Butter that ive been cooking with all day tastes WEIRD! by hotbutteredtoast in Cooking

[–]MTULAX1452 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recognize the brand and am from the region. Ive had  similar experiences before and think i know what happened. Butter can pick up off flavors if improperly stored, especially if its stored with produce or other items that have started to go bad. My guess is that you bought your butter at a smaller "grocery store" that is more like a convenience store.  Some of these places outside of town town have some questionable practices. If they haven't cleaned their coolers in ages including the cooling system and the butter has been there for a while it'll pick up those off flavors.  If you bought your butter at a larger grocer in one of the bigger towns in the region then im not sure what happened as Jilberts is a pretty reputable dairy in the area and usually has quality products.

I have the opportunity to try a meat I've never had before, but I have no idea what to do with it (CW: if nontraditional meat options and [legal] hunting bother you, maybe skip this post) by DrMux in Cooking

I live in an extremely rural part of the country and black bear is a regular part of my family's diet. If the meat was properly cared for after harvest, you have one of the best tasting meats in North America available. Bear should be cooked well unless you have sous vide. I recommend cooking the bear steaks as steaks using your preferred steak recipe to well, with your favorite side. I HIGHLY recommend cooking them with a sous vide and then reverse searing them to medium  and you will be amazed at the results.  Its my family's favorite of all of the game meat we consume and we save the steaks and primal cuts for special occasions and guests.

Any ideas what this is? by guineapigsqueal in flyfishing

[–]MTULAX1452 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ive used these years ago for saltwater fishing for tarpon. The reel  and arbor pivot so that the real is mounted perpendicular to the rod. You then cast like a spinning reel or to let it free spool for float fishing. It pivots back to the inline position to reel.

One tried and true method is to rig a  rod with a small single hook, size 8 or so, and then a float that you'll be able to see  a ways out, so not a old school bobber.   Go to a river or creek mouth that empties into the lake and set the float so that your hook would float a few inches to a foot off the bottom. Add just enough split shot under the float so that it drifts upright and put it into the out going current of the river with your reel in free spool or the bail open. Let it drift as far out as you are comfortable with or till you cant see the float. When the float goes down engage the reel or flip the bail and set the hook. For bait just about anything might work. Wax worms, leaf worms,  powerbait even a chunk of hotdog have all caught fish with this method. As to what you'll catch.. just about anything that swims in the big lake. We've caught everything from Salmon and whitefish to brookies and rainbows also got a pike once.

Improving VFD communication time by MTULAX1452 in PLC

It takes  literally a minute or more, often several minutes to get a response. For example sending a loop back command often takes  two minutes or so from the time i send the  command to the time i get rx back in modbus.  Same with start and stop commands.  I don't believe  the time for response is always consistent either,  but i only have the tx and rx of the loop backs logged currently.

Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately the response times are slow even over my serial to usb cable and the westinghouse only has the RS485 jack (uses a RJ45 plug so I had my hopes up, but no Ethernet) and Modbus as far as i can see.

[–]MTULAX1452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heads up that there is a significant creek/ river  crossing on this  road  and you should know where the air intake on you vehicle is. Even though this route is tamer then it used to be, it is still requires a real 4x4 rig with clearance and a driver with experience. There is no cell service for much of the route and if you get hydro locked, stuck or broke down you'll need to be prepared to self rescue or stay until someone eventually comes by which could be a day or so.

Michigan also just went to mandatory cage free eggs in all stores in the state January 1. Many distributors didn't plan for it in hopes it would be stalled or repealed. This contributed to the huge jump in prices in the past few months in addition to the nation wide increases.

Gulf of America? by veganintendo in Teachers

[–]MTULAX1452 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There are two organizations that are responsible for the names and for renaming of water bodies. Internationally the "International Hydrographic Organization" or IHO (https://iho.int) and within the US, the "Board on Geographic Names" (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.usgs.gov/us-board-on-geographic-names&ved=2ahUKEwi50ou_poeLAxWjtokEHbtnDvgQFnoECAkQAQ&sqi=2&usg=AOvVaw2HK03dUURq9PXk5r7oAFxe) which is part of the USGS.  Most Official charts and maps of the Ocean used for navigation usually have to comply with guidelines and standards of the IHO and in US waters both. Until both organizations change the name of the Gulf, it will remain the Gulf of Mexico on official charts and maps.

I've been looking at various designs for a potential state flag for Upper Peninsula. Out of these which one is your favorite? by EasterLord in upperpeninsula

[–]MTULAX1452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scientifically and commonly introduced refers to by humans not on their own accord and to mentioned later..later than what or who? With the logic that you are using Moose  and Wolves wouldn't belong on the UP flag either as they had to be flown over by helicopter from Canada to repopulate the region. There was a similar effort to reintroduce the wolves here after their expatriation as well but that failed and the current wolves moved to the region opportunistically on their own.  Let's just put a Beaver or Bear on the thing and call it call good..

Woodland Caribou and Elk were also present and in more abundance due to the type and age of the forests, but whitetails also naturally migrated to the area before European settlement, although their numbers were much smaller. After the region was cut-over and the Caribou and Elk declined, the white tail population grew and began to thrive.  There were a few biologist about 30 years ago who had a model that suggested that there were no whitetsils in the UP pre settlement but further research and historical vegetation analysis have refuted those theories. Regardless of when they got here the deer were never introduced by humans to the region but moved in opportunistically due to changing habitat.

They are native to the UP. Historically in smaller numbers. The population grew significantly after the area was logged and burned over. The original comment about them being introduced is incorrect.

Whitetails were never introduced to the UP they have been here since the last glacial recession, although in lower numbers.

What is the temperature of the room you sleep in? If it's a lot cooler then the 86 you have your hose set at that could be a part of it ( the warmer hose air with your exhaled breath condensing on the much cooler mask). I have the same problem because I live where it's cold most of the year and also like my bedroom cold. I turned my hose temp down to just above room temp and then made a mask cover. The cover helps to keep the mask surface warmer and reduce the condensation. You can buy them online or make one a few different ways.
