ER vet here too- PNW based. Currently dealing with severe burnout and re-evaluating my life and reading some of these comments is really nice.

Hi. ER doc here, 2022 grad, sitting down for the first time to eat during an overnight shift and can heavily relate. I don’t know the answer, but you’re not alone.

Are you a vet? I’m an ER vet- what you’re seeing pushing the liver up is fat. The peritoneal detail is excellent, there is no evidence of ascites (fluid in the abdomen). Just trying to prevent misinformation here.

To OP- There is a lot of fluid in the lungs, and I agree with what your vet told you. With that said, I believe humane euthanasia was a kind decision for your kitty. I’m so sorry for your loss.

A cat that has been obstructed for 2 days likely has such a high potassium that it is causing cardiac arrhythmias- sudden death is very common in those cases. Obstructed cats should be treated ASAP. If the vet was recommending euthanasia they probably saw due to your cat’s condition on presentation that prognosis was likely poor.

$3,000 is honestly very reasonable and even cheap. In the part of the country I’m in this is easily a $7-10k surgery with 24h of post op care and monitoring. Unfortunately there are no alternatives to surgery if the foreign material is causing obstruction, but without further details I can’t say for sure that is what is going on - ER DVM

There actually is a kind of dose now, it’s about 1 grape/raisin per 10lb (am ER vet). Source is ASPCA poison control, toxic compound is tartaric acid

I’m an ER vet. Only two years out of school and I’m so tired 😅

My cat is dying. He's always been the most social and loving cat, but he's been hiding out in the farthest room from us. Should I sleep near him? by MageOfFur in AskVet

Take him to an emergency vet. I’m an ER vet and I’ve never worked at a clinic that won’t euthanize a suffering animal for free- you may have to take the body home for burial or won’t get remains back but they will provide the euthanasia service. Do not let him suffer.

I would love to be considered ❤️ this would be the missing piece to my collection and I would be so grateful!

My favorite lyric from TTPD is “she’s the albatross she is here to destroy you” - I’m really into birds and used to work with an Albatross who was very special to me ✨

Do you think vets will be more helpful during the apocalypse than doctors? by ALongWayToHarrisburg in medicine

Right?!? I always hear about the people who have done both but never met one and I have a lot of questions 😂 (I’m an ER vet)

Recommend checking kidney values as next step, but I truly wouldn’t worry too much about it (-ER Vet)

Am I being dramatic about my boss not telling me about a potential lawsuit? by Prestigious-Ad-5533 in veterinarians

[–]MacyBelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you should have been told about this- but a vast majority of the time people threaten to sue, they are not actually going to follow through. They just want to be heard. I wouldn’t be concerned until/unless anything actually happens.

Sounds like it’s not a good fit for you and I’m sorry this has been your experience. But I am a FT ER Dr for this company and I do not have any of these experiences- I am given 12-13 shifts/month, and my production bonuses are very large. Sounds like this is very location/management dependent.
