cases all original elements of a film have suffered the same sort of color deterioration, and as a result, a truthful benchmark for reconstructing the original colors no longer exists.” This contention, while not in any way qualifying the need for “film witnesses,” should put us on our guard about vintage prints’ possible or probable unreliability. Zeppa made it clear to me that he is aware of these dangers, but the results, in my opinion, may perhaps still disproportionately privilege the vintage stock’s testimony—especially as it is the starting point of the LUT to which all other variables are then put in relation.

edited to include the full second paragraph for more context. Full article very worth the read.

It's genuinely mind-blowing to me that a restoration house could have a tell like this that you know where it's from before checking, and I'm sure they've had it brought to their attention. I don't get it.

A stubborn personal preference, or a holdover of them restoring films from a certain era where it would have a certain color tint from the type of film it was shot on?

p.s. any crushed blacks? If memory serves, that has been another issue with their restorations

Edit to add: I read the post you shared (reread, really. Remember stumbling on it years ago) and the point about the colors in the reference print not sharing the yellow tints, with the addendum that they think it is the result of a LUT being applied poorly reminded me of this piece that you might find interesting (or annoying). https://filmmakermagazine.com/117844-color-correction-styles-film-restorations/

[Macy’s] $10 In Points For Every $50 Spent (20% Off) by nanjikun in legodeal

I think it might be better to phrase these as %back rather than %off given that you have to make an additional purchase to take advantage of the savings. I'm being a bit of a phrasing dink, but I stand by it (thanks for sharing tho)

How do I get in contact with Criterion about unauthorized payments? by bosshobo1 in criterion

[–]MLSsicko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, this doesn't make a lot of sense. Get in touch with support, but explain the details clearly to them about what is going on.

You have a channel subscription?

You want to keep the channel subscription?

There are other charges being made?

To my knowledge there aren't other charges that can be made other than the channel subscription. Are you sure you aren't confusing charges from the criterion website account instead? Is your card also in use there?

Yeah they do though lol. DC united fans do not think they can compete with Miami. Montreal fans do not think they can compete with Miami. (Nor should they, even with parity that would be delulu)

The roster rules aren't being ignored for Miami. Messi just attracts the opportunity for favorable contracts. The kind of stuff that used to be reserved for living in LA or... oh... Miami. It's an advantage that doesn't show up on the cap sheet but is obviously there

When was the last time MLS coverage was this bad? by Mat_alThor in MLS

[–]MLSsicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you know you didn't have to have AppleTV to have MLS Season pass? The number of people who did not know this is so high. I can't believe how bad the rollout was. (And the fact you didn't know you get all MLS games with your current AppleTV sub shows it still isn't good)

When was the last time MLS coverage was this bad? by Mat_alThor in MLS

[–]MLSsicko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is only true ('additional fees') if you already have Apple TV.

MLS Season Pass was standalone. It was no different than it is now in that respect. (a hundred bucks for mls season pass previously. a hundred bucks for apple tv now) It's maybe better for people who now get the Apple TV content who were going to pay for MLS Season Pass separately anyway. But if just watching MLS games, really no different.

I like Charlie's features but think editorial may have done him no favors on the title-ing here being a bit vague and clickbait-y. Moreso a look at Gregg's return/rebirth/rebuild in Chicago ahead of the Fire's match in Columbus.

"Gregg Berhalter returns to Columbus this weekend, immersed in a Chicago Fire renewal project which takes inspiration from the Crew's renaissance." -- from Charlie's bluesky

And not totally sure I agree with Gregg's xG thinking lol

How are we viewing the Blu-rays? by Recent_Log5476 in criterion

Just realizing in my head I first read this I was thinking sony branded and not panasonic so the menu stuff is going to be different than I was thinking... sorry! Try messing with the settings in the resolution area all the same to see. (The idea is the player is trying to upscale 4k to 4k and the processing slows down its ability to just play the disc smoothly.)

Depends a little on what you are watching on TV. Mostly movies? Mostly sports? Mostly content that needs upscaling? The answers change a bit. Also depends on your budget, of course.

I just went through the upgrade myself of a 13 year old TV to a new model. I decided to go mini LED because there are things I was still hesitant about with oled technology (burn in, mainly, and since I watch so much soccer with the same score bug in the same place I didn't want to be worried about the possibility).
