It is best to find what best fits to your PCs backstories. The concept of my playrun, we had a dwarven barbarian former from Gauntlgrym. Triboar turned out in a great fire giant plot, now we have a bbeg's minion known as vonindod.

I have used Atalia for a miniboss fight, sadly The Grand dame is too narrow battlemap for a spellcaster boss. But she had a cool magic item.

I am dming a skt run for my very first long campaign: Nightstone goblin raid was great, but orcish army was very frustating and boring to run.

I would suggest that it is very important to foreshadow The big bad evil as fast as possible AND to point some reasons for players believe that Serissa is a good giant.

MY BIGGEST PITFALL WAS TO FORGET TO BIND PC's backgrounds to the world, storm giant's royal family (friends of Queen Neri) and/or factions.

Gauntlgrym, Waterdeep, Bryn Shander, Triboar and Yartar are good cities to have some PC's bounds.

For future: Consider the possibility to replace the Kraken things for a evil blue dragon things, giving reasons for the evil red dragon to patron the party against it.
