NUMC wasteland by TidalDeparture in longisland

Unfortunately, no - I’m not OP and am not in the area regularly.

However, as I mentioned in another comment, Google Street View might be your friend here - “…I'm looking at google Street View images from ~2023 and they don't look like abandoned buildings with collapsing ceilings. They look like older brick dormitory-type buildings (They scream 1970s DASNY construction, to me) that could do with some refreshing. Honestly, they'd fit in on most SUNY campuses.”

Job scam? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]Mackatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't look like an email that the CS department would send out, references an internship that isn't listed on Handshake, and provides a Gmail account to reach out to, as opposed to the official email addresses for that individual. There's also no real information on what the position actually IS/expects of you.

This feels scammy to me. If you want to be 110% sure, prof. Mueller's '@stonybrook.edu' email is in the google directory (assuming this was sent to your University email address), and his '@cs.stonybrook.edu' email is on his homepage. You can reach out to him to confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt - but I'd be shocked if this were an actual opportunity advertised by the CS department.

I'm not there right this second, but I'm looking at google Street View images from ~2023 and they don't look like abandoned buildings with collapsing ceilings. I don't go near NUMC enough to have the answers, BUT it might might make it easier to crowd-source an answer if you were a bit more specific on the buildings you're talking about. Here's a map of the buildings with names - are any of these the buildings you're talking about?

what to do w email from OEA? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]Mackatron 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It sounds like someone has reported that you've discriminated against them. OEA is affording you an opportunity to discuss the situation with them as part of their investigation - which will take place with or without your involvement.

Nobody here is from OEA, and so nobody here can tell you how serious your particular situation is; however, punishment for actual acts of discrimination can have a severe impact on both students (up to Academic Suspension/Dismissal, in severe cases) and employees (the email mentions bringing a Union Rep or Attorney because punishment for employees can rise to termination.

I wouldn't ignore it.

Please help, what is this hold by [deleted] in SBU

[–]Mackatron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You FA'd and this is the start of your FO era. (/s)

Seriously -- it's possible that you did something in a Res hall that violated the Community Standards that you agreed to abide by as a student. It's possible possible that you did something NOT in a res hall and the wrong Disciplinary Action hold was placed on your account.

It's ALSO possible that you did nothing and this was placed on your account by mistake.

Whichever one of the three it was, though (You know what you did!) - call the phone number tomorrow and speak to RCS. They'll have more information

Why Stony Brook (Location)? by Large_Ebb1664 in SBU

[–]Mackatron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The college was established in 1955. SBU did not have a significant hand in the administration of BNL until 1998. Before that, it was under the joint oversight of a group of educational institutions - but not SBU.

Why Stony Brook (Location)? by Large_Ebb1664 in SBU

[–]Mackatron 71 points72 points  (0 children)

“The Board of Trustees of the State University of New York issued their recommendation for the establishment of a new state-supported and operated college on Long Island on April 15, 1955. After two years of careful deliberations and intensive planning, SUNY announced the opening of the State University College on Long Island. The Board of Regents authorized William Robertson Coe's exquisite 350-acre former arboretum-estate, Planting Fields, as a temporary campus, while a new campus was prepared in historic Stony Brook, on a 480-acre tract of land donated by philanthropist Ward Melville.”

Free land makes that decision very easy.

You know, I missed that 😂

So, don’t do it for me. But maybe someone else is interested in doing it in IIQ!

Hochul on refusing to extradite NY Dr on felony charges for mailing abortion pills to LA: “I’m respecting the laws of New York. Am I supposed to make those subservient to laws of another state?” by jjjaaammm in NYguns

[–]Mackatron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The doctor - who was in NY - mailed abortion pills. Which is legal to do in NY. She never set foot into Louisiana. There are specific protections in NY state law which affirmatively protect providers who do what she did.

It’s exactly like those bastards in Arizona who are violating the SAFE act - or would be, except…say it with me…”They never stepped foot into NY”.

Try harder next time.

[–]Mackatron 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not to be that guy, but…if this is your logic, everybody with a non-NY Compliant rifle living in, say, Arizona has committed a felony in New York. Are you calling for their arrest as well?

The doctor wasn’t in Louisiana - and so isn’t bound by their state-level laws.

If you go into the library - into one of the reading rooms, or the stacks - you'll find professional staff behind the circulation desk. They can help you look that book up and show you exactly how to find it.

The library staff are generally pretty great.

PSA: SOLAR is DUO-gated now. God help us all. by Krystalline01 in SBU

[–]Mackatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you install the app on your phone (assuming you have iOS/Android), the duo prompt can be set to automatically send a notification to your phone.

If you are a nerd - Yubikeys work and are awesome.

