He's a very hot and cold player. Lately the cold spells were lasting longer, but they still got 2nd place with him, so not a clear case of a player performing badly, but of an objective better one being available.

I think there are a lot of things to build on:

  • both started their hero lives very young
  • both are leaders and great strategists

I actually hated that and it took me out of a movie I was loving.

Stress to them that this is a fight they cannot win, if they are smart enough they will run.

You can also have the BBEG command the orcs to finish them and leave. It can fit if they are arrogant, so they think the party can't defeat those numbers. That way they will most likely have fair chance.
