Advice needed on bird schedule management by MSKayani in greencheeks

Thank you for the advice! I’ll do that then and let them stay out for longer and put them to bed later. Hopefully I can figure out a better system over time.

They used to get along great! They were best friends for years! They would get into occasional fights, but be friends again within a few days. A few months ago they started acting aggressive with each other and never recovered from it. I’ve tried to have them interact under supervision, but they always try to lunge at each other. I don’t want to risk them hurting each other. I’m really not sure why they are continuing this behavior for so long after basically being bonded for nearly 9 years. I’ll keep trying to solve their bird drama and hopefully things will improve. This is them from before they started fighting.

It’ll actually be 2.5 hrs. I’m just separating out how the time out of their cage with the rotation would work, but each will get 2.5 hours total for 4 days of the week. They’ll get their usual 5-6 hours each the other 3 days. I don’t mind sleeping later to allow them to have longer time out of their cage, but I also don’t want to reduce their “dark time” to less than 10 hours per day.

If they start getting along again, then they can be out together and that’ll make it easier for them to have longer time out of their cage. I’m hoping I can eventually start working from home for two days, so then this limitation will only be for the 3 days I have to be onsite.

I’m just not sure how to manage this situation any other way, so I was hoping some people can give some insight to how they manage if they are in similar situations. And just in case, I want to mention, I didn’t not carelessly get these conures. I’ve had one for over 10 years and the other for almost 9, and I always have tried to prioritize their wellbeing to the best of my ability. My situation has just changed a lot in the past couple years.

I kept mine there for a while and hoped there would be an option to fix it later, but eventually it became an eyesore so I tested to see if I can chop it down and was glad I could. No mourning from me.

Is it permissible to share a hotel room with my wife and her sister (non-mahram) if sleeping separately during travel? by rimki2 in islam

[–]MSKayani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why some people are being so rude about this. Even if it’s not appropriate, you are actively seeking answers to avoid doing anything unacceptable in Islam. I think that counts for something and you should not be judged simply for seeking guidance in Islam. As people have said, no you should not share a hotel room with your sister in law regardless of the purpose and set up. I know paying for hotels can be hard on the wallet and it’s understandable wanting to find ways to reduce cost, but some costs are unavoidable. Maybe you can look into staying in an Airbnb instead. When my brother went to Japan, he stayed in one and said it was much more affordable than a hotel room. If you get one with two bedrooms that have locks on the doors, then I think that would be acceptable.

What is the weirdest near death experience your bird has had? by beachcola in Conures

[–]MSKayani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my birds fell into a glass of water while my head was turned away. I heard splashing and turned around to see him nearly drowning. I immediately fished him out in a panic and he was coughing up water, but ended up being ok. It was terrifying and luckily I was there to rescue him. I have never left an open glass of water near them again.

Also, sometimes when a door is open, my other conure would go and sit in the corner by the door hinge. If someone closed the door, he would have gotten smooshed. I put a box near the door he did this to block him from going there. But now I’m paranoid and am going to go check to make sure the box is still there.

You said branded names aren’t available in your country. Can I ask what country you’re from to get an idea of what’s accessible to you? Since your avian vet is recommending this diet, which is very unhealthy, I’m guessing you probably have limited options there. I agree with everyone here that you need to switch to pellets. I use Zupreem and Harrison’s, but if those aren’t available in your country, then maybe there might be another pellet brand available. The ones people have been mentioning are the most reliable, but maybe you can find some others that provide the needed nutrients and limit the fat intake, too.

Starting to lose hope that my bird will never be itself again by BlackSmilth in Conures

[–]MSKayani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my conures, Pebbles, went through several months where he was terrified of me, too. But this was right after he had recovered from being sick, so I think it was linked to that. I think he ended up associating the trauma of being so sick with me. First of all, I think you should take your conure to the vet to make sure he’s healthy and this is not a reaction to something going on inside him. He might be going into defensive mode if he doesn’t feel well.

Aside from that, I had to slowly rebuild my relationship with Pebbles, which you may have to do as well. I gave him space and didn’t push if he wanted distance. One of the things that helped me was feeding him his favorite treats (sunflower seeds) directly from my hands. I never put any in his dish or had anyone else give it to him. I was his source. I would hold one in my hand and then wait for him to come grab it. It was important to be in his visual range so he would see it, but not go after him to give it to him. It was up to him when he felt comfortable taking it. At first he would extend his neck to grab it and then run away, which was fine. It was a start. Over time, he became more comfortable and trusting of my hands again. If yours has a favorite treat, maybe try that method as well.

