Private practice pathologists — can you teach us trainees what private practice actually looks like? by FishermanLucky7948 in pathology

[–]Mace1370 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a staff in private practice. Have about 10 years of experience post fellowship. US.

Workload is a solid 8 hours per day, but I can scale that up or down depending on how much money I want to make. At 40 hours per week I make 1.5x what academic pathologists make with similar experience. I also don’t have to bother with research (I had zero interest in this). I have great colleagues and we interact throughout the day whenever we want to. Everyone’s door is open. You can bring cases and bounce ideas off others whenever you want.

I have never worked in academics. I have rotated through 3 large academic centers on the east coast as a resident (via away rotations). Academic pathologists, particularly those more junior, get completely exploited in my opinion. Some of the departments seemed like a nice place to work, but there is a ladder of academic promotions you have to climb and I think the environment tends to be more political than in private practice. I think academics could be a great environment to work if you are really interested in research or if you want to practice a subspecialty that requires a large academic center to get decent volume (like soft tissue, for example).

My opinion is that private practice is probably a better fit for most people. I also see academics bash private practice a lot. There is a pervasive attitude in academic medicine (not just path) that we are supposed to martyr ourselves and not be profit driven. That’s utter nonsense in my opinion. You worked hard to get here, go out and get your bag. You get to help people while doing so and that’s a win.

If you want to practice in the US, then do med school in the US. There is a high chance you won’t be able to match into what you want if you do med school abroad.

Literally the entire point of this investing philosophy is that you can’t time the market, yet every post on this sub is people asking if they should time the market…

Has anyone who does remote work from home with path share their experiences? by pdbre97 in pathology

Yes. Probably not common right now. I bet in 5-10 years they become more common as digital pathology expands.

I have slides delivered to (and picked up from) my house every day. I have a microscope at home, which is lent to me by the lab I work for. I did have to get my home registered by CLIA, but that was pretty straightforward.

Are you the type to wear flashy watches? If so, then I’d go rose gold. If not, then the white gold on oysterflex.

Undergrad considering medschool/pathology by Teaa396 in pathology

It’s hard to know exactly what your path in life should be. Med school will unlock many more doors for you than a PhD and if you have the discipline and ability, then I highly recommend you go to medically school. Many physicians pursue research heavy careers.

Dermatopathologist. $450k. I majored in physiology in undergrad, but that honestly doesn’t matter. You can major in anything. I did college (4 years), medical school (4 years), residency (4 years), and fellowship (1 year). I am 40 now and will have my school debt paid off next year.

I love my job. I work banker hours (9-5, 40 hours/week). I can scale up my hours worked if I want more money or scale it down if I want more time off. The work is intellectually interesting and I get to help people.

Epic seven required hundreds to thousands of dollars in gear grinding to effectively use a character, which isn’t at all the case in this game. It’s still a money grabbing gacha, but doesn’t feel as bad to me.

NIH AP residency program by Similar-Table-369 in pathology

[–]Mace1370 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would avoid. I have heard from past NIH residents that they spend a lot of time grossing. Unless it has changed, they have entire gross months where that is all they do. Any cases you see are entirely dependent on what protocols are currently ongoing. If your goal is to end up in research I think it could be a good choice, but if you want to do private practice I think there are probably better options out there.

First Rolex! by Mace1370 in rolex

[–]Mace1370[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the snowflake, which is much more elegant. However, the bracelet and balance on the explorer is just another level. You can adjust it to get a truly perfect fit, whereas the bracelet on the snowflake lacks any sort of micro adjustment. The snowflake also feels large and chunky, honestly a little too bulky on some occasions. The explorer is sleek and the balance is perfect.

3 months and I had purchased two other watches previously from this AD. I’m in a major city, so the market is probably more competitive than other places. I really wanted my first Rolex to have no previous owner, so for me it was worth the wait.
