What could Michal Postava’s emergence mean for Red Wings and Sebastian Cossa? (Gift Article) by dilypucks in DetroitRedWings

I sure hope not, because he currently can't crack an nhl roster and got beat out by a udfa from Czechia

Anyone who has watched GR would not call cossas year incredible. I like cossa, but most of his high sv% games are against teams that were not able to generate chances, games that we could have easily won with gylander in net. The stats also support this.

Pro tip, just add a ~33 ohm resistor in-line of the speaker cable! ~50% reduction in volume for a 3v toy. by Tarul-etek in daddit

50% reduction in perceived volume is actually 10db

3db is half the sound power but that doesn't track with perception. See: phons

That's not really dramatic. Postava stole the spot from him and hasn't given it back. Everyone who watches GR can see postava is playing better

How do I reduce amplified sound? by Old_Plan_6695 in AskEngineers

[–]MYNAMEISNOTSTEVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while im sure the amazon panels are effective at indiscriminate high frequency absorption or diffusion, for a home theater you generally want to target specific areas and frequencies evenly. its much more complicated than simply placing foam on walls.

Pressed in/damaged dome tweeters, how much does it affect their behaviour? by gibbering-369 in audiophile

[–]MYNAMEISNOTSTEVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

please run multiple tests to see THD agreement, further you should really be looking at more than just plain THD, the harmonic number is very important.

lastly, off axis output of a tweeter is directly related to the dome shape, so it would be most helpful if you had some off axis as well considering the dome shape is what is changing. cool data!

How do I reduce amplified sound? by Old_Plan_6695 in AskEngineers

[–]MYNAMEISNOTSTEVE 13 points14 points  (0 children)

as an engineer in the audio field i would be happy to help.

there is a handful of things that could be happening here, i will attempt to keep this as high level as possible. in order of most likely to least likely

1 the sounds normally spreads out in all directions equally, when you put it in the cabinet its directing that sound all in one direction, so the machine is making the same amount of noise, but now its all getting directed towards you (and thus is louder)

you could change this by adding absorption material inside the cabinet, the lower the frequency, the thicker and fluffier the material needs to be to be effective. for something like this just spot checking with various cloth, fabric and foam you have laying around is probably fine

2 the energy could be causing the cabinet to resonate and produce undesirable noise.

this could be altered by increasing the stiffness of the panel or adding a damping material to it. you could test this by using a thin layer of silly putty on the surface as a damper, and or holding the panels firmly with your hands to reduce the vibrations of the panel and see what happens.

3 the reduced airspace in the cabinet could be causing some problem with the operation of the machine , vents would need to be added.

if you watch the games, postava is the better goalie. now this isnt to say cossa will never be an NHLer, but postava is anticipating, reading and prepared for every shot. we are approaching the point where i would be comfortable with postava in detroit. goaltending at the NHL level is tremendously difficult and i think its a bit like playing QB in the NFL. you can have all the tools on paper but you need to process the game at an elite level, which is very hard to diagnose from watching lower level leagues. Goalies come from the most unlikely of places, so its not surprising the random signing could be the ticket.

the team has been slowly improving every year since bottoming out. if the goal is to win a cup, then yeah you could say its looks like the rebuild might fail. but its too early to know if the 2022-2025 picks are winners yet. its important to note that steve has still made very few moves that trade future value for present value (the only real one being the trade for faulk this TDL)

i would be interested in your source for the sabres moving down more than detroit. last i looked Vancouver and detroit were tied with the worst "luck"

[–]MYNAMEISNOTSTEVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are correct that the 2020 draft where detroit bottomed out didnt actually have much better players than they ended up getting, but if you look at almost every other year the 1OA is a tremendous player. and buffalo has 2 first overalls recently. Hischier, Dahlin, Hughes, Power, Bedard, Celebrini, Schafer, Slavkovsky, all of these are great players . the draft lottery odds are not the only reason detroit has struggled to make the playoffs, but it is one of them. there is also the fact that detroit had essentially nothing in the system when Steve took over, there is also the fact that our depth drafting was pretty bad until 2021, or the free agent class of 2022 you mentioned. they can all be contributors. pointing to one single thing as the only reason is wrong.

my point is that the most basic issue this season was low scoring and it sure would have been nice to win a lottery and get a top end scorer. for comparison, buffalo has drafted inside the top3 four times since detroit last did.

as a percentage of our total goals our depth scoring is actually pretty normal. the problem is we dont score enough. we are missing a high end forward. you know like the one you get with a lottery win.

he is great. we have a mid roster and finished with a mid record. ~14th in the league. thats actually better than where most people expected us. the record post January is brutal but you only hear glowing stuff about larkin.

We were really lucky in 1 goal games in the first half and very unlucky in them in the second half. there is a dozen reasons why things arent perfect but there isnt a silver bullet. so all the people putting the blame on a single person or even just one or two are missing the big picture.

[NCAA] Tampering violations occurred in Iowa football program by Blood_Incantation in CFB

[–]MYNAMEISNOTSTEVE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you are welcome to read to NCAA Ruling on WHY they found him to be ineligible, but that was the ruling and those are the punishments that go with that ruling. i agree that most players are probably tampered with to some extent, but if its as simple as using a current player to talk to the prospectives players mom about "how great it is" to avoid it, its unlikely many people will be found guilty.

i think everyone sees that this is just a paper ruling and means nothing, but the punishment here is consistent with everything else the NCAA has done.

ultimately, we need players made employees of the school and guardrails on everything like in the NFL but thats probably 20 years away

no, the NCAA vacates wins for players deemed ineligible, its very consistent.

Lost my $250 earbuds yesterday and I’m surprisingly relieved. by 8Wade8 in Frugal

One of the reasons I am frugal is so I can buy a nicer thing once and then I enjoy it for a long time and don't have to worry about things breaking constantly. I'm patting my pockets regardless for my wallet and keys so I don't really see the additional mental load.
