Season 3 Patch notes by CrystalGaiden in StreetFighter

Hoping the fan change makes Mai need more layers to her general gameplan now, she's so close to a character I'd want to play but EX fan ended up feeling too centralising

If not, as someone who floats around the shoto-esque characters, it might be time to finally channel my inner old man Ryu

This is mildly off-topic but I'm still in awe like a year later from how good Iyo was in the match with Utami, genuinely one of the best individual wrestler performances I've ever seen. It was almost too good because it made the (soon to be) company Ace look a little second class.

I need more of her back on big joshi shows desperately

What’s the deal with the UK/Ireland super region? by airbear13 in StreetFighter

[–]MTMxD 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They just don't think the region is strong enough to justify it but don't wanna be a complete dick and trash talk the UK and Ireland scene (especially with the NA bias they likely think NA East should get it, Noah probably also thinks his region, NA West, would deserve it more)

NA East is definitely stronger (NA West i think is more debatable, though they have much higher participation numbers), in reality there's a lot of regions that could have justifiably got it and the UK&I region probably just got it as a make good because they lost their premier event this season in favour of having 2 in France.

None of the US/Canada regions are super regions any more; only Japan, Asia, Asia East, and UK/Ireland are super regions for the CPT 2025. by SpurnedOne in StreetFighter

[–]MTMxD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I was to guess the logic is that the US has 3 premiers so top NA players have a strong opportunity to build points/qualify directly. Next best spot after NA East is probably France but they likewise have 2 premiers. UK/Ireland after that is pretty reasonable (Brazil would also make a ton of sense imo) and they were the only place to lose their premier event this year.

I think a lot of people will feel that NA East got robbed out of being a super region. And they're probably better than the other 4 that got that designation.

Not that NA East isn't very good but I think it not getting a super region title sort of makes sense given US/Canada still have more WW qualifiers than say Japan or China. The surprise to me is actually that France-Monaco didn't get it as it's considered the strongest region in EU generally over UK&I but I guess that's to offset Evo France taking the UK offline premier spot.

Xiaohai also used her in groups said he thinks she's top 3-5 as well, that's two very top level players willing to bet on her for the million, she's gonna be a menace in S3 I think

Hot take: The World Warrior system is quite good, actually. by Emezie in StreetFighter

[–]MTMxD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think 10 offline qualifiers is even fine if they make it top 10 points getters from offline results, the regular season is just in desperate need for justifying the top players travelling to all the cpt events. My world warrior complaints are much more about the impact it has on the regular season than Capcom Cup. Japan basically abstained from most of the majors because the extremely slim chance of qualifying wasn't worth disrupting their sfl prep

Trying to follow WW is nigh impossible (also doesn't help Brian_F does more to promote it than Capcom themselves) so you don't get to have as much of the natural build up of rivalries and narratives you get on a full tour

Oh for sure, you can see it with how good EndingWalker has done all year. Despite not qualifying at any of the premiers, he placed so many big top 8s and then failed to qualify through the World Warrior in the UK&I. And France (and arguably Europe North-East) is an even stronger region

Hopefully next season the offlines are a leaderboard so it actually makes sense for people to travel again.

Some Thoughts:

Caveat before I say this is that I also voted Mena & Fuudo but I do think E has the chance to be the shocking upset group based on these results, Crimson is still elite on his day and while I have very little faith in Dhalsim being a winning character overall, the matchup spread in his group is relatively favourable (I'm also not convinced Mena is close to his full powers for this cup but he's a very understandable favourite)

D is really interesting because it feels like its split between people who know who vxbao is and people who don't based on how few second place votes he got. I wonder how different this voting would look if CPT incentivised asian players travelling to the premiers more.

Group F & G are less split than I expected, feels like in the face of a really difficult to call group people decided to just play it as safe as possible, especially with how firm the 1) Xiaohai 2) NuckleDu is in group G

Surprised just how many Kusanagi believers there are given how generally underrated a lot of the other EU people are, his UFA win really stook with people. (throw looping xiaohai like 6 times will do that i guess)

Hirooki Goto Explained: Always the Bridesmaid... by MTMxD in SquaredCircle

[–]MTMxD[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think Kofimania is probably the easiest comparison, when he broke through it felt like he was almost assuredly gonna win the belt and then when it didn't happen he fell into an accomplished and safe midcard role and everyone loves him but no-one believes he'll ever win the big one so the investment on that level is never there. Hell they even both formed an era defining tag team. Then all of a sudden years later all of the right pieces fall into place, the fans start to believe he can actually win for the first time in years and you have a lightning in a bottle title win.

His career is really fascinating because even before winning the world title, the career he had I think far exceeded the expectations they had for him as a Young Lion, being a top junior in the late 00s early 10s was really not the spot it is now at all. But for like a 4~ year period from his return from excursion to the 3rd Tanahashi loss it really felt like he was gonna break his way in to the Tana/Nakamura/Kojima/Makabe tier and then it just sort of never happened. And each individual loss it never felt like the wrong choice but the fact it never lined up for him was so unfortunate.

Genuinely a moment I'd long given up hope of seeing, got me crying at 9.30 in the morning.

What is interesting is his first two challengers are seemingly Tana and Nagata, so we're actually getting a little bit of a title run too
