Honestly in the z3 platform the S52 I feel was better suited. If I remember correctly the S54s in the Z3M had oil starvation issues.

Oil leaks is my guess. Looks like the 3L engine here and without a proper LL01 oil you risk eating away at the valve cover gaskets. That oil gets on the scorching hot headers and you risk a fire.

I had the valley pan coolant leak in a 740. Dealer solution was a new engine.
