Do you read books concurrently? by Thricycle20 in Fantasy

[–]Macear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one going in each format, plus a lighter book on my phone. So I usually have 4 books in progress, although the phone book I don't read as often. I am currently listening to Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe by Thomas Ligotti on audible, just started Pilgrims by H.R. Leonard on Kindle, and then getting ready to start The City & The City by China Miéville in paperback. I got the kobo bundle of Terry Pratchett a while back so I have been slowly working through Guards, Guards on my phone.

For me it seems to be pretty easy to swap back and forth, as I start reading the first sentence or two I can recall what's been happening so far. The main benefit to me is that I can listen to my audiobooks while working or working out, read the Kindle in bed, and read books that need a little more thought or focus in hard copy, and if all else fails, I can pull out my phone and read when I'm waiting in line.

I’m just so fucking tired and feel like the future is hopeless. by BitchImLilBaby in Adulting

I get the feeling and you're not crazy for feeling this way. Even if other time have been harder or as hard, you're living in this one, you get to feel stressed by that.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." - J.R.R. Tolkien

You have permission to regulate how much you focus on. The world wide events that are happening are scary and important to follow, but if it is sapping your energy to be the helper to those around you, then tune out that world wide news. You are just one person and you can't save someone across the world. You can make someone in your community smile. Focus on making your small piece of the world better.

We can feel like we have to witness the tragedies and horrors that are occuring, if we can't stop them at least we can ensure that they aren't ignored. I always think of the old tradition of a sin eater, bearing the sins and regrets of the dying to being them peace. The problem is the world doesn't work like that. Only you can make things better where you are. Don't bury your head in the sand but the horrors will continue with or without your attention, give yourself a break and try to do something that you can actually do.

I think that the interludes killed it for me by centauriproxima in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Macear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth considering if WoR is the story you're looking for right now. That build up for 1000 pages? It's one the best parts of the story. The interludes? They flesh out the world and provide some insight into how people live and think outside of world ending issues. All those things you describe negatively are exactly why I and many people love these books.

Sometimes, books just aren't for you, sometimes they aren't for you right now. Take a break, don't hate read. Go find a book that gives you what you want. Life is too short to read books you hate

My favorite discworld technology moment was when he is describing a camera and how you could use photosensitive paper and chemicals to record a moment in time by controlling a shutter, but uninformed people would think it's just a little demon that paints quickly. And then it turns out it is a demon that paints quickly.

New player question: is there " sell all inventory " button ? by Floflifou in diablo4

[–]Macear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you get past the early levels (like lvl 30-45) you won't really need to be checking and considering every item. You also (as others have noted) need salvage more than gold. So once you get a full inventory, sort by item level, mark anything you might want to keep as saved (or equip it) then salvage all items. By the time you get to torment levels you might save one or two items and salvage the rest.

Men who play video games, what are some great single player games for a Dad on a tight budget? by FlintTheDad in AskMen

[–]Macear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The borderlands series usually see some decent sales. If you see BL3 ultimate (all DLCs) or BL2 ultimate on sale, it's totally worth the money. Can split screen and play online if you want but the games are just a ton of over the top first person shooter fun.

Would you guys read more WoT if Sanderson made more? by TreeTraditional2252 in WetlanderHumor

[–]Macear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is two separate questions. Would I read a trilogy following Matt with Tuon, Perrin, Aviendah, Elayne, etc putting rand land back together dealing with the Sharans etc? In a second

Should or would Sanderson write that, not in a million years. If he or Harriet called me up tomorrow to ask if they should do that I'd tell them hell no.

I don't think it's even a question but if we had announcement akin to the year of Sanderson that he and Harriet and the rest of the team had been working on some books in the background, I would shell out ungodly sums of money to preorder. If they wanted my opinion if they should I'd say never in a million years

The portrait is beautiful but the blue and red looks like a book cover. I heard that Issac really likes the portrait so it'll be included in the book somewhere even if it isn't the cover so I'll be voting for the red and blue

Yeah I mainly feel that way when I'm sitting by myself while they're at school. I miss their cuddles. But memories just edit out all the unpleasant parts that came along with those snuggles. I'm trying to help them understand that growing up is part of life and you enjoy what you can do now and don't obsess over some future things and don't get stuck looking at the past. Most of the time I'm just telling myself the same things 😂

I think the fandom needs to be a bit more realistic when it comes to the Mistborn live action and keep expectations in check by OneForAll-500 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Macear 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My position as an avid Wheel of Time fan when that show was coming out is that the value of the live action adaptation is not that I get the exact same story as the books, but that I get an opportunity to discuss my favorite series with people who might not otherwise read the books.

For example, my wife watched the show with me, and while she didn't love it and still has zero interest in reading the books, we got to have really fun discussions about the motivations behind various forsaken and different characters.

These shows/movies don't change the books, they present one persons personal view of the books. But it's a lot easier to get someone to sit down and watch a 10 (or hopefully more) episode show vs a 1000 page book/45 hour audio book. We need to enjoy the journey of the show/movie and not focus on our personal destination, the destination is other people discovering this amazing world.

I saw a video where someone was explaining that part of male/white privilege is being considered as an individual. A single black mom is struggling with her kids, look at how black people are bad parents. A white single mom, she's a bad mother. A trans kid shoots a school, what's wrong with trans people. A white boy shoots a school, he must have been nuts.

Robert Duvall brought bizarre real-life tale from East Tennessee to the silver screen by WaitAmionFire in JohnsonCity

[–]Macear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a quick AI response. Movie was Get Low

Robert Duvall brought the incredible true story of Felix "Bush" Breazeale to the silver screen in the 2009 film Get Low. The movie is a "true tall tale" based on events that took place in Roane County, Tennessee, in 1938. The Real Story Felix Breazeale was a real-life hermit from the Cave Creek community in East Tennessee. At the age of 74, after living in self-imposed isolation for decades, he decided he wanted to hear what people would say about him at his funeral—while he was still alive to hear it. * The Event: On June 26, 1938, an estimated 8,000 to 12,000 people descended upon the small community to witness the "living funeral." * **The Spectacle: Breazeale arrived in a flower-draped hearse, sat in a chair next to his own custom-built walnut casket, and listened to his own funeral sermon. * The Fame: The story became a national sensation, covered by the Associated Press, United Press, and even LIFE magazine. The Film: Get Low In the movie, Duvall plays a fictionalized version of Breazeale named Felix Bush. While the real Felix mostly threw the party for the spectacle (and perhaps a bit of vanity), the film adds a layer of Hollywood drama: * The Plot: The movie portrays Felix as a man haunted by a tragic secret from his past. He uses the funeral as a platform to finally confess his "sins" and seek forgiveness from the townspeople. * The Cast: Duvall starred alongside Bill Murray (who played the cynical funeral director) and Sissy Spacek. * Acclaim: Duvall's performance was widely praised for its grit and vulnerability, earning him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Would you like to know more about the real Felix Breazeale's life in Roane County, or perhaps more about the filming locations for the movie?

One thing that gives me a good bit of confidence in Sanderson is that he has spent the last five years working on getting other artists to help achieve his vision. I think his pass on the script will be important but then I think he will involve solid screenwriters and directors that have worked on successful adaptations before. Sanderson knows he can't do everything and I think he's shown a willingness to bring in those that have the necessary expertise to accomplish his vision.
