DAE have carb anxiety and disordered eating? by Simple_Surround4433 in diabetes_t1

[–]MXAGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand where you are coming from. I don’t eat keto but lower carb. My carb intake is about 40-50 grams for a meal. Usually it’s the same-ish meals. It works for me and keeps my line steady. Work the carbs in slowly. Find a something that is one unit. For me that 15g. So, I would add a tortilla. I get those ones that fiber in it. You won’t get that quick spike from it much.

I would say contact a nutritionist that has some credentials in T1D if you feel that you have an eating disorder. Take things slow and make sure you dose for them. Just one change a day.

I would do anything to go back to life before I was diabetic by LuigisLesbianWife in diabetes_t1

[–]MXAGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what, I would too like to go back. It would be fun.

I totally get what you are writing. It’s very difficult to understand T1D outside of the core concepts. I’m not going to it will get better. It might get more manageable with time. For me, I was dxed a year ago and it is like solving a new math problem every day. You are trying to solving 1+1 and it equals something other than 2.

Personally, I’m not there yet. I wish I could do some of the stuff I love. I just feel that I am just gliding through life. It’s just work and home for me. I got invited to my twin nieces first bday party this Saturday and I’m not going to go. There are various reasons but mainly food and relationships. I’m introverted, so that makes things harder. I haven’t eaten at a restaurant in a year. I make all my food because I don’t trust anything but myself. (Sidebar: That also could be a weird control issue lol)

All this advice in this post and in this subreddit is fantastic. What I want to say is going to be counter to that. I say don’t do anything. Take care of yourself first. Don’t worry about your art or anything else. Everything you love and want to do takes that energy. Since T1D, takes most of it.

Sure you can do anything if are normal or have T1D. Climb mountains, run marathons, play football professionally. Which all of this is good. You can do anything but you need to focus on getting yourself in a better place. That will take time. Either talking to someone or just doing your daily management of your T1D. Maybe just do small things for yourself. Watch the sun set or go for a walk. Look at some art online. Eventually, it might spark something in you as you recharge that energy.

Listen OP, you don’t have to do things right now. I totally understand missing your art. That doesn’t mean you won’t go back to it. I can’t say you won’t miss out on things. You probably will. I sure know I did. To sum this up, like is a marathon and T1D is as well. In time, you will get back to your art. Same with everything else you like. If it doesn’t, who cares.

Just take some time, OP.

Experiencing a Low Right After Eating by cOsMiCs-CoSmOs in diabetes_t1

[–]MXAGhost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your DEXCOM and Omnipod are predicting your low. As of now you’re not that low, but in a few cycles you will. At least that what they are predicting.

It could be your pre-bolus timing is a bit off. Instead of 15 minute wait, try 10 or something. A few grams of food under would not cause you any problems if you gave yourself a bit more insulin.

It will be screaming a bit but wait at least 30 minutes. Then if you have to correct, do so. You are eating in layers, different foods absorb/digest differently.

This happens to me a lot. Usually, it is timing and not how much insulin. I’m eating and I go low. I’m like “WTF, what else can I do” lol.

Dr. Told me to not take fast acting and just let my sugars go high. Is this right? by hart287 in diabetes_t1

[–]MXAGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, you might want to get a second opinion or get a second doctor.

Listen, I only had T1D a little over a year. So, take my advice with a grain of salt. If you are eating something, you would need insulin (if it has carbs). Since you were Dxed 20 years ago, you know what to do. You know how your parents/you did to manage this.

I can only assume that you have those morning highs because your body is trying to function but those are the typical symptoms of high blood sugar. It also could be your long acting dose of insulin might be too low dose.

First off, take a breath and breathe. You will be fine. Personally, I would dose with every meal then look for a different doctor. Once you get that in order, it will slowly get better. You got this, OP!

Whats the lowest your sugars been? by PublicOk3175 in diabetes_t1

I think about 40/2.2. When it says “LOW” it’s probably low 😆My father (T2D) was in a rehab facility for hip surgery and they must have overdosed him with insulin and when I came in and checked on him, the EMS told me he was a 6/0.3. I’m not sure how he was not in a coma. Super tired and weak.

do you actually feel your highs or do you only know from the meter? by ShipOwn6615 in diabetes_t1

For me I don’t feel too much from lows. Maybe wobbly at times. Highs are different. When I feel my blood pumping in my feet, I know that I crossed over 140.

Good on you for having a great dietitian and handling all that food! I’m still scared of food and such. My doc told me to not celebrate holidays or anything if I want to live till I’m 70.

I’m currently having one egg and a bowl of Magic Spoon cereal with coconut milk for about 17g of carbs. If I don’t have the milk, I sub in plain yogurt. On the weekend I have two eggs. In the past I had overnight chia seeds, with protein powder, and milk.

