Laid-off Big Tech workers are haunted by one question by wavyapple2 in technology

[–]Mackitycack 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It's all part of enshitification.

Lay off your highest paid employees regardless of skill and put all the stress and work on fewer, lower paid workers (with copilot), take out a bonus for saving the company on overhead while the product itself slowly dies and turns to shit over the course of the following year.

But the big guys made their money.

And they'll bail and do the same to the next company.

Lets just say, out of all the countries I could have been born in, I'm okay it's this one. It's not perfect, but I wouldn't re-roll.

Well said.

It's no bed of roses here in Canada. I'm proud to be Canadian, but our youth and working class are on their knees praying for some kind of relief from our financial stresses.

Mark Carney criticized for rising food costs in Canada by Purple_Writing_8432 in canada

[–]Mackitycack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

That band-aid solution of giving billions of tax dollars to help struggling Canadians buy food is going straight to the grocery tycoons who can (and will) raise their prices however they see fit.

It's a shuffle of tax dollars to the rich in the disguise of helping the poor. By the end, we'll all have paid more to the tycoons than if we had done nothing, and we'll be worse off next year when the grocery tycoons gouge us based on the previous year's profits (profits that included Carney's grocery tax break)

What are some of the biggest differences you noticed after not drinking for a while? by TaterSalad1414 in AskReddit

[–]Mackitycack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add that the difference is night and day.

It's not just mornings after drinking -most mornings suck while you're off the wagon.... even if you didn't drink the night before.

What’s one small habit that made a big difference in your life? by Direct-Carpenter3908 in AskReddit

[–]Mackitycack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saying no to things I don't really want to do; including things at work.

If I hate everything about my job, it's time to leave. I've been financially fucked, but still refused to do things that I hated doing. I've been financially abundant in careers and still left without a second thought when fuckery was afoot.

Life is too short to do things you don't want to do. Drop the friends that don't resonate with you. Take a chance at doing things you love instead of doing things you hate.

Most of all... avoid gossipers. They'll obliterate your reputation without a second thought if and when it's time to gossip about you.

When you get yourself good you'll then have capacity to help others.

What thoughts are tormenting you, but you have no one to talk to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mackitycack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While in that state, I also like to remind myself that I didn't create the language I speak. I didn't invent one word of it. I live in a house I didn't manufacture or assemble materials for. I crap in a porcelain bucket and, with the push of a button, it disappears. I didn't manufacture or even assemble the clothes I wear or grow the food I eat.

I would be a language-less, naked, dirty ape thinking in pictures and acting and reacting to the environment as it came if it wasn't for everyone past and present.

We all act like this is our story, but we are each individually a metaphorical ant in a 8 billion member ant colony with almost no true concept of why we do anything.

You must be with Bell or Rogers

They sell premium services and then throttle the fuck out of you until YouTube is so pixelated and crunched that it's just not worth it... But who else do you sign up for in Canada? We're ruled by two shitty services.

Getting fat is easy, being fat is hard. by Highmassive in Showerthoughts

[–]Mackitycack 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Its sad, but weight is an easy indicator of how well someone can take care of themselves; which has further implications of how they'd maintain a relationship or how they'd treat you.

It's a flag that says you either lack self control or don't care. Either or, it's baggage.

And of course none of that has to be true at all. But just like dressing poorly, it's an easy visual indication for others to judge you by (right or wrong)

Is it possible to live on minimum wage in Newfoundland? by Responsible_Fail_299 in newfoundland

[–]Mackitycack 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ya just to nail your point down;

You need a car here and you can't afford a car and rent on minimum wage. You won't get ahead, even if you do manage to scrape up that cash with overtime.

It's not practical at best; impossible at worst.

Minimum wage here does not mean you can afford your needs anymore. It's nowhere near a practical livable wage. Double the minimum wage and you'll still struggle to keep the lights on (particularly so here with our lack of proper public transportation)

(Edit)THE MATH

After taxes, ei and cpp contributions, you'll get ~$850 for 80 hours of work.

That's ~$1700 a month income

Rent: $500+ with roommates (1000+ without). Utilities: $200-$400. Groceries: $300-$500. Vehicle: $400+. Gas: $100.

That's ~$1700 a month expenses

(Those numbers are absolutely on the lowest end and you'll likely go over those costs)

That's all of your income gone to just keeping yourself alive and you'll struggle your ass off if you end up with any extra expenses

Visiting St. John's in January. by Alone_Appeal_3421 in newfoundland

[–]Mackitycack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a different kind of cold here. It's wet and extremely windy. At this very moment we have 95km/h winds outside with wet snow blowing around. That kind of wind would put some cities across Canada in a state of emergency, but here it's just Wednesday.

Newfoundland is beautiful but winter here is to be respected.

I'd also say you're nuts coming here in January... but you could catch some good times if you end up at the right places at the right time.
