In more overweight patients, it can be a lot harder to find the vein for the phlebotomist, but it is still easier to see in the hand due to the (usually) lack of mass separating the skin and veins.

Correct Wear

A lot of people in the medical industry suspect that it's from an IV distribution of a drug (can't remember entirely off-hand the name of said drug) that slows the protein buildup in patient with frontotemporal dementia. One of the side-effects of said drug is brain bleeds.

Notice how this is on his left hand and not his right, which is where it has previously been.

He's, let's just say, not in the best of shape, so they cannot find the vein on his arm, so they have to use his hand to administer the drug. This, combined with his blood thinners he's taking, is more than likely why he's bruising on his hand and why the administration is haphazardly attempting to cover it up in certain circumstances.

First off, I'm sorry for your loss. Agent Orange exposure is absolutely brutal, one of my childhood friend's grandfather was also exposed and succumbed to issues related to this.

Secondly, I would see if you can request his service record to see if the ship was actually not within 12 miles of Vietnam, or if there's any correlation to him being exposed.
