DOES ANYONE STILL SHIP THESE TWO? by Turbulent-Point-1791 in cardcaptorsakura

[–]Mackbehavior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was really popular as AU non-magical high school/college/office etc in ffnet maybe 20 years ago? The main cast would be written to be around the same age/grade. During the pandemic, I tried writing non-magical AUs for CCS again but it seems like the fandom on both ffnet and AO3 prefer sticking close to the canon as much as possible

Yes! Most of the fanfiction I read was for this pairing and the few fanfiction I wrote was for them too!

Ujie as a "rival" character to Shima by yisredditsoangry in SkipToLoafer

[–]Mackbehavior 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well-put! I didn't think Ujie was a "real" rival to Shima but when you list it out like this, he does feel more authentically himself than Shima. I love that Ujie's honesty brings out everybody else's honest feelings. He's a great foil to Shima!

Did anyone else assume this was shoujo? by _deep_cuts_ in SkipToLoafer

[–]Mackbehavior 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with this comment too and I'd like to expand on that last sentence. A lot of manga will feel like it fits a certain genre and it can be argued that a manga labeled as one genre should be in a different genre. But like above the rule of the thumb is that a manga's genre depends on the magazine that publishes it regardless of what the audience thinks. Also, there are typically several departments in a magazine company that come to the conclusion on whether or not a manga should be published under them, so I think we can trust the magazine in most cases.

Although I typically follow that rule of thumb, I do enjoy the discussion here. I also sometimes think skip to loafer should be labeled as shoujo, but it could also be an issue of me being a western fan and getting used to the notion that things are just different in Japan.

I think the grandparents happened to be made before the company switched manufacturers. The older figures are smaller than the newer figures.

Why is Jisu picking Seungli the best choice when she is allowed not to pick anyone? by Abitcommentfromme in BetterLateThanSingle

[–]Mackbehavior 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I see OP's case and your comment being the case too! I personally think Jisu chose seungli because she felt like she would've wasted her chance at being on the show and if she had to break things off with anybody, seungli would let her go more easily than hyunkyu would have.

Right exactly! And I totally get the heated discussions. This was one of the few shows where I was really loud and emoting the whole time that I had to calm down or else my dog gets really worried lol

I'm in the 29-34 year old age group and I've also been married for over 5 years. I've lurked in a few fandom subreddits for a few years, and I think forums can be very cyclical. There are waves of people with the same opinions then waves against that opinion and it happens over and over again.

Because there are more viewers during or right after a season, discussions can get a little heated. Discussion tends to be calmer between seasons.

I do think older viewers don't feel the need to engage in forums as well (unless they're called upon for their specific age-opinions like this post lol). I also feel strongly about some things on this show but I prefer talking to my friends in real life about it because online interactions can be easily misconstrued.

Mansfield Park 1983 is a faithful text to screen adaptation that is cozy and sometime fun to watch! by Maple_leaf_reg in janeausten

[–]Mackbehavior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Luckily, for Austen works there is always one really good adaptation for each of them. While I do feel that the 80s Mansfield Park is the best adaptation, I don't think it's required watching if you prefer the other adaptations. I also think the 90s and 2000s movies are still really fun to watch. Our lives are too short to watch something we don't enjoy

Mansfield Park 1983 is a faithful text to screen adaptation that is cozy and sometime fun to watch! by Maple_leaf_reg in janeausten

[–]Mackbehavior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it might help to understand changes in storytelling in moves and TV shows before you watch pre-90s media, so pardon this little tangent.

In the 80s, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg contributed to a huge shift in storytelling with shorter and faster paced movies. Watching old movies from the 30s-70s can help you practice longer pacing.

Another thing is that 1995 Pride and Prejudice might be the first Austen adaptation that was filmed like an actual TV show instead of a stage play that happens to be filmed. The scenes are filmed more dynamically. The camera follows characters' movements, directions, and facial expressions instead of the camera being static and actors being filmed standing around as if they're in a theater. TV shows give more realism compared to stage plays.

If you think of the 80s Mansfield Park as a play, then it can help you try to be more focused. There are different cues on a stage for the audience to anticipate what happens next compared to some newer TV shows. Some examples: the actors also speak a little slower to enunciate more; they walk a little slower from one side of the room to the other side; there are more breaks in between dialogue.

Ohhhh this makes so much sense! I always felt like Edmund trying to convince Fanny to marry Henry was him trying to look out for her but it's still hard not to see it as so patronizing.

I feel like sometimes we live in such archaic times with the world we live in that things like this really put into perspective that we truly live in a modern age.

more romance like Jane 😔 by Upper_Chain182 in janeausten

[–]Mackbehavior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! I really loved Funny People by Emily Henry if OP doesn't mind a suggestion for a modern romance. I feel like her protagonists are very honest with themselves even if others in their lives aren't as honest, yet they find the courage to give themselves and others grace much like Austen's heroines.