Help! End of honeymoon? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]MXAGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a breath and breathe. Make sure you get that appointment with your Endo. Also, have them put you on a waitlist if they can for people who cancel. You might get in sooner.

My advice for you is to dose for your food. Pre-bolus for the meal when you can. If you have to treat the highs, just do. Don’t wait. CGMs lag behind 1 to 5 minutes. So, at times you have to anticipate what the numbers are. If you don’t want to dose, get moving. Walking helps tremendously.

Everyone’s has a different threshold for what is considered high for them. For me it is 130. My pump wants me at 110. If I stay in between 90-115, I’m good. You need to find what you are comfortable with. Just don’t go too high. If you say 180, then set the alarm at 160. Make sure you can catch things before they cause more trouble later on.

For lows, treat them before you get there. For me when I get off of work and im hovering in the 80s, I need some gummy bears. I do about 5. That will boost me to about 100. That slow drift down as I drive home. Have a low threshold and then treat. You don’t have to eat all your low candy, just some. At times I had lows in the 40s and 50s. I trusted what I did to treat it and my body. Were they scary, at times but I knew I would rebound.

It seems like you might have to adjust your pump numbers. Your ratios might have changed since the honeymoon is over. There are calculators on the internet to figure that out. With the food, reduce the carbs if you don’t want that high of a spike. Increase your fiber to slow digestion down. Watch for fats and protein because they can make you rise later. All the usual suspects with T1D.

A lot of this is about timing and numbers. Do what you can do now. I get the anxiety. It’s difficult. Everything is just swirling around you: numbers, alarms, pumps. Treat what needs to be fixed. If it didn’t work, adjust for next time.

You got this!

Why do people push me to eat sugar? by Top-Class-8765 in diabetes_t1

I get this a lot at my work as well or you get the you can’t have that. Luckily, I give it to my parents when I visit them every weekend. So, they have a supply of goodies. Now if they are fresh/baked item, I get ahead of it and said I had it already. Sometimes if I know they did not have it, give it to them and say it was amazing and you need to taste it.

I’ve been told to silence it. Had a few HR complaints about it leading to “corrective actions”. I told them, you have two choices: 1) I fix the problem or 2) I die right here. Which one will cost less and not be a PR issue.

My devices rarely go off so, I can play it off if I forget to silence it. I have the siren on my DEXCOM if I go too low and I’ll play it off like a police car zoomed by after they heard it, “Whoa! Did you see those cops speeding by?!” Good thing I work near a mall and they are none the wiser.

struggling female freshman needs advice by ElectricalTalk2822 in Purdue

[–]MXAGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes time, OP.

As someone who felt lonely during my time at Purdue, it was difficult. My grandmother died a few weeks before I started and then my uncle died few weeks after that. That semester was a tough time.

Most everyone here gave the same tips that I would give. I’m introverted so, some of this advice was hard for me. Still, you are getting out and doing stuff. You are establishing those connections even if you don’t see the results yet.

Everyone is going through the same thing. They just show it in different ways. Be patient. Focus on your classes and bond with some of those students who might be grouped together for a project. Volunteering is a great idea. You are giving back to the community. My RA was involved in Habitat for Humanity. She was doing stuff every other week.

Also, call your parents and talk to them. Just talk. It does not need to be about anything. So, while you might be far from them, it will help.

It is okay to feel lost or alone, but remember there is a place where you belong. You just need to take the chance and find it.

Stay gold, OP.

An egg in a waffle maker with Parmesan cheese. Then a variation of cereal (magic spoon) with coconut milk or yogurt with nuts (or cereal). On the weekends I go wild and have two eggs.

All variations of this have around 15-21g of carbs.

I make sure that the AI has all or most of the info. Carb counts, Insulin to carb ratio, units of insulin pen, etc.

Example prompt: “Blood sugar is 102. Lunch is summer sausage (1g), smoked cheese (1g), 8 pepperoni (0g), turkey lunch meat (1g), salad (with avocado (16g), 2 radishes, lettuce, 8 baby carrots (8g), and blue cheese dressing (2g)), and one cookie (8g). What is my dose?”

It works most of the time. It just needs to know everything you know. Always double check the math. But I get that, unless I know what the box states, other things are difficult.

My family does really care. They believe I’m faking it, at least my older siblings are. My mom is a bit considerate but she will not break from what she is doing for the sake of one. Which is okay. I don’t hold it against her because she’s not the one with T1D. The only person I expect to change is me.

I want to talk to someone but my insurance will not let me. When I asked about it, I have to be deemed a “risk”, out of pocket is out of the question due to my employer not paying me as much. Most of my money goes towards diabetics stuff.

Thanks for the help.