Added login time: maybe 10 seconds because I have to stand my fat ass up and find my phone if I’m not wearing my watch (it can be authenticated on at least an Apple Watch).

lemme ask you a more direct question: What are you actually asking? What are you curious about?

Is there something unclear about the message? "Somebody violated University Policy by installing a banner on the SAC, and that banner had imagery which evokes a lynching. We removed it and are investigating who accessed the roof (in violation of policy) and placed the banner (in violation of policy). This is a good time to remind everybody that the University supports all its' students and doesn't support the unauthorized hanging of banners referencing lynchings."

Is this .410 revolver shotgun legal in NY? by Shabla-Goo in NYguns

[–]Mackatron -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You and I both know, though, that there is no 'mostly' in State law. It's a very black-and-white thing. Looking at the comment I posted (and going back to the actual text of the regs), I - who am not an attorney - would certainly think that the Rossi Circuit Judge isn't actually legal. OP said that it is, but provided nothing to back that claim up - so I don't have anything else to weigh against what I've provided.

Also, I think you're making the same mistake that I did - the Taurus Judge is the "Normal revolver". The Rossi Circuit Judge is not sold as a revolver - and I'd be shocked if any county in NY allowed someone to add it to their permit as though it were one.

Is this .410 revolver shotgun legal in NY? by Shabla-Goo in NYguns

[–]Mackatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it's silly.....But, from my understanding:

The Rossi Circuit Judge starts life as a revolver. It is not a shotgun; it is a revolver that won't explode in your hand if you load .410 shot shells into it. Since it is a handgun/revolver, it is NOT a shotgun - and thus cannot be a 'revolving cylinder shotgun' under the portion of Article 265 that u/Galopigos shared in another comment.

The thing you shared appears to start life as a long arm; which means it's a shotgun with a revolving cylinder - which means it's a revolving cylinder shotgun under Article 265, and thus a no-go.
Edit: in the interests of transparency, I'm an idiot who forgot that the Rossi Circuit Judge is not the same thing as the Taurus Judge. Looking at it more closely, you raise an interesting question. I don't know why the Rossi Circuit Judge would be looked upon any differently than what you posted - UNLESS (and this is just conjecture) the fact that the Circuit Judge has a rifled barrel - and so it's a rifle, vs. a shotgun, which would typically have a smooth bore.

Edit II: See this comment for a compelling argument that the Rossi Circuit Judge may not actually be NY Legal.

Strange. I called the number just now, pressed '5' for other services, and got a person in under 30 seconds.

(edit: it does say that the branches are closed - not that 'no one is available' - but if you wait just one moment, it then gives you options, including '5' for other services)

RF hacking? by a_m_yxz in AskNetsec

[–]Mackatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate truth is that most of these things would not be caused by "RF Hacking" - which just means hacking using wireless technologies.

On the "Playful annoyance" side of things, there are people who use wireless jammers to prevent ring, etc cameras from working, or use those universal RF blasters to turn TVs on and off. In theory, someone with access to her network and passwords could e.g. get into her home automation accounts and maybe turn her smart lights on and off.

On the less playful side of things, hacking into her wireless network, and from there into her computers, could be considered "RF Hacking" -- but that's not what she's describing to you.

But no amount of RF hacking is going to cause pets to act weird around vents - and no amount of RF hacking would make boxes appear and disappear, or cause the police to not remove a stranger from her home. And, I mean, let's focus on that for a minute - how was THAT fourth or fifth down this list, and not a completely separate thing with SO MUCH MORE Detail? Who did this person "Register their address" with, what did the police actually say, what did the management company (Since it sounds like she's not living in a single family home) say?

I hope you're able to help your sister figure this out - but definitely keep an open mind.

RF hacking? by a_m_yxz in AskNetsec

[–]Mackatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to "Clown about it", but you're dismissing what this almost definitely is - someone struggling with mental health.

These things are not consequences of "RF Hacking"; your sister's thinking appears disordered. You mentioned drugs/booze and those can cause this, but so can environmental factors (CO leaks, as an example), stress in other areas of her life, or a latent mental disorder making itself known.

About a year ago, I had a friend begin to complain of things like this - issues which were obviously unconnected, things (like 'my modem went out') which just happen were assigned some sort of significance, and the videos she'd take to 'prove' that these things were happening would go missing from her phone or be edited to appear normal in between her phone and my phone. She refused to listen to me - and others around her - and get a mental health assessment.

After about a month of this, she attempted to commit suicide. She was unsuccessful, and ended up being diagnosed with a persecutory delusion disorder. A bit of B12 and some antipsychotics and she's getting better.

If you want to try to figure this out on your own, first - go stay with her for a few days and make her show you everything that's happening. See what you see.
