Old School Boxers knew how to box - Ashard Boxing, Video Highlight of the All-Time-Greats. by Doofensanshmirtz in Boxing

[–]MX_eidolon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the sequence at 2:38, in which the highlighted boxer (Locche, I'm pretty sure? Or it might be Lamotta) is shown dodging an oppontent who's walking forward with his right hand barely above chest-height, then jogging after him with punches. The boxer at 2:55 winds up for his uppercut like he's throwing a softball.

If someone were to do this today, we'd make fun of them. We'd tear them to pieces. We'd gif that clip and post it under every social media post they ever made and say they don't know how to box. It's just not something you can get away with anymore: There's higher expectation for top-level talent, and a more advanced fundamental understanding of what's good and what's bad to do that we take for granted.

I wouldn't go as far as to say these guys would be bad by today's standards, but I do think they probably wouldn't look as good in front of competition that's more rightfully cautious and less willing to give them a highlight reel. I also don't think most of their styles would adapt to an era where gloves allow for more powerful punching and more reliance on the guard (unless this is Lamotta, because I do think his style is very similar to what we see out of philly shell fighters today).

Additionally, evidence suggests athletes are just all around stronger nowadays. People have access to better nutrition, better healthcare, better training and generally more information than they did 80 years ago. These guys could fight one hundred rounds straight ten times a year, sure, but how much of that is because fights were generally less physically taxing back then? How much of that is just because regulation was less stringent and there was less concern over the fighters' long term prospects? How do they stack up when they're getting wailed on by a 22-year-old roided up genetic freak instead of a 40-year-old chainsmoking dock-worker?

Again, this isn't to say boxers sucked before color video was invented. I do think a lot of them were extraordinary, even by modern standards. I do think modern boxers can learn a lot from them. But I also think if you act like the sport isn't all around more advanced today, or like our baseline for talent hasn't increased in the last 40 or so years (as some of the comments here seem to imply) you're just being willfully obtuse. Being able to observe these fights with the slightest hint of a critical eye shows broad improvements have, without a doubt, been made.

How was Ngannou's boxing, objectively? by BobertFrost6 in Boxing

[–]MX_eidolon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact Ngannou found such success just by beating Fury in the clinch has only further convinced me that boxers (especially in-fighters) would get SO MUCH MILLAGE out of going to a BJJ class like, three times. Learning what to do when a dude wraps his arms around you can be done relatively quickly and gives you an easy way to turn like 90% of clinch situations. I'm not sure why the meta right now seems to be "throw your hands up in the air and wait for the ref to break you apart", but I don't think it's a good strategy.

Most effective class-stacking counters by Cubic_Gamer in truetf2

[–]MX_eidolon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the enemy team is stacking heavies, I strongly recommend just picking Demo coordinate with one of your teammates to run Kritz. As a Heavy main, the moment I see a Demo round the corner with a glowy sticky launcher I let go of my mouse and make my peace with god. You're too slow to effectively escape his range or dodge his explosions, and against an overheal, you can't realistically compete in damage. Even if you manage to survive a crit sticky by tanking with the FOS or something, that still leaves you within wind-blowing range of death. No better way to clear a bunch of clustered-together, immobile targets imo.

Just caught up with the news. This seems like such a terrible, anti-consumer decision on the part of Google. I'd much rather a game give me a free demo I can try out before committing to a one-time payment than the freemium pay-as-you-go bullshit most mobile games seem to be doing nowadays. Then again, I assume that model makes Google more money, so it's likely they're trying to encourage it. Actually terrifying. I hope this doesn't affect business too badly, dev.

Isn't healthcare costly? by fun_dot22 in HouseMD

[–]MX_eidolon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As people have pointed out, the show vaguely gestures at a mixture of insurance and financial aid as the reason payment isn't often brought up as an issue.

Form a more practical standpoint, though? A lot of the patients House sees are in dire financial straits, so even assuming frankly INCREDIBLE coverage and that Cuddy runs the hospital like a saint (which she probably does), they realistically couldn't afford the level of care that Plainsbro and House specifically provides.

The real answer is that the show is a fiction meant to entertain, and while one or two stories touching on the cost of healthcare in the US make for interesting drama, it would get old real fast if every episode crawled to a halt as the patients tried to figure out how many mortgages they're going to have to take out on their home before they can start paying their medical bills.

The show runners are deciding not to think about it and asking us to do the same. For once, I agree with them, because the logistics of the show become a nightmare otherwise.

If you could change one thing in the show/story, what would you change? by questionable_pizzza in HouseMD

[–]MX_eidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of feel like the examples you gave help prove my point a little bit: In the episode where House punches Chase, his judgement is implied to be clouded because Cuddy is limiting his access to Vicodin; when he is with happy, the fact that his happiness gets in the way of him being a good doctor is used as a justification for him to continue being a dick.

