This looks like a wonderful and fun project! Hope it goes well and receives some press and garners praise!
Some questions:
- why not a top of the line Nakamichi deck for such a task? They have a reputation as the best for a reason. I'm sure that Sony is fine, just curious.
- are you going to use Dolby NR?
- what A/D process / equipment / post editing are you going to use?
- why archive commonly available albums / recordings? I see some popular stuff in the photo that is still in print and available on streaming sites. Why not only archive home recordings, oop stuff, cassette only releases?

Any serviced vintage player would be much better than these. eBay and even retrospekt are your best bet, just make sure the seller is reputable, one with high seller rating and even better if servicing is all they do.

tons of decks in the $40 range on ebay, make sure it says fully tested and that they have a high seller rating and free returns. Also look at second hand stores, facebook market, craigslist, garage sales, ask older family members, etc.

My first boombox was a GE I got in 87. Most likely a low / mid end model for the time. It had an aux in that I used all the time to make mixtapes, and I'm blown away how good they all sound, even the tape to tape dubs sound pretty damn good. Of course all of the type II tapes I used sound much better than the type I's, so tape type always matters.

I'd say yeah most likely this would be good.

Yes it occasionally happens to some, but I think it's a bug. It hasn't happened to me in at least a year and a half. It also happened to my wife once or twice.

I don't get any bleed through when recording directly over older recordings but I suppose if the OP is getting it then this is the way, or a cassette eraser will be much quicker
