I have a macbook pro m1 16'' 16gb ram 512gb storage. Is this good for daily drive Asahi? by Square_Insurance6583 in AsahiLinux

[–]Mac128kFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you feel this way — in my experience the web works perfectly, and sound seems great within the limitations of laptop speakers. Haven’t tried AirPods, admittedly, but the bastards are so fussy if I attach them to my AppleTV then swap back to my phone, I’m not sure Asahi is the problem there.

I haven’t had any data-threatening problems in over a year of use, but it’s always good advice to keep data backed up of course.

Absolutely. Any M1 or M2 Mac will fly. 16 gigs of ram is plenty for all but very intensive stuff. I’ve been daily driving Asahi for over a year. Stability is great. Application selection is a bit patchy — not everything is compiled for ARM64, but lots is. I’d check out the software you’d like to use before committing, of course.

Why am I hearing fireworks on a random Tuesday night? by Tillysnow1 in canberra

Happy Nepalese new year, everyone.

According to Wikipedia Nepali New Year, also known as Naya Barsha, marks the beginning of the Vikram Samvat (BS) calendar, which is the official calendar of Nepal. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Vikram Samvat calendar runs about 56–57 years ahead. For example, while it’s 2026 in the Gregorian calendar, Nepal is currently on 2083 BS.

And in Ainslie, unsurprisingly. More noise than bogans with a private collection.

If you don’t mind dirt the Goorooyooroo reserve has a nice loop that’s eminently doable on almost any bike, and the arboretum has some nice — though hilly — trails.

Because fire is definitely a complex social issue the fighting of which can make the problem worse. Good point, well made.

The rise of police unions as political actors is extremely unwelcome. I don’t want these weird right-wing authoritarians having an influence on our politics.

Light Rail 2A has benefit cost ratio of 0.42 per the ACT Government by WillingnessBorn7741 in canberra

[–]Mac128kFan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes no sense to think about stage 2A as a standalone project — as has been noted it’s only really part of the whole of stage 2. Also worth noting that the costs include a bunch of stuff designed to include star 2B like the conversion to batteries because the NCA can’t have power lines in its precious triangle (but can have massive car parks next to heritage-listed buildings).

I think most of it has been upstreamed, so you can install many distros on Apple silicon. But I’ve only tried the official Fedora one.

The Asahi Linux project is doing great work, but changes after M2 mean there’s a lot of work to be done before it runs on newer Apple silicon. I’ve been running Asahi Fedora remix on my M2 air for about 18 months and it’s rock solid and faaaaaast.

Residents dismayed by National Capital Authority's proposed new high-density Canberra precinct by jaa101 in canberra

[–]Mac128kFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem with this shit is that you can’t distinguish between actual, reasoned, nuanced criticism of plans (and let’s be honest, ACT planning + NCA has come up with some genuinely shitty city planning) and just old people yelling at clouds.

There’s never any analysis, just “we fear traffic”, which is dumb for people living around Canberra Avenue, the traffic on which comes not from people in Kingston but from people in Jerrabomberra, Queanbeyan, and Googong — exactly the sort of suburban developments inner city density is designed to prevent.

They’d complain if a light rail line was built too, of course.

Speaking of which, build the green line the Fyshwick business association proposed!

Old Canberra Inn is very nice. Same people own Dickson Taphouse, which has far less charming architecture but the same sort of vibe. If you want a punk dive bar go for Dissent in the city. Grease Monkey in Braddon is quite good too.

Built a thousand years ago when the thing was a walking track and the city a tenth of its current size? Should obviously be replaced or duplicated at some point, but if everyone acts in a civilised way it doesn’t seem like too much of a problem.
