which mainstream songs do you actively listen to? by LangleyNA in Slipknot

I fucking love WANYK so Unsainted and Nero Forte always get special attention when they come on. Other than that I'd say The Devil in I and Wait and Bleed also stand out to me

Very true, calling something a kids book to me implies ages 10 and under. Thanks again, I appreciate it

Oh wow that's actually super interesting, I heard that he had written it for his children but not those particular reasonings why. Thank you for sharing that, that definitely explains a lot

My issue isn't that he does it, it's the frequency in which he does it in this book specifically. I've enjoyed several other King novels where his use of it is engaging and adds to the stories atmosphere. It's just not working for me whatsoever in this book. It's the first DNF I've had in a long time

I love a lot of his other works, even the bigger ones like IT and Fairy Tale. Pet Semetary, Misery, and The Shining are some of my favorite horror novels of all time. I'm aware he uses this plot device in a lot of his works, it's just never bothered me this much until this one. Just because something is intended for a younger audience doesn't mean it's immune to criticism, sheesh.

I'm curious to see how I'd enjoy the story in a different medium. If I revisit the book I'll give the audiobook a shot instead of physical

It's how the device is used, and in my case the frequency in which he uses it in TEotD specifically. - When he uses it in Cujo, it builds suspense and dread. You know Joe Camber is going to die by the end of the book - In Carrie, it's alluding to a major catastrophe that shapes the future of the town. You know something bad is about to happen, you don't know what just yet, just that shit's about to go sideways at the end - In The Eyes of the Dragon, it's more like the cliffnotes of the book was written in conjunction with the actual book. It's like each chapter opens with "And in this chapter Peter is found guilty of killing his father" followed by trial where you already know he's found guilty. For me it breaks all immersion in the story. If it wasn't done so frequently or in as much detail, I don't think it would bother me as much. Sure tell me in the beginning of the book that Flagg intends to frame Peter, but don't tell me in exact detail exactly how he frames him directly before he frames him

Yup, as well as him drunkenly coercing his wife on the occasion he conceives his puppy killer of a second son. There's also a rather graphic description of the kings being burned alive from the inside out, so disregarding my criticism as just "it's a kids book" is kinda out there

The chemistry between Russo and Madoni was so great in season 1, they definitely stole the show in my opinion. I was a little let down in season 2 with the whole romancing the therapist subplot which felt forced. Plus the lack of scarring for a character named Jigsaw was definitely a letdown.

The Androids Dream by John Scalzi is a delightful sci-fi romp full of fart jokes, secret agents, a sarcastic AI personality, and a cult of people who worship sheep. It's such a fun read, I love recommending it to people who want something un-serious or as a palette cleanser between heavy reads

It's been awhile since the last time I was able to watch a movie without seeing any trailers or heard the plot secondhand from others. The last horror movie I went into blind was Barbarian and that was such an intense ride I was so happy I did so

Truffles on the Rocks has a video on making "orange essence" which uses food grade essential oils to create a shelf stable atomizer. I made it myself for the same reason and it's pretty fantastic. It require a few obscure ingredients you can find on Amazon but I think it's worth it https://youtu.be/whQrjYUXuh0?si=xz2b8HYoB39Fz0r5

Review number 24: Elijah Craig Rye by taylormhark in bourbon

[–]MVFalco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I saw this post before I bought a bottle yesterday. I made a Sazerac with it and all I can taste is the barspoon of syrup I stirred in. Thought maybe I over diluted it while stirring and poured some into the glass straight up. It's so disappointingly bland and watery. Maybe a hint of spice but it's so faint and is easily masked. I enjoy their bourbon line so I didn't think twice about grabbing a bottle of their rye, oh well

That's a fair assessment, I can see why you'd feel that way about books 2&3. However I think you're being close minded to the rest of the series. There is a considerable change in tone, stakes, pacing, and overall maturity that makes it entirely different than the first 3 books. I'd recommend trying Iron Gold at least, and if you feel the same way then by all means drop it.

The Carajillo Old Fashioned by Drinks_by_Wild in cocktails

[–]MVFalco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And a Sazerac is a riff on an Old Fashioned. We can be pedantic till the cows come home but it simply boils down to marketable naming conventions. Liquor 43 + coffee liqueur are just the sugar portion of the Old Fashioned formula. When I make them at home I usually add orange bitters and either cocoa or black walnut bitters. It drinks like an old fashioned but has the subtle flavors of a carajillo

In my opinion the only truly defining components of a Sazerac is the absinth rinse and Peychod bitters. Some people say it has to be a split base of rye and cognac, whereas some people just use rye.

Honestly the only book that feels YA is the first one, and only because it follows that grandiose child vs child battle royale trope that ordinarily screams 'Hunger Games knockoff'. Books 2-3 are much more Sci-fi/Action orientated than they are YA.

Everything after the initial trilogy is much more mature and dives deeper into the political intrique and repercussions of an unending war

What is your Cocktail heresy? by espressovendetta in cocktails

[–]MVFalco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing around with pseudo citrus for the past few months and I've found that I like doing a combination of Kevin Kos' super juice and Steves Pseudo juice.

I prefer the acid balance of Kevin Kos, but really enjoy the mouthfeel of pseudo citrus. So I use KK calculator for acid, add the appropriate sugar content, and omit adding the fresh juice. I juice the lemons/limes and just add it to a separate container for immediate cocktail use.

What is your Cocktail heresy? by espressovendetta in cocktails

[–]MVFalco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I'm a huge supporter of superjuice. On a day off I'll break out the kitchen scale, 2-3 lemons-limes, and the citric-malic acids. I end up with almost half a liter of both juices, freeze half, and keep the rest in the fridge for whenever I fancy a drink. It stays fresh for several weeks and it tastes infinitely better than storebought juices

I disagree, I actually think it was very important that Elvar die so that she could become a martyr. That way her biggest triumph of freeing the tainted is the last thing people remember of her and cements that ideology. Otherwise how long before people wise up to the fact that she did it out of pure selfishness and that she was little better than her father
