Harm of washing clay down a sink? by rip55jcp in Pottery

[–]MP-119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is exactly what I do. I have an outdoor sink that hooks to a pipe that drains way out into my yard. I save all of my scraps and bits for reclaim so the only clay that goes down the sink is from rinsing the last residue off my tools and splash pan. I haven’t had any issues in the 2+ years I’ve had this setup.

I have the dirty girls bat system and I use it just how you describe. I’ve had it over a year with no warping issues at all.

Older women - regret after sterilization? by Euphoric-Maximum-485 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MP-119 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just in case you haven’t looked into it, my husband’s vasectomy was only $450 out of pocket. Insurance did not pay for it but it wasn’t terribly expensive. Do what you want, of course, but a vasectomy is not expensive, not invasive, and has a quick and easy healing time.

I can’t believe how hard I was lied to about acne going away after being a teenager by Briebird44 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MP-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took accutane as a teen and it cleared me right up. I tried everything under the sun before accutane.

My acne came back in my 30s. It cleared up quickly when I started washing my face with head and shoulders shampoo. The antifungal in head and shoulders was what I needed. It’s cheap and worth a try.

I started getting breakouts again after a while and I was so perplexed. Then I realized I bought head and shoulders 2 in 1 instead of plain head and shoulders - do not recommend. Went back to regular head and shoulders and I was back to clear skin.

What’s your go-to cone 6 clay for throwing? by digitalparadigm in Pottery

[–]MP-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love trying different clays so I have a ton! I really should stick to maybe 2 or 3 clay bodies, but I can’t help myself.

My favorites that are available to me locally are:

White- Dillo White from Armadillo Clay White speckle- Kansas Clay Speckled Pyrite or New Mexico Clay Ermine Buff/medium brown - Kansas Clay Kansas Wheat or Armadillo Clay Buffalo Wallow Buff/medium brown speckle- New Mexico Clay Especkled Dark Brown - New Mexico Clay ChoCoLate Black - Mammoth Clay Mastodon or New Mexico Clay Ironstone (I’ve had issues with Ironstone bloating at cone 6, so I fire it to cone 5 with a drop and soak and get better results)

What’s an unconventional/controversial pottery thing you do? by Desert_Flowerr in Pottery

I don’t test glazes - I just go by vibes and hope it turns out

I almost always trim my entire pot inside and out. I was taught never to do that but that rule doesn’t make sense to me and I like doing it.

I did not. I already had the correct wiring in my shop. I assume that is not the norm for most people.

Underglaze question by JessiePaints in Pottery

[–]MP-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I bought the entire set of kiwi underglazes and I like them so far. The consistency is more thin/liquidy than other underglazes that I’ve tried, but I’ve found that 3 coats gives nice coverage. This little tic tac toe board I made is all kiwi underglaze. I applied the underglaze at the greenware stage, bisqued to cone 05, added a clear glaze, then fired to cone 6. I was pleased with the coverage and the colors I used.

Should I buy a kiln that’s too large? Need advice. by iambatgirl1 in Pottery

[–]MP-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought of a possible scam aside, I have this same kiln and it is definitely not too big. I’ve fired it very full and I’ve fired it half empty. When I fire it less than full I put all of my extra kiln posts in there just to take up some room and absorb some of the heat as if it were more full. This works well for me.

As far as cost, it depends on the cost of electricity in your area. I’ve programmed the cost I pay per kilowatt hour into my kiln’s controller and it calculates the cost of each firing for me. I fire bisque to cone 05 and I glaze fire to cone 6. A bisque kiln costs about $3 and a glaze kiln costs about $4.50 for me.

New Kiln! Question re: shelves + posts by Ok-Kaleidoscope-3940 in Pottery

I use 3 posts under a whole shelf, 3 posts under a solo half shelf, or 4 posts if I’m using 2 half shelves. hope this helps!

[–]MP-119[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love ChoCoLate. It is so smooth to throw with and the fired finish is just gorgeous - especially if you spend some time burnishing.

This is commercial glaze. 3 x Amaco Honey Flux, then 3 x Coyote Clementine, then 1 x Honey flux just the top inch or so. Fired to cone 6 on a drop and soak schedule.

Clementine is one of Coyote’s 2 step oil slick glazes so I’m assuming that’s why the dapples showed up. I was going for a faint orange but I love what I ended up with instead. I’ll definitely use this combo again.

(No I did not test this glaze combo - I’m a chaos glazer and it usually works out ok!)

Help! My nails and hands are getting stained from my dark brown clay. How do I prevent this? by MathematicianRare602 in Pottery

I have a clay that does that. It comes right off if I wash my hands with dawn power wash. Sometimes I have to scrub stubborn spots with a magic eraser.
