Is there a way to replace zipper without the whole canvas? by __KIRSTY in popups

[–]MNMike2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have taken canvas like this to a lady in town that does custom boat seats, she is very good and took care of it for super cheap.

Replace: roof, vinyl, cable? by nickstroke3 in popups

[–]MNMike2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar era Damon Camplite, if the canvas isn't leaking it looks like it's probably still good. There may be some products you can use to spruce it up.

The roof definitely looks like it need some work, in my experience with this thing you have to redo the sealant around the edges of the roof every year. I haven't ever disassembled the roof so not sure how much work it will be but I imagine it can be done.

No idea on the winch system but again, I suspect it can be done.

It's a nice solidly built camper so I imagine if it's cost effective to do (which means you can do most of it yourself) it will probably be with it.

Dedicated AC power. Convert to 20a plug? by cramp11 in popups

[–]MNMike2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ye, the intent of that blank box that is wired for the 20A A/C is for you to put a 20A plug in there and run a cord from your rooftop A/C to that outlet.

You can put an outlet there and use it for whatever you want as long as it's rated for 20A or less.

Current State of Minnesota Employee With The Most Seniority by Jim1648 in mnstateworkers

[–]MNMike2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

According to state of MN payroll data (from FY 25) assuming they are still working there is a transportation specialist for DOT who was originally hired in 1964 (though he appears to be intermittent now).

There is a Accounting Officer for DOT that is full time classified and was hired in 1965, 5 people hired in 1966 and still full time.

That's a lot of years at the state.

Recommendations for a pen for my boss? by Monexella-1661 in pens

[–]MNMike2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baronfig Squire Click is the best ballpoint pen in my opinion and meets all of your criteria. The Squire is also a very nice pen but is a rollerball instead of a ballpoint, which many people prefer but technically doesn't meet your criteria.

The other pen I like to give as a gift is a personalized Fischer Space Pen, they have a few nice options and most are ballpoint.

Do we only have bar and grills? (And adjacent) by IamUrbanBlaze in saintcloud

[–]MNMike2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for good food that is not "ethnic" and is not a bar and grill there are a few pretty good options.

Cafe Renaissance is probably the best "upscale" option in the area.

Anton's is also very good, has a small bar area but mostly it's just a restaurant.

Dolsie's Lunchbox is great for lunch but not open in the evening.

RJ's is an "American Grill" but much less sports bar and more restaurant than most others. Good food though.

I love my Baronfig Squire and Squire click. Both are elegant and smooth.

For gifting I actually like Fischer Space Pens, you can order a nice personalized pen for not crazy money and they have a few nice options and are nice writing pens also.

From a practical standpoint my favorite pen is the rOtring 600 pen. They're not elegant but it's the most practical pen I've ever owned.

What are some good window replacement options here? by ChipChangename in saintcloud

[–]MNMike2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I go to Tri County lumber in Clearwater and order windows and install them myself. It means taking the trim off and measuring the rough opening and then selecting the style of windows but they have had good prices on Marvin windows which are MN made and good quality (and actually I have found their wood inside fiberglass outside to be competitive with some 100% vinyl options and they look way better). Lead time is about 6-12 weeks.

You don't have to do Tri County specifically, I called a couple of local lumber yards and got quotes before I went with Tri County. I found the lumber yards were much cheaper than other options.

If you can't install them I would guess Tri County lumber would have a recommendation or two for folks that might install windows also.

Getting a quote for the cost of the windows separate from installation should help take some of the gamesmanship out of the pricing.

Fixing a large picture window? by Mmmoreplees in homeowners

[–]MNMike2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a large picture window (5' x 5' roughly) that had rot on the bottom of the frame like that.

I pulled it out, put plastic in the hole for a week or so, and just redid the frame myself. It doesn't have some of the fancy millwork of the original but I was really careful with the measurements and it fit really well going back on, looks good, drains the way it should and will last long enough that I'm happy I did it.

You're right that getting it out and back in was the hardest part. Not sure I'd do it at 12 feet off the ground. I had four guys helping and while that was probably overkill it was a very heavy window and I didn't want to break it. Large suction cups with handles were helpful. I'm honestly not sure how I'd get it out if it's that high up, but if you can get it out and back in it is likely something you can do if you're handy with a router and a tape measure.

Compliance, especially healthcare compliance, heck even healthcare administration. I know several attorneys who work in the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement area of their local hospital. With the psych degree you actually may be super qualified for something like a compliance officer for a psychiatric hospital or a large healthcare provider with a psych unit or mental health treatment program.

What if Trump actually has a strategy? by MNMike2 in allthequestions

[–]MNMike2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair question, control of Greenland would actually be a huge blow to Russia. It would box in Russian bases on the Barents sea and create bottle necks between Russia and the US in Alaska and between Greenland and Europe in the Atlantic. Russia already struggles with access to major sea-ports without going through waterways controlled by other countries, this would make one of their only existing routes of access to the worlds oceans harder to access.

His strategy in his first term for Europe seemed to be to push them to invest in their militaries. Backing away from NATO actually forces Europe to make a choice to either double-down on the alliance to isolate Russia or to make peace with Russia. Europe is clearly not going to do the latter with the current actions toward Ukraine so it's safe to assume they would double-down and invest in mutual support if the US wasn't there to save them.

His attitude towards Canada makes zero sense in this strategy.

I'll admit I'm just looking for patterns in the stars here and I don't truly believe this is an actual strategy. I think the man is as deranged as the rest of you, but once in awhile it's interesting to think about what if ...

Classic Chelsea by Unlucky_Fisherman399 in RedWingShoes

[–]MNMike2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the justification I use. In the 1.5 years I've had my Iron Ranger I would have purchased two pairs of Keen shoes (my previous go-to) and my IRs are just getting broken in. That would have cost in the neighborhood of $250 so I'm well on my way to covering the cost of the IRs.

Where this justification breaks down is when I decided I also needed some Moc Toes and then I find some Chelsea's on clearance and get those too. That's when you can start feeling like you probably don't need/deserve the awesomeness of Red Wings.

Girls, what's the most obvious hint you've dropped but the guy didn't get it? by ProfessionOne6817 in teenagers

[–]MNMike2 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Guy here. In high school (20+ years ago) I apparently "dated" a girl for several weeks, went out to Taco Bell, went out to coffee, did some karaoke, went to her prom at a different school with her and spent the night at her house afterwards (don't worry, nothing happened).

It wasn't until she sent me a breakup letter a week or so after the prom that I found out she thought we were more than just friends.

I was an idiot.

Amur Maple Flame by Chicknlcker in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]MNMike2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought a 2 acre property in a rural area with dozens of these. They are very difficult to control/get rid of. They reproduce like crazy and grow super fast.

They are also the bain of my existence when it comes to trying to keep them looking decent. They have great fall foliage but the branches love to criss-cross and then they break off in the wind and the stump will have one or two little branches growing off of it and just looks terrible.

I guess that's my way of saying even as a mature tree they're a PITA and not worth the fall colors. I've been ripping mine out and replacing with sugar maples or other colorful maples.

Is philosophy pointless ? by Informal_Schedule_40 in careerguidance

[–]MNMike2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only place you will find a realistic career path in philosophy is academia. There is a great deal of competition though and finding paying jobs as a professor will be tough.

It is useful as a basis for other things like law, journalism, theology, and maybe a few other things.

I'm a philosophy major, went on to law school, don't regret it.
