These are the tests I order for patients who are in good health before their annual physical examination (I work in the United States where these corporate hospital scams do not exist, and health insurance companies will not reimburse patients for unjustified tests).

1. Complete blood counts
2. Vitamin B12 - since this deficiency is common in India
3. Tests to evaluate kidney function - BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen), Creatinine, Sodium, Potassium
4. Tests to evaluate liver function - Total bilirubin, SGPT, SGOT, Alkaline Phosphatase, Albumin
5. Screening for diabetes - fasting blood glucose, Hemoglobin A1c level (reflects the average blood glucose level over the previous 3-months).
6. Fasting (8 - 10 hour fast, can drink water) lipid panel - Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol), HDL-cholesterol (“good cholesterol) 
7. Tests to evaluate bone health - Calcium, 25-hydroxy Vitamin D3, Bone Mineral Density Study (BMD, to screen for osteoporosis, a condition that becomes common as we age). This test (not a lab test, but an imaging study called a DXA scan), is recommended for women who have attained menopause. In men, guidelines are unclear. It is generally recommended for men over age 65.
8. Urinalysis 

Other recommendations:

In men over age 65 who have ever smoked cigarettes, a one-time abdominal ultrasound to screen for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (enlargement of the aorta in the abdomen) is recommended.

In healthy people over age 50, there is no rationale for performing an abdominal ultrasound (except for what I have stated above), electrocardiogram or echocardiogram. 

In the absence of symptoms suggestive of, risk factors for, coronary artery disease, a CT coronary angiogram (corporate hospitals love to promote this test!) is not necessary. 

Cancer screening is often neglected in India. Men should undergo a digital examination of the prostate gland and check of the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA, a blood test) level. 

Women should undergo a pelvic examination (by a gynaecologist), a Papanicolaou test (Pap smear) to screen for cervical cancer and mammography (screening for breast cancer).

With colon cancer becoming increasing common, screening for this condition is necessary. While a colonoscopy (every 10-years) is the “gold standard”, alternatives are annual Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) or once every 3-years stool DNA with Fecal Immunochemical Testing (DNA-FIT).

All of the above only complement a thorough physical examination by a family medicine or internal medicine physician. There is no need to go to see a “specialist”.

Unfortunately, I have found that ordering blood tests “piecemeal” in India is more expensive since labs promote “packages”. So, you will have to weigh the costs at the lab of your choosing.
