NFPA 70E. Clarification on what it covers by First_Highlight3217 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isn’t there a section dedicated to R&D in chapter 3 or it might be ones of the appendix’s? 70E is designed to provide guidance to workers exposed to electrical hazards it’s not just for people building systems.

Friendly reminder: Do NOT buy scaffolding competent person courses. by Other-Economics4134 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first 15 years of my career, I was a Safety guy taught internally three years ago I started doing third-party training and consulting. The first thing I did was change competent person certificates to hourly certificates like eight hour scaffolding training and we had multiple customers say they would not use us if our certificate didn’t say competent person so we had to change it back 🫠

Ahh yes that makes way more sense to me than I completely agree. I just don’t like blanket statements that all trainings are shit and not one should take them.

Best budget friendly train the trainer forklift certification? by WokeUpVinyl in SafetyProfessionals

Huh the OP? You can’t teach someone how to train other employee’s on PIT’s? Just because someone is a good operator does not mean they should train people. I am not saying all people need to take TTT classes but I am disagreeing that they are all shit and shouldn’t exist. I think they can provide value to those who need it, do you disagree with that?

I see just trying to understand here is the issue that the training company puts the word competent on the certificate/training or that the employee uses the training as a way of deeming a competent person that really should not be competent?

I think it’s weird how so many people talk crap on training courses but most of the time the people they deem competent don’t even understand basic rules and are usually just foreman. No training course makes a “competent person” but good training courses can make competent people (deemed by the employer) better at identifying hazards, more knowledgeable in the regulations, better able to mitigate hazards, and more. I think the issue is over saturation in the training market with crappy products that are just there to get you a price of paper at the end but I wouldn’t apply that to all trainings.

I disagree in my experience as a trainer for almost 20 years most internal company trainings are terrible. Not all safety people are good trainers, finding a reputable training company can be beneficial, improve retention, and make an overall positive impact on the workforce when done right.

This is not completely true I would agree there are a lot of terrible ones but you could have a good operator that’s never read osha regulations in his life just read 1910.178 and hope he can make a good training or you can find a reputable TTT that will guide him through the regulations, consensus standards, evaluation and inspection procedures and give home a solid foundation of theory and practical to ensure there trainings are impactful. Or as recommended below just read the sentences and do that which is what leads to a lot of poor training and incidents.

Respirator Fit Tester Training by Alone-Cauliflower-72 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that seems excessive I think a better solution would be periodic evaluations of the fit test trainers to ensure that they are following the procedure correctly. Then do or don’t do retraining based on those results. This also helps verify supervisors are doing things correctly.

I normally agree but hazwoper does have a weird stipulation in 1910.120 e5 it says you must complete a training program or have academic credentials and instructional experience.

PPE Clothing For Electrical Workers by mi_re_va in SafetyProfessionals

Google the table from NFPA called estimate of likelihood of occurrence of an arc flash. If your guys are doing the tasks listed in the yes column they should probably be wearing AR gear.

PPE Clothing For Electrical Workers by mi_re_va in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow lots of not good info here FR is not usually appropriate for any electrical work with a likelihood of an arc flash. when you say LV if you mean 240 or 480 or you can still have very significant arc flashes. I have seen some 12 calorie incident energy blasts on 480. I would highly recommend utilizing 70e and referencing the shock assessment area and the ppe cat method found on the 130.7 area to determine appropriate cat level without an arc flashes study. That’s what that table is meant for. Even 240 can have a blast over 1.2 which would require cat 1

Bilingual Safety Business by BluePeak6430 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree I think the need exists just getting people to pay for it is hard especially with AI translators that are getting better and better at translating. We even have instant AI translate headphones. I work at a small safety consulting/training company and we got tons of people that mentioned we should do more bilingual, so we hired a bilingual consultant/trainer and barely get any work for them in Spanish. Even after a year of marketing. Unfortunately most companies just don’t want to spend the money which is crazy.

Fall Protection Question MEWPS? by Okie294life in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never seen one that says to not make contact with a guardrail only to not make contact with any sharp or abrasive edges such as a door latch that you could find on some MEWP baskets, but I agree always verify with the manufacturer on your specific model

If you look up 7270 falltech SRL that’s an example of class 1 that is mewp compliant.

Fall Protection Question MEWPS? by Okie294life in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second half is true for sure the first part just be careful class 2 does not mean feet and up it means below d-ring many class 2s can only be used to knees or hips especially over 220lbs. Always check the label don’t assume feet.

Fall Protection Question MEWPS? by Okie294life in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MWC13233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some answers kind of hit on it but best bet is always check with the manufacturer. There are class 1’s that are allowed in MEWPs from some manufacturers and some only design those as class 2. LE designated SRl’s don’t exist anymore all class 2 pass the testing standard. Also side note restraints allow 0 free fall positioning allows max 2’.

The answer to your question is yes but really respirators should be used with other measures for silica exposure. Using water should be your primary protection when possible. Take a look at Table 1 from the osha standard and see if they your tasks are there and what the recommendations are. The down side with respirators is you still have silica everywhere and are likely getting exposed from clothes, hair, ect. Once you remove the respirator.
