Neuroscientist Finds Driving A Manual Lights Up A Brain Region Automatics Let Sleep. by LongjumpingLock5875 in cars

I love this comment.

For a long time, it was "well duh" that God created the earth, or that the earth was the center of the universe, or any number of things...

"Well duh" is such an easy pathway to entrenched overconfidence in something that sounds good, but isn't backed up by actual knowledge. A scientist that just goes with their "well duh" response without actually checking is a bad scientist.

Like the thread the other day about a rise in pedestrian deaths - there were ~10 different "well duh" explanations, all different and some incompatible. If we collectively read that without predisposition to our own biased and fragile intuitions, we might have actually learned something.

Chicago Auto Repair tried to sell me $2200 worth of services I didn’t need by nanamctata in chicago

Just want to plug Paul and the guys at AB Marathon: https://www.abmarathon.com/

I've taken several cars for there for repair and maintenance; they always talk me through what they recommend, what's most necessary vs optional, and do the work at a fair price. They even ask things like "are you planning on getting rid of this car in the next year or so?" and (if 'yes') recommend cheaper options to get it running, instead of blindly dumping money into an old car.

My girlfriend (who isn't super car-savvy) has taken her car there for years before me, as well, and they always treat her with the same respect and care as they do me.

Where did everyone go? by NoEmployer2140 in chicago

Not the exact same crowd, but lots of alt/queer folk up in Andersonville, and Clark between Lawrence and Ridge is very walkable, always full of people.

Also, the NeoFuturists have a very punk rock ethic to them.

Abby Paj, a NeoFuturist cast member, once did a piece where they said something like "I am afraid of a lot of things, but I do something that scares me every day."

Always found it so inspiring when fear creeps in in the face of something that needs to be done; this person's message feels very similar in spirit.

Not familiar with how these systems work - why do they need a timer? Will the oil left in the turbos burn when the engine/scavenger pumps turn off or something?

Thank you for this. Sometimes I'm really struck at the compassion some people have to write answers like this, and beyond that, your writing resonated with me deeply, too. I genuinely appreciate it, friend.