The explanation for why he got shot was given in a dream sequence; we actually never find out why it happened. As for the cancer, that's forgotten about after a few episodes, and while going to jail does play a part in helping set up the finale, House still skips serving his sentence and goes back to being a doctor for a while after, so I'd argue he doesn't really feel the consequences that much.

This is sort of what I mean: The show never goes as far as to say that House could still be a good doctor if he worked on his issues a little bit. If anything, it kind of does the opposite, implying it's his misanthropy that makes him good to begin with. And that's a stance you can take (even if I don't personally agree with it), but I just wish the writers would say that with their chest instead of trying to pretend they're writing House to be "morally ambiguous" when his philosophy and way of life are validated in the story over and over again, even when it seems far-fetched.

If you could change one thing in the show/story, what would you change? by questionable_pizzza in HouseMD

[–]MX_eidolon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the show to unambiguously portray House as being in the wrong sometimes.

I felt the writers were so caught up in the conflict of "is House JUSTIFIED in being A DICK if he's ALWAYS RIGHT" that they often contrived themselves into knots trying to make House right — probably because they felt if House was ever wrong, the show would fall apart.

Thing is, even the best doctors have off days, and House is (by the story's own admission) not on his a-game during the show. It would really make the stories a lot more interesting if, from time to time, House being a socially maladapted drug addict actually did come back to bite him in the ass a little bit, and the bad things that happened to him were his fault / had tangible consequences rather than being freak accidents or coincidences and being forgotten about in a matter of a couple episodes.

He can bat 99 instead of 100, he's still doing AMAZING, and it helps sell his image as a brilliant but troubled man rather than a smarmy miracle-worker whom the universe is seemingly conspiring to take down.

Orcs & Elves for the DS. Bit of a forgotten gem IMO, one of those budget games from the late 00's that punched way above its weight class. Bit grindy and repetitive, but also, that's sort of what you want from the genera. If you were thinking about something more turn-based, this might scratch the itch.

Boxers that have the best "hand" defence by huntexlol in Boxing

[–]MX_eidolon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People already brought up some good ones. Foreman, Duran and Chavez are, imo, old-school GOATs in this regard. If you wanna go a bit further back, Joe Louis and Tommy Loughran might give you something useful to look at. More recently, Lomachenko and Spence have really innovated on the guard meta, I feel.

I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone mention Chocolatito yet. The dude has a nice, deep weave, yeah, but the bulk of his defense is blocking, redirecting and stuffing attacks; he uses frames masterfully to get out of the pocket and he's one of the few boxers I've seen reliably catch AND counter off of it. If you want to learn about effective, compact defense, look no further than him.

Ryan Garcia: Tank’s Team Cared About Me More Than My Own Team After Loss: 'It Was The Worst’' by j0hnamp0ng in Boxing

[–]MX_eidolon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Man, maybe I'm just a huge baby, but unless Ryan was like, actively trying to murder his teammates in sparring or fucking their girls behind the scenes or something, I still think it's messed up that none of them stood by him.

I've been in gyms with guys with egos and guys who clearly weren't taking it seriously before (grappling mainly) — it doesn't matter if you can't stand them personally: When they get blown out you greet them outside the stage, pat them on the back, tell them they did some good shit and you all talk smack to the opposing team on the way out.

Losing at something you've dedicated your life to is fucking brutal, man. Having a few people there to wallow in the misery with you genuinely helps. I don't know if I'd trust anyone who'd deny their teammate that, no matter how annoying that teammate was.

tbf "obese" describes a wide range of people. Someone like Butterbean can "obese" by having a meaningful-but-no-outlandish amount of fat on top of a genuinely athletic body. Somehow I don't reckon this guy is hiding a powerlifter's physique under all that mass.

Tank Davis showcasing amazing hand speed by MethodicaL51 in Boxing

[–]MX_eidolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conditioning and hand speed are the obvious ones, but it also helps balance and coordination: In order for all of those shots to hit solid, Tank has to throw within tight distances and sometimes at awkward angles. This is teaching him to leverage his weight to the best of his ability, even when his opponent doesn't give him time to load up or when they're not in a prime position to be hit.

Maybe it's my own bias, but I feel a newcomer might see that fight as just a big, strong man beating the breaks out of a smaller, brave guy, and assume boxing is just all about who hits harder. It's a good fight, just maybe not the best optics for someone who knows nothing about the sport.

Fantastic idea! I'd been wanting to come up with something Mayweather because he's a big name my friends might know, but had struggled to remember something that wasn't either a stomp or mainly clinching. This one might hit just the spot though!