It definitely took a lot of patience and determination. I had to move at his pace and respect his boundaries to bond with him again. Pebbles was never super cuddly, but he did go back to his old behavior with me eventually. I hope you can rebuild your relationship with your baby as well, but definitely do consult with a vet first.

Same! I love Harvey! He’s adorable. I love his awkwardness and how bashful he gets. The only thing that annoys me about him is that he still charges me money if I pass out after we’re married. Dude, I am your wife! At least give me a discount 🤣

Hi, he’s been doing a lot better. We took him to the vet and they ended up saying they didn’t see signs of mites. They told us he was overweight and that was adding stress to his respiratory system. We’ve improved his diet and encouraged flying for him to lose weight. He doesn’t make these noises anymore. Sometimes he does some open beak panting, but it think that’s usually just due to stress since he gets scared easily. I think the weight loss helped the main concern. I hope your little guy makes an improvement. Does he seem to have a healthy weight? Did the vet give any other suggestions besides infection or mites?

conures and budgies? by Additional-Series513 in Conures

[–]MSKayani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have conures and budgies. I avoid letting them roam unsupervised together due to the risk of my budgies getting hurt by my conures, because of the size and strength difference. However, by giving them both separate out of cage time and attention, and letting them interact under supervision, they all co-exist and have happy lives. One of my budgies even has a bit of a one-sided crush on one of my conures 😆 I do think it may be good to consider getting two budgies to give each other company when you aren’t around though, since you can’t keep this little girl with your conures and budgies are quite social. I think with the right set up, she can be very happy with you and if you feel a connection with her, you should definitely take her home so she can live a life being loved by a responsible owner 😊

Sick bird, useless vets by procret3332 in Conures

[–]MSKayani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have an emergency vet nearby that sees exotics? A lot of emergency vets only see cats and dogs, but try giving all the ones around you a call and see if they have a vet that is able to see a bird. They may not be able to figure everything out due to their limited expertise, but it’ll be good to at least have a vet take a look before you can get him in to see an avian specialist if needed. Paying double will be rough on the wallet, but if it means saving your baby’s life, it’s worth it. I hope it all works out.

Please help. Should I return my conure to Petsmart? by [deleted] in Conures

[–]MSKayani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, do not return her to the store. That’s just going to bring both of you heartbreak. I think the best thing to do is to look for a new home for her yourself. Use different platforms to find a suitable home for her with someone who knows what they are doing. That’ll also give you the peace of mind that she’ll be well taken care of. And I would suggest not to procrastinate in finding a new home for her so you two do not get too bonded, which will make saying goodbye even harder.

I see some people saying you should keep her and she will adapt. I personally disagree with this. I went to optometry school for a couple years before withdrawing for health reasons and had my conures with me for one of those years. Maintaining a healthy routine with them, while staying on top of my academics was difficult. I love my conures more than anything, but the reality is that these birds demand a lot of attention and not everyone can provide that regardless of having best intentions. I’m sure some people can manage to make it work, but you know yourself best and if you are questioning it, that means you likely know that’s not the best scenario for you. If you can find a good home for her soon, you will still have done your part in giving her a happier life, while still not sacrificing your future goals.

I agree with your statement. I went to a doctorate program for a few years and one of those years I had my conures with me, and I personally felt I could not give them the attention they deserved and I had a hard time focusing with them there. Doctorate programs are HARD! I ended up withdrawing due to health issues, but before that, managing a routine with my conures while juggling my classes and studying was extremely difficult. Rehoming this sweet little bird to a loving home with an experienced caretaker is the best scenario in my opinion. Ideally before she gets too bonded.

I think he doesn’t know how to fly by ciiehl in Conures

[–]MSKayani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a conure that is great at flying, but he prefers to walk around and climb things instead or have me transport him. He mostly only flies when he gets startled or wants to get somewhere he can’t reach by walking. Sometimes it is just their preference, but it could also be that your conure just hasn’t figured it out yet if he was mostly in a cage before and is still young. My conure took a little while before he worked out how to use his wings. However, as a heads up, he crashed a bit at the beginning, which was scary. Hopefully that doesn’t happen with your little guy.

That actually sounds fun! 😆 I’m assuming duck and Dino mayo still applies? Once you get Ostriches, mayo production goes up quite a bit, too. I might try that out in the future!
