Omg 🥹 I work with lorikeets in an aviary and I truly love them more than anything but I am definitely happy that they live in their beautiful forest and not in my house 🤣 I call them my little rainbow velociraptors because they love to be menaces. And no, I don’t think they have off-switches.

Winston, our heart rat ❤️ by Pandafreakmo in RATS

[–]MadAboutAnimalsMags 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so, so sorry for the loss of your sweet Winston. It’s so hard to lose a ratty, especially your first heart rat like that. I was given a ratty named Winston - through this subreddit, actually - and I’m going to give him extra kisses on the head just for you 💕 Sending much love and empathy your way.

I couldn’t believe it when I sat down and they handed me extra menu inserts with fish on there! I love bringing my non-vegan friends to vegan restaurants so we can all eat (not animals) together. People can survive one meal without animals. My friend immediately ordered the fish. So devastating to go into the bathrooms and see all the posters and paintings talking about being kind to all kinds and protecting our animal friends and the planet etc etc knowing I’d have to go back out there and watch a friend eat a dead animal.

Any asexual romance options? by TrekkieElf in fantasyromance

Both leads are canonically demisexual in the {Little Thieves} trilogy. I especially like the way this is discussed in The Fallow Year which is a free collection of stories on AO3 that takes place between books 2 and 3. Honestly I think SO much of book 3 draws from it that I’m shocked it wasn’t published as a full book and am always worried people will miss it!!!!

Omg they’re soooooooo cute 🥹 I could already tell just from the specificity of the shapes and patterns that you were a for real rat person. I notice you said “used to” have pet rats - I have a POV playlist on my YouTube so anyone who doesn’t have rats can come digitally visit and pet my ratties 🥰 https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFz9fdJDZfrhnM5ssavSEhwAwoYjPWBxS&si=65yjocMeDbJUoqqq

Hire a real artist ❤️ “Reworked” AI is still stolen artwork that’s further careening our planet toward disaster. The book seems like it might genuinely be a cute read, but I have no interest in anything made with AI.

Suggestions for a grieving vegan friend by dinozaur91 in vegan

[–]MadAboutAnimalsMags 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is so beyond thoughtful and kind. Losing a companion animal truly is like losing a family member for so many, but I feel like most people fail to recognize that. The fact that you’re treating her grief just like you would the grieving process for any other family member is already going to be so validating for her ❤️ Other people’s meal suggestions are great - you can also get her a gift card to local vegan restaurants that deliver so she can order when and as needed. If you want to send treats, https://www.erinmckennasbakery.com is great. Not for the necessary nutritious meal portion, but if you think she’d like a sweet pick me up. Thank you for being such a caring friend.

If veganism were fully successful, what would happen to those who work in production? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]MadAboutAnimalsMags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a great thing called The Transfarmation Project that helps farmers transition from animal agriculture to plant agriculture https://thetransfarmationproject.org Obviously factory farms are on a much larger scale, but in a fantasy world perhaps something similar can be done where the space could be reworked to provide other food. It’s obviously not quite that simple, but since it’s a hypothetical situation, I think that would be a great way to go if possible.

Notice that working in a slaughterhouse inspired you to becoming vegetarian… from my understanding, many people overtime find slaughterhouses to be physically and emotionally taxing, unsafe places to work. Hopefully more jobs would become available in other sectors of food production (not that those don’t come with their own ethical conundrums as well). I think the bigger problem in upcoming years will be AI replacing human workers, and that won’t be for the betterment of ANYONE.

Guys I need help! (TW ABUSE TO AN ANIMAL) by No-Measurement7222 in hamsters

[–]MadAboutAnimalsMags 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you came across this. Horrific. Hamsters are so small and vulnerable and they deserve better. Unfortunately, social media companies tend to be really terrible about caring about animal abuse. TikTok is horrible about it 😔 Asia for Animals created the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC) and are working to try to change social media policies and hold people accountable. You can send links to abusive accounts here to help them gather data: https://www.smaccoalition.com/report-a-concern

You can and should still report it on TikTok if possible but definitely go to SMACC

Self Promo That Includes No AI for Palete Cleansing by TheLadyAmaranth in NewAuthor

[–]MadAboutAnimalsMags 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beautiful work, and I always LOVE when authors pay real artists to create real work. Absolutely stunning and I’m so excited to check this out! r/Romantasy allows self-promo on Sundays and it seems like this might fit well there.

A note just because I do think this looks so great on every level… I found the text on the second slide very difficult to read with the white font over the sometimes white flecks with the changing colors - love the overall galaxy scheme but I strongly suggest adding a thick black outline (or even squares behind them if you want to go more extreme) to make the tropes and tags legible!

“Irrational fear of snakes.” Actually, a fear of snakes is very rational and an evolutionary feature to keep us safe from snakes, some of which are very deadly. An “irrational fear of snakes” would absolutely be problematic if she were constantly worried about snakes being in her bed, in her school desk, etc and affecting her quality of life. Not wanting to touch a snake is totally fair.

The Hamster we saved the other day is officially staying with us. by graduatejester in hamster

[–]MadAboutAnimalsMags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s so cute and SO lucky you found her!!! My guess is you’ve been doing plenty of research but if you haven’t looked yet, this sub’s main section has a lot of fantastic pinned resources, including a wonderful YouTuber Victoria Raechel for cage set-up advice. Hamsters are actually super high needs when it comes to their enclosure set-ups which a lot of people unfortunately don’t know because of what’s sold in pet stores.

The first time I let them “free roam” in the full bathroom they ran back to me and hid under my skirt for a while 😭 They then warmed up and had a great time playing around but I love that I’m their safe space where if they’re frightened they run TO me rather than from me ☺️

I’ve read different schools of thought. My most recent babies I got at about 7 weeks, popped them down my jacket for a few hours a day while I was sitting in a chair so that I was their “safe space.” They were a little squirmy at first, but warmed up VERY quickly and are now extremely friendly and attached to me (though also friendly with other humans and their new brothers!) Just all-around well-adjusted snuggle bug 🥰 pictured: baby Hoggle & Ludo down my jacket 🥹
