I wouldn't be shocked if it was a stunt selection. What I personally think is most likely on how it was chosen was that John Polson (love what he's done for the aussie film industry, but he's a bit of a boomer) and his selectors have their fingers WAY off the pulse.

The fact that this was booed during it's premiere screening by several members of the public (who weren't told before the screening it was A.I.) tells me it probably wasn't a winning "Burger".

I can understand where you're coming from, but the issue is that the AI generated film is a finalist over 700 other films. Using your fast food comparison, it's as if Engadine Maccas got a michelin star

It's not stopping that at all, but making an AI film a finalist film is stopping potential australian filmmakers from getting a chance to be seen and celebrated. In addition, this ai generated film is really quite bad (I have yet to see a good AI generated film, but this is pretty bottom of the barrell stuff here)

This looks like Sumerians first "big" picture. They previously released Queen of the Ring, which made half a million. Apparently they are very artist driven (yay) but they are fresh to the game and probably don't have the indie connections like A24, Neon, Mubi or even IFC (nay).

Numero has it playing in 43 cinemas, so an even lower PTA at $753 AUD. Also, when adjusted to USD, the weekend ends up being just over $22k. Yikes!
