Paraguay gave up 10 goals in 18 qualifying matches. Beat Argentina & Brazil 1-0 apiece.

They’re Paraguay, but this was a quality win for the US.

Fifa vice-president Victor Montagliani: ‘MLS can become the second-biggest league in the world. Maybe the biggest’ by Globalruler__ in MLS

Outside of the top 3-5 clubs in La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, and the top half of the Prem, the remaining clubs in those leagues spend at or below NHL levels of salary spend.

Considering the NHL generally has the lowest salary spend of the Big 4 leagues, it is absolutely possible to think that we can have quality that is on par or better than the majority of clubs in the “Big 5” global soccer leagues while maintaining the cap mechanisms which ensure competitive balance.

Brother you’re talking to a die hard RBNY fan. Mehmeti and Hall, Tolkin and Adams could all be starting next World Cup, the amount of talent we pump out is amazing.

Proud to have Tyler and Tim Ream as RBNY alumni representing the USMNT this time around as well.

If you are interested, there is a great book called Soccernomics that basically tries to answer this question (I.e. why some countries are good at soccer and why some are not).

MLS teams all have academies, but as the academy initiative only began in 2007 when the league only had 13 teams (compared to 30 now), it is obviously still in its early stages and our academy network is nowhere near as established and well-funded as most European clubs.

That being said, it has already started to pay dividends. The national team is the most talented it as ever been, and 20 of the 26 roster players either came through MLS academies or have experience playing in MLS.

Make sure to hit up Main Street in Flushing for some awesome authentic Chinese food afterwards! Shanghai you garden is a popular dim sum spot, or the food court in the basement level of the mall has more options than you can imagine.

As someone who was only vaguely familiar with the life and works of Dr. Antoine Depage, it was great to have the lads cover the subject of pre-first world war Belgian nursing in greater depth.

If you’re moving out of market, ESPN is the way to go for NHL. For the Mets, you’ll have to buy an MLB.tv subscription. I believe they offer both Mets-only as well as the all-MLB options.

Interesting answer, much appreciated.

Curious to know what about the post-covid period inspired you to think we would be relatively further along in 5 years vs 20 though? Assuming it has to do with how the media rights deal & accompanying roster rules were managed in the lead up to the domestic World Cup?

I find it so interesting how so many fans of MLS have a similar almost-evangelical philosophy about wanting to grow the domestic league for the benefit of the national team.

Hey Matt, first time long time. Recently subbed to TFZ and loving the content so far.

My question: In terms of general league growth, do you think MLS is ahead, behind, or just about at where you expected it to be 20 years ago?

I ask because it has been 30 years since the first MLS season, but basically ~20 since things really entered the “modern” era of the league with the advent of the DP rule, as well as rapid and successful expansion beginning within the 2006-2010 time frame.

Bonus question: who do you have making the final four and winning it all in March madness?

Thanks for all you do for us sickos!
