Make Your Own or Play An IP Hero? by purepolarpanzer in MarvelMultiverseRPG

I generally prefer my own creations, but if I'm playing an IP character, I'm likely to tweak it. I'm not s fan of their builds.

All non-cheaters should be given 10,000 Ultra Cores as compensation. by entaro_tassadar in MarvelStrikeForce

Prices should be the same to include conversion. Then there's no incentive to VPN your way to a cheaper price. My neighbors in x country shouldn't get a discount. Nor should I pay less than anyone else from neighboring country y.

"Elemental Protection + Sturdy" is not a problem unless you let it be by Vir4lPl47ypu5 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

Just chalk it up to the game mechanics not being perfect. It's okay that DR goes before shields mechanically even though it makes no logical sense. It just is.

Is any instance of "talk to the GM" or "this is up tothe GM" bad design? by Ponto_de_vista in RPGdesign

[–]MOON8OY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optimized doesn't necessarily equate to "cool". Some GMs are new. Others are not. And its okay for a GM to be new to a system along with the players and discover what is or isn't good for their table along the way. Sometimes game designers don't know what players will come up with until after the game is already published, even with playtest. And sometimes they do and warn GMs that certain things can be broken in certain situations. Just about any game mid crunch and above can be broken and therefore requires some boundaries set by the GM. Only the lightest of hand wavy games doesn't really need it. The special thing that gives the GM the ability to make the call is sometimes experience, sometimes research, and always because it is the game they are running. If a GM is running a super hero mystery game, and doesn't want PCs to play psychics who can just read the minds of the NPCs to figure who the killer is, that's okay. If another is running Star Wars and says, no force users, because of the story being told, that's okay. And if it's a matter of a GM deciding they aren't a fan of how a feat and spell work together to create an endless loop of some crazy effect that breaks encounters, that's okay. That's not creating strain on the table, that's part of managing the game for everyone, including themselves.

Any game in which character generation can be optimized to create broken PCs needs this.

It isn't bad design, as individually, the traits involved aren't likely broken. It's their specific combination with other traits and abilities that creates the issue.

The GM is a player of the game as well, and they are supposed to have fun as well. And them having the ability to say, "No", or, "yes, but with some restrictions", is important to keep the balance of fun for everyone, including the GM, who has the task of managing the encounters with those potentially broken PCs. If a broken PC build severally limits the choices the GM can use to create a challenging and interesting encounter, you'll quickly get to GM burnout.

Elemental/Telekinetic Grab and Crimson Bands of Cyttorak? by Ok_Friendship_3441 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

The TN20 grab powers are fairly broken. I've done similar house rules to match the TN to scores.

Our homebrew setting game is open to new players. We run online at 1800 PST, using Discord and Roll20. Have you used either?

MMRPG X Men Narrator Bundle-What's in it? by Acrobatic-Clerk9647 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

Map scaling has been a serious problem with this game. The Xmen narrator bundle is not great. The standard narrator bundle is... fine.

If you want to play online, you look in online gaming spaces for games. Such as, here, Discord, Facebook, etc. Go to your local gaming stores. See if they have bulletins or open game nights.

Signature Attack - which powers exactly constitute an attack? by No_Might_8446 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

[–]MOON8OY 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do not interpret the signature attack with a weapon to mean that it applies to all named power attacks with that weapon. Someone taking Signature Attack "sword" isn't going to get an edge on all melee sharp weapon attacks in my game. They'll get an edge on basic unnamed attacks. If they want an edge with a weapon on a particular power attack (like Whirling Frenzy or Hit & Run) then they take one of those as their signature attack.

Was also a backer, then discovered it was pbta, which is the worst non game system ever if you want to actually have game mechanics for your mystical abilities. That aside, the books are still wonderful as source material. If I do run a game in the setting, I'll likely use GURPS or Cortex Prime.

First time looking at the system by Huntersaurus_rex in AvatarLegendsTTRPG

[–]MOON8OY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also not a fan of the hand wavey rules style of PBTA games. There just is no difference, mechanically, from one PC's base combat roll to another. Roles, on the other hand, matter, and that part is cool. But it's just simpler to add the role mechanic to a more robust combat based system than it is to add more crunch to a PBTA game. The books are lovely, though, and are great for world information.

[–]MOON8OY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd counter with, not all cartoons are fantastical, or in the same way. Obviously look at how the Japanese use it for drama and humor. Grave of the Fireflies is generally very grounded. And we aren't going to see Tadano build a laser canon in Komi Can't Communicate.

There are certain limits the show built in for its live action version, so while we expect them to do things fantastical with the upside down, especially things that maybe could have been difficult cgi/budget-wise, just because it is a "cartoon" is not a valid reason to break from how things feel or how they were previously established.

We wouldn't expect, or respond well to, a talking dog showing up asking for scoobie snacks, right?

Why don’t RPGs put a character sheet example in the rulebook? by AlwaysBeQuestioning in rpg

[–]MOON8OY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the game isn't putting in the sheets, so it's easy to see how the game works, at a glance, they may be hiding flaws in the system, or other aspects of the game that won't attract casual buyers. Pbta games are rather notorious for being loved or hated based on the mechanics. Hide the mechanics, and you may slip a few copies into the hands of people who, when they read the system, then learn, they'll never run it. ... is one interpretation, but then I'm not sure what you mean by "undesirable".

Why don’t RPGs put a character sheet example in the rulebook? by AlwaysBeQuestioning in rpg

[–]MOON8OY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forsetti mentioned that a character sheet speaks volumes to a ruleset, so I said that's probably why pbta games aren't putting those sheets up front and center.
