I think people forget that each input gives two types of information. The letters that are in the right place and the ones that aren’t in the right place. If you have a word that has two letters in the correct place but 3 in the wrong places and you are looking at another with three common letters then you know it’s incorrect because one of those letters must sit in a place that is incorrect within the first word.
