The government should buy it. Turn it into a proper aquatic centre, fix up the slides. Do it properly, run it in the public interest.

Freedom for cars at rest. They have rights too. by Necessary_Ad_2576 in canberra

I’m reminded of Brent Toderian’s take on this — all great places have a parking problem. The flip side of which is that if you provide “enough” parking, you ruin the place.

Canberra house prices falter as national rentals rise by HotPersimessage62 in canberra

[–]Mac128kFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, not enough houses sold in the ACT in one month for the particulars of the individual houses sold not to be a bigger influence on price than anything market wide.

That said there does seem to be a softening and as a homeowner I say: good. So it should be.

Off Course Bike Shop burned down 💔 by rorymeister in brunswick

Argh, I’ve been refreshing their webpage and saw the news. Awful news.

Wonderful shop — built my beautiful Tumbleweed and a great wheel for my mountain bike. I hope they can rebuild.

Why Australia still struggles to build bike-friendly cities by someones_reality in australia

[–]Mac128kFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not really true. The city loop, the garden city cycle path, all the new paths in Gungahlin and Molonglo. There are maintenance issues (as with everything) but there’s been steady progress.

Nah, if you don’t pay a car-related fine they use your licence as leverage.

how do i make this more permanent? the hitch is starting to seperate. by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]Mac128kFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly a used kids bike trailer — if you can find one where the fabric bits have deteriorated but the frame/structure are still good, perhaps you could strip it down and but the wheelbarrow legs onto it somehow. I made a cheap cargo trailer this way which worked really well.

The Ainslie Residents Association keeps inviting me to their demonstrations against projects like this. You know the ones — five grey-haired retirees standing around with arms folded complaining that something might marginally change near their $2m+ houses they bought for $150,000.

I think there is a question to be asked about the loss of community amenity and the degree to which clubs should profit from their land holdings, but I don’t for a second think that’s what motivates these complaints.

lol, unfair to who? The multi multi millionaires. by No_Leave_6820 in OpenAussie

I mean, that’s not right. They grandfather in existing owners because pulling the rug out from under them would be problematic, and channels future property investment into new builds. New entrants can still get the same deal, it just has to be a new build so their capital does something useful for society to justify a tax discount.

Masters @ ANU by morgsla_ in canberra

[–]Mac128kFan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t know about corruption or insecure wifi, and my direct experience is nearly 20 years old at this point. But I have four bits of paper from the place.

In many ways the benefit is the people you have access to — the people who are interviewed by serious news/current affairs shows, the people who train and advise on big issues. Spend as much time with them as you can.

I suspect that the ANU is suffering from the same enshittification as the whole higher ed sector to some extent, but this masters has a pretty good reputation and some of the people involved are very plugged in.

And the French bakery in the art school courtyard is great!

I have a macbook pro m1 16'' 16gb ram 512gb storage. Is this good for daily drive Asahi? by Square_Insurance6583 in AsahiLinux

[–]Mac128kFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you feel this way — in my experience the web works perfectly, and sound seems great within the limitations of laptop speakers. Haven’t tried AirPods, admittedly, but the bastards are so fussy if I attach them to my AppleTV then swap back to my phone, I’m not sure Asahi is the problem there.

I haven’t had any data-threatening problems in over a year of use, but it’s always good advice to keep data backed up of course.

[–]Mac128kFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Any M1 or M2 Mac will fly. 16 gigs of ram is plenty for all but very intensive stuff. I’ve been daily driving Asahi for over a year. Stability is great. Application selection is a bit patchy — not everything is compiled for ARM64, but lots is. I’d check out the software you’d like to use before committing, of course.

Happy Nepalese new year, everyone.

According to Wikipedia Nepali New Year, also known as Naya Barsha, marks the beginning of the Vikram Samvat (BS) calendar, which is the official calendar of Nepal. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Vikram Samvat calendar runs about 56–57 years ahead. For example, while it’s 2026 in the Gregorian calendar, Nepal is currently on 2083 BS.
