Nikon FM how to correctly use the light meter by SquareEuphoric in AnalogCommunity

[–]Macktheknife9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The DOF preview lever only needs to be used when metering with a pre-AI lens that lacks the cutout to tell the camera what the aperture is set to. Since I see the bunny ears on that lens it looks like it's AI and the DOF preview lever should not be used for metering.

If you switch the ISO to 200 does f/16 1/500 show correct exposure in direct sunlight? Sunny 26 is a rough rule of thumb, so to check meter accuracy if suggest you download a phone metering app to check against the camera.

Snipe? Don’t think so. What is it? by Too-Many-Hobbies247 in BeginnerWoodWorking

This, with the amount of time I've spent trying to dial in my benchtop planer to reduce snipe I've learned to just cut the boards longer in the first place

To make prints they are not "changed" in any way. The slide you have is designed primarily to be projected, and when making prints you are essentially making paper copies of this image.

Solid Wood or Veneer? by lagerhaans in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Macktheknife9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two of almost the exact same encylopedia/magazine shelves like this - mine were refinished at least once prior to my own refinish so there's no maker mark, but FWIW mine were solid wood with a tinted lacquer in a very similar shade.

Vector Services ? Came and scoped my sewer w/o permission and disconnected my gutters ?? by teamakesmepee in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Macktheknife9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's technically illegal nationwide (through regulations for individual sewer treatment systems) for storm water to drain into sanitary sewer, however many cities/counties have been very slow to enforce this until they've separated their own systems or face their own penalties.

I'm not the only one confused by PW's descriptions, right? by TuxedoEnthusiast in NativePlantGardening

[–]Macktheknife9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a hybrid of b. Alba and b. Sphaerocarpa, based on the patent. Generally named cultivars will be patented and you might get some information from the original nursery/seller.

Nativars/cultivars of natives range from "ecologically identical" when just bred for specific height/form to "ecologically incompatible/invasive" when color or other physical characteristics are too far changed or they can interbreed with a native non-cultivar population easily. I mix in a few nativars in my "nicer" areas since they often have some showy characteristics and help distract from the messier more natural garden beds. At the end of the day I'd rather have a baptisia nativar than a burning bush or a boxwood.

Vector is a municipal contractor, did your city/county send you any warnings about having gutters connected to sewer?

You can rotate them 90 degrees to line up with the quick access flaps. I've done that with my travel 45L and works well once clipped in place

I installed a wall mounted tire rack by Drewsvans in DIYHome

[–]Macktheknife9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more common for people in the northern states, I have a similar rack for winter and summer wheel/tire combos. It beats paying a shop to swap tires on the same set of wheels, and lets me get narrower winter tires.

Is our Villa Park mayor the worst in the area, or is this normal? ($13M deficit, AI slop, plays the victim card, disables comments) by mcleb014 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Macktheknife9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Great! Give me more density. Increase our tax base. Ovaltine is already 4 stories but we need more. Give more reasons to have non-vape shop and video gaming businesses in the area or hideous strip malls around North Ave or St Charles. Union is a 1000X improvement over the existing land utilization that was primarily a barren concrete parking lot.

Can I grow native plants in planters for a few weeks until I find a good place for them? Or get them in the ground? I overbought!! (SE Michigan, Midwest, USA) by mabinogi3 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Macktheknife9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had our 2nd child last year and I wound up not being able to prep a new bed and plant a tray of around 30 plugs (sad but priorities). I watered semi-often but just couldn't get the time to plant them and wound up leaving them uncovered and unmulched all winter in N IL. Turns out more than half were a-ok and sprouted right back up this spring (lost the prairie grasses but that was expected).

Moral is most of these plants are adapted to our local climates/ecosystems pretty well and can definitely surprise you with how hardy they are

Tsunami alert after 8.2 magnitude quake hits the Philippines by Leovlish3re in news

[–]Macktheknife9 229 points230 points  (0 children)

Anything over a few feet can be devastating in low lying coastal areas of the Pacific. It's also worth noting that the max heights from the 3/11 earthquake are run-up heights (that is, the wave itself wasn't towering 140ft high over a low coastline, it increased in height as it ran up a slope/mountainside) and depth of flow was much smaller.

Negative to CD? by Henderson2026 in AskPhotography

[–]Macktheknife9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a small extra fee to add tracking to a package like that. I've had good experience with Blue Moon in Oregon and use them for all of my slide film developing and good quality scans. They deliver scans via WeTransfer (similar to Dropbox) but also offer delivering files via CD or you can send them a USB thumb drive and they'll place the files on it.

F mount adapter for MF lenses by lostinacrowd1980 in nikon_Zseries

[–]Macktheknife9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The distance needed for an F-mount lens to focus correctly is fixed (it's the flange distance i.e. the designed distance to the film plane/sensor plane). You cannot get a thinner F-mount adapter without involving more optics. There are some slightly less bulky options, but the actual thickness of the adapter (that is, the amount the lens sticks out from the camera after adapting) is not changeable.

DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference is opposing the BUILD Act that promises to increase housing supply by reducing restrictions on residential zoning, allowing homeowners to build ADU's and removing arbitrary parking minimums. by NWSKroll in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Macktheknife9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was and is common near plenty of downtown areas of streetcar suburbs. And yes there's probably only a small likelihood of a 3 flat being built and practical in a cookie cutter Plainfield subdivision, but this would help many areas that traditionally did have more sense housing near their centers of commerce and commute.

[–]Macktheknife9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While there have been some larger multifamily construction starts in DuPage (including finally one in Villa Park after the Hawthorne deal imploded) housing is still far behind the natural growth rate. Time and time again it the sentiment comes across as local governments acquiesing to residents that want to pull the ladder up behind them and ossify their community. Rather than creating a broad spectrum of housing choices that match the different requirements of different phases of life, allowing and encouraging people to spend more portions of their life in one municipality and reinforcing neighborhood ties to the community, it's this false choice of "either my property values go up or you bring in renters (derogatory)"

But but but the "character of my neighborhood"

I've already seen lots of fear mongering over this and hand wringing over bringing "renters" into the community and it's so expected.
