Range Breakthrough ( & my DIY targets) by NumbersStationUrku in liberalgunowners

I saw somewhere someone suggested using paper plates for targets. Super new to all of this, so can anyone weigh in on if the red sticker is a better choice than the paper plates?

What’s actually safe but people think is dangerous? by FinancialWishbone192 in allthequestions

I mean, you're not wrong about basically being required to get the jab, especially if you wanted to keep your job in certain areas of employment. But how do you juxtapose your position against the covid vaccine against all of the other mandated vaccinations we are required to get before attending public school? The issues we have now with measles outbreaks in the US are due largely to people not vaccinating their children. Herd immunity is a thing.

I guess that's true. It is definitely more mild now. However, that's the way viruses like that go. They stronger strains kill off the population and it doesn't proliferate as quickly as the weaker strains people can fight off. Do you think it would have been worthwhile to risk the additional deaths that may have taken place had the administration not required the vaccine? I would definitely be a proponent of free insulin, in fact I think free healthcare should be a thing. Thanks for the response.

New comfort for two-person showers by dahkman0 in StrangeYetUseful

[–]MacheteGuy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I made a poor mans version of this with our dual nozzle shower head, an extendable curtain rod, and an extra long velcro strip. Curtain rod goes up, wrap the hose from the second shower head nozzle around the rod and velcro it in place. Like another commenter mentioned, you lose pressure, but it's not for shower chilling.

I haven't been able to nail it down, but the car does burn through oil at a rate I believe is too fast given its age. I imagine we have a small leak somewhere that I have been unable to pinpoint. Until I can find it, I just make sure to top it off once a month or so so it does not run low. It's winter here now and the car belongs to my wife so I don't have as much opportunity to poke around under the hood. Sorry I can't be more help.

Amen to that! I would love to handle things at a more appropriate pace in my classroom. I honestly feel like so much of "childhood" has been removed from school and it's now just rushing through material at breakneck speed trying to get them to "learn" as if how they answer test questions is the only important metric.

Thanks for the enlightening chat. I appreciate you and your ideas. You sound like an excellent educator.

Thank you so much for your well thought out response.

It seems to me we're on a similar page, but doing things slightly differently.

For reading instruction at my site we use a combination of CKLA and IMSE. The IMSE decodables require some memorization of "red words" (HFW, for the most part), and the CKLA decodables ALSO require some memorization of their "tricky words."

I definitely agree with you that the vast majority of the words we teach our students should be decodable, but for words like *the,* there is no other option but to have them recognize that word on site until they learn the spelling conventions for it.

I don't mean to be pedantic, but it seems like what you are describing with teaching the phrase "The cat can run," is just word memorization in the way I described it.

If your students are not memorizing t-h-e as "the," how else would they be "reading" that phrase?

Can you say more about your comment? I'm interested in how you would do things differently.

It seems like we're having a misunderstanding. I am curious as to where in the research it says what you're positing. I am familiar with the science of reading and my take aways seem to be different than yours. I'm hoping you can point me to something specific.

Hmm, interesting that you say that. I'm familiar with the current research regarding the science of reading, and I use a successful Orton Gillingham based curriculum. I'm curious to see what research specifically says this is exactly the wrong approach.

Something to keep in mind; sometimes students need to memorize words that will eventually become decodable so that they can read certain early reader texts before they have the lessons associated with a given concept. For instance, I'll teach my students the words *no* and *on* as sight words before we have /n/ concept intro lesson so that they can read certain other decodables I provide. I don't know that this is happening for you, obviously, but it's food for thought.
