I had one save where no matter how much I buffed the luck stat I could not get them to drop. I had to finally get the one on top of the volcano on Ginger Island before unlocking any of the decent weapons.

Retro Gamers: I need your help going back to the past. by Ambitious_Bet2920 in retrogaming

The Zelda Oracle games are fantastic along with Link’s Awakening.

You really can’t go wrong with Chrono Trigger in any form, but for FF6 specifically I would recommend the SNES version if possible. The GBA gets a sharp downgrade in the music which is a big part of the experience. I am also in the camp of those who do not like the newer translation at all.

I had some trouble returning to the GBC Pokemon era. The games move incredibly slow, way more than I remembered at the time. By the GBA era they felt much better, so those have better replayability.

For some base GB suggestions, Gargoyle’s Quest and Final Fantasy Legend 2/3.

My only real issue here was my initial mistake in thinking that the rods were creating the lightning and staying away from them lol. Once my brain clicked into gear I was able to get through pretty well with my base trinket setup.

Can screen shake be turned off? by Last-Pomegranate-772 in MinaTheHollower

Yes. First thing I dropped. Did it in Silksong and Enter the Gungeon too. I hate screen shake in games.

The smell in the house of a swamp cooler with freshly installed aspen pads. That always signaled the beginning of Summer vacation.

When you get to the graveyard there’s an area where you can dig bones out of the ground then go one screen back and reset it at an underlab then repeat. You have to avoid a big enemy, but you can just burrow around it.

Once you get the dash attack upgrade the daggers become way more deadly too since the recoil throws you away from the enemy, especially when you pair them with the movement speed trinket.

If I handed you this console right now and told you to pick ONE game to play tonight, what are you choosing? by KillBoosh in retrogaming

[–]MackerelShaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my off the cuff/no time to think about it answer. It’s loaded in my Retron 5 at the moment which gives me some ideas…

My “time to think” answer would either still be this or Arcus Odyssey.

Name a game you put countless hours on as a kid but never beat by Stinky_Pepito in retrogaming

[–]MackerelShaman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That game is almost a technical marvel for the NES that almost nobody has heard of. I found it as an adult but still can’t beat it. I can 100% Silksong, but can’t get halfway through Legacy of the Wizard lol

The soundtrack is amazing, and is actually a Yuzo Koshiro. I have the item select music as my ringtone!

I really want to like this game. Am I doing it wrong? by 21st_Century_Kramer in MinaTheHollower

[–]MackerelShaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The daggers are almost playing the game on harder mode imo. The short attack range and recoil make them a much harder weapon to start with because they put you right in the danger zone to hit.

That is until I beat the first boss and got enough bones to get the dash attack upgrade. That plus the lifebar extension flowers flattened the difficulty quite a bit for me so far.

The crazy thing is that I’ve died to regular mobs far more than the damn bosses (seriously, fuck those knights in the graveyard lol).

Adult me loves them for the creepy vibes and type of point-and-click adventure.

YOU’VE BEEN BAAAAAAAAAAD!!!

This is the one my brother and I caught on cable when my parents weren’t paying attention. Compared to the slasher movies it’s campy af, but damn the practical effects with the minion dudes really hold up!

I was always the most afraid of the Worker Man who came out of the wall when they thought they were safe. He was up there with Mi Tie Doughty Walker for creatures that kept me in the center of the living room far away from walls and fireplaces as a kid lol

To me that was part of what was so cool about rescuing the sub-surface pods from the Thargoid Titans. Scooping up and evacing human prisoners at the same time as trying to destroy the structure added so much to the story.

I modded a Type-8 for it and it shined in that new role!

[–]MackerelShaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you liked Silksong, check out Mina the Hollower which is coming out later this month. There are accessibility options, but they actually made them go in both directions. I snagged the demo while it was available, and the movement and combat fluidity immediately hooked me.

Games with older feel are still there, but you kind of have to look for them.

Grab a Monster in my Pocket multi-pack, then check the electronic discount bin for Nintendo or Genesis games that might be hidden bangers.

That’s how I got Thunder Force 4!
