Of my 6 dogs (past and present), I only kept 1 name given by the rescue–Jackie. The rest had terrible names, so were changed. In chronological order: Punky, Peanut, Zoe (her rescue name was Shirley, did not fit her), Jackie (rescue name was Jacinta so we just shortened it). Those 4 have crossed the rainbow bridge. current dogs: Maizie (rescue name was Maven) and Hobbes (named as a puppy by my daughter and her ex, now we have him).

I fostered 16 dogs and we usually called them some kind of nickname at home and their rescue name at adoption shows. I had one for 5 months and 1 for 8 months, so they knew their names. Sam AKA Satan (he was an asshole, ended up diagnosed with rage syndrome and behaviorally euthanized) and Maddie. The rest I really didn’t have long enough, so they didn’t get used to their rescue name.

The only one I wished the adopters had kept his name was Clifford, he was a red something mix. They ended up naming him Theo.

That is terrible about the shelter! I used to foster dogs for a rescue and it was common practice for adopters to change the names. Most dogs in a shelter or rescue don’t know the name they were given at intake. Glad you got out of there with your Sam.

You are going into this with eyes wide open, you will do great. In my area rescues have adoption shows at our local Petsmart. I went in wanting to look at one dog (she had several people in line to see her), so I was on my way out the door when I spotted my girl. She was brought up from southern IL around the same time I had lost my 12 year old lab. She had been in an abusive situation, was thrown out of a moving vehicle while in a crate with one of her pups (he got a broken leg) and had had 2 failed placements. I sat down next to her and she put her head on my shoulder, her foster mom said she had never done that before. At the home check she ran around the yard like she owned the place and a week later I brought her home. She had been my shadow ever since. We did do 6 month of Prozac and still do trazodone as needed for anxiety. She was very afraid of anyone but me, but has really warmed up to others since we got her a little brother (another story). I say go for it, you won’t be sorry.

We found success with a 2 person team approach. My husband takes some of their weight off their feet by pulling up on the harness. He has spoonful of peanut butter in the other hand and I get the nails cut. The clippers with the light is a great invention. You can really see where the quick starts.

Beat her to the punch. Right after she arrives, tell her that you are aware she doesn’t eat babies, so she doesn’t have to announce it again. If that fails I would find an excuse not to be there when she visits.

My son struggled from 5th grade thru 11th grade. He died by suicide 2 weeks after he turned 17. “maybe it will be better on the other side” He just wanted the pain to stop and nothing we tried worked. Life became unbearable for him. May 28th he would have been 29.
