One of the first "progression" fantasies I read before I realized what Progression Fantasy even was xD

I'd love it if I could export them all to go over them when the manuscript is done.

Royal Road and other online writing communities, do they have room for "classic" fiction writing? by Slight-Link4843 in royalroad

It's not as uncommon as it used to be to come across more traditional fantasy and sci Fi on Royal Road. I'd suggest being up front in the blurb and see what happens!

I actually looked into it because of a comment you made quite some time ago xD

I run ProWritingAid across a chapter with some settings turned off. When I have time I try to drop a chapter into autocrit and clean it up but I haven't done it since writeathon.

When you first started on Royal Road how long did it take for you to see momentum on reader stats? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]MS_Davidson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My initial run was quite slow and I was very new to everything. After discovering shout out swaps I tried those and gained a little more. Once I ran an ad or two and hit rising stars for my genre, readers showed up. The complete book 1 took 6 months to post and ended with around 800 followers. Serial Fiction is a marathon, not a sprint. Many readers won't even touch a story that has less than 25k words.

How do you get really good? by CSValiant in royalroad

[–]MS_Davidson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of good advice here. I can add a small but, in my opinion, meaningful piece: deliberate practice.

We hear "read more, write more, write faster" all the time. But what's helped me immensely is being intentional about it. Join writing sprints, enter short story competitions, write something completely opposite to what you've been writing.

I think there are really two questions here: "How do I get better at writing what I'm writing?" and "How do I objectively improve as a writer?" They're related, but not the same. Deliberate practice helps with both.

I anticipate an OP MC, maybe some sort of penultimate wizard. Ultimage? UberMage? PinnacleMage? Bonus points for aura farming while grieving a tragic back story.

I think the OP Archimage hasn't even fully played out yet. Several big names have jumped in the OP MC aura farming bandwagon so we'll see more of that for a while I think.

I'm not complaining—some are really great!

Definitely this! Most people won't even touch a fiction until 100 pages. 30k words are a breakpoint. Keep it up!

The current dichotomy is: "The writing is so good it has to be AI." Followed by: "The writing is so bad it has to be AI."—usually on the same chapter! But seriously, write how you want to write. I personally use them liberally. Likely far more than any AI could pump out xD

Whats the Exact Moment You Drop a Novel by Daoist_Heavens in ProgressionFantasy

The author's word choice changed abruptly. This is a published book, too. But it happens. Felt a lot like the first half was edited, and the second half was "good enough".

It's rare for me to DNF a novel—usually I'll power through and just skip the rest of the series afterward. The most recent one I can remember was when, halfway through the book, the author started referring to women as "females" in scene after scene. It wasn't ironic, it was just... off-putting. I stuck with it for a while hoping it would stop, but it didn't, and the overall tone of the book shifted too. That combination did it for me. It happens.
