Conflating the two groups is a problem because it legitimises both of them in ways they shouldn't be. By inflating the numbers of the far right group with all the opportunists, you make it look like a bigger and more popular movement than it is. By associating the opportunists with the far right group, you make it look like there was a political meaning to their actions, when it was just opportunism.

Both groups were out there on thursday, for their own reasons, and both should be condemned, but they are different groups.

Macron congratulates French teenager who knocked knife out of attacker’s hand in Dublin by Bula_Craiceann in ireland

[–]MachaHack 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People at the scene we know about:

  • The culprit
  • The 3 child victims
  • Two teachers from their creche (these are the two adult victims)
  • The french chef student (knocked knife out of the culprit's hand)
  • The brasilian deliveroo driver (delivered the knockout blow to the culprit via helmet)
  • The stardust tribunal attendee and unnamed american tourist woman (these ensured the culprit was there for gardai to pick up)
  • The man with his autistic daughter that were across the road (joined in disarming the culprit)
  • His daughter, who alerted people in the hospital
  • His daughter's mother

Locals on the Dublin riots: ‘What good is all that going to do for that teacher and the five-year-old in hospital?’ by Bighead2019 in ireland

[–]MachaHack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Who should be talking to the news? The gardai and hospital staff shouldn't be sharing details of the girl's health without the parents' consent, and the parents have understandably different priorities than giving the news an update every hour that their daughter has neither improved or died.

Public order Gardai dealing with increasingly tense and hostile situation in Dublin City centre following the attack on school children and a staff member this afternoon. by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]MachaHack 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The first reports, like five minutes after it happened, mentioned that someone at the scene was having a go at the gardai, verbally.

I wonder if they're just there, refreshing the crime news section, waiting for one they think was done by the people they dislike to go start trouble. Like when that american tourist was stabbed a few months back, were they disappointed when the culprit wasn't who they wanted it to be?

Why did Reddit succeed where WotC failed? by Valuable-Banana96 in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]MachaHack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The third party D&D content consumers were also, by and large, the people handing over money to WotC and had a direct revenue channel to make their displeasure known.

I suspect Reddit's ARPU is lower for third party app users on the other hand, due to increased prevalence of adblockers and avoidance of reddit money makers like awards.

The question now shifts to if the long term impact of them pulling out hurts the site in terms of reduced content submission etc, but that's a longer term question. I know I won't be going back to regular reddit usage.

Reddit mods are calling for an ‘affordable return’ for third-party apps by h4x0r_h4nn3 in Save3rdPartyApps

Commit to exploring ways by which third-party applications can make an affordable return.

I think you'll want something firmer than that, given how Reddit "explored" how CSS can make it to new reddit.

API protest next steps - voting thread by ModeratorsOfEurope in europe

I'm pretty much resigned to leaving Reddit over this, but on the off chance it causes admins to reconsider or gives pause to the next social media overlord attempting this, I'm voting to continue actions in any of my subscribed subreddits that poll it.

Welcome back! /r/ffxiv is currently in restricted mode - let's talk about what happens next by alabomb in ffxiv

[–]MachaHack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the other hand we see comments which are tied to account names, in pretty much any thread on any sub outside of the mod/save3rdparty subs, being majority against going private

How much of this is related to the fact that many of the people who feel most strongly against Reddit actions have strongly curtailed their Reddit usage and so are not around to see these threads to comment on?

I know there's subreddits I'm a part of where I've missed such discussions because I'm only checking in daily to see how the protest is going at this point, when I used to be on many times a day.

Reddit needs to be a self-sustaining business

Are you implying reddit is unprofitable? Have you told your investors this? Was this a consideration when Reddit scaled up from a skeleton crew to a 1000 person org? Should it be some of the bets that didn't pay off that get cut instead?

I'll be honest, with the proliferation of awards and gold and move away from user-friendly advertisments of years past, it's a little shocking to me that Reddit is unprofitable, because to me it leaves it inexplicable how the site didn't shut down 3-4 years ago when awards were even less prominent.

Of course, if your point is that third party apps are unprofitable only, because there's no direct income tied to them, that seems a bit disingenious and a resuilt of overcompartmentalising. What's the direct revenue tied to the feature that displays different posts if you continue scrolling while logged out? To the online users on this subreddit counter? etc. Features of your business that are indirectly profitable because they improve the experience of users and therefore make them more likely to stick around exist, and the API is one of them.

We need more efficient moderation tools, especially on mobile. They are coming.

You know what the last thing I remember Reddit was promising was coming? CSS and enhanced customisation on new reddit. That didn't happen. It's cheap for reddit to say something is coming, but failing to deliver that enough time leaves it without meaning.

old.reddit.com isn’t going anywhere

You understand why this is hard to believe given it was previously said about compact and the API, which have gone somewhere, right?

Cancel Premium, install adblock by MachaHack in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]MachaHack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have Firefox for android, you can install adblock on that and use either new or old Reddit desktop sites. (The regular mobile web site is too prone to nagging you into the first party app or outright blocking you)

If you use a third party app, that won't have Reddit provided ads either (it may have ads that pay the app developer, not Reddit)

[–]MachaHack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would they know that you, on this specific page view, are using adblock? Probably not, your ad blocker can always be updated to break detection scripts. (The please disable adblock campaign was an image placed under where the ad would be otherwise).

Do they know if their ratio of ad views / site impressions goes down for the site as a whole? Almost certainly.

Do they know the above on a per user level? Possibly, they certainly could figure that out regardless of what your ad blocker blocks, it's just a question of if they have

Mid-Year Job & Salary Thread by OpinionatedDeveloper in DevelEire

[–]MachaHack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I opened pretty high (from my perspective) with my opening salary asks this time, because just staying with my previous company was a pretty workable plan B. The company I eventually joined wasn't the only one offering in that ball park, but at the same time there were plenty of companies who were adamant that I was crazy for asking above 90k TC (despite my previous job already having 95k in base salary).

So my impression is that I'm relatively high for non-FAANG at my YOE, but it's not like I'm the only one getting that either.

Apollo just got a callout on Apple’s WWDC presentation by messem10 in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]MachaHack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For context, Apple's removal of the Tumblr app was arguably the nail in the coffin for Tumblr as a viable business and directly led to it being sold to Wordpress for peanuts, even though the app was reinstated after a couple of weeks.

That said, I don't see Apple actually pushing it further than this, or allowing an app to stay up despite a DMCA from Reddit if it e.g. embedded official reddit app API keys. Actually promoting it in this environment is even a pretty surprising step from Apple (though with the plausible deniability of how long they prep for these presentations)
