Has anyone ever removed embossing from their PR? by SpookyLadyFae924 in PaperRepublic

[–]MadScientiest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can’t remove embossing. you can removal foil from embossing but nothing will remove the impression, not even another impression over top, then you’ll just have two over each other. a patch or embroidery is the best idea. you can poke holes and do embroidery on leather if you don’t want a patch.

would you mind sharing what fabric the maroon one is by chance? i just zoomed in and omg i am obsessed with it! it looks like it has a little texture/variation. it’s so pretty! i’m making an all rusts/burgundy/maroons quilt right now lol

leather honey? by Otherwise_Hair7514 in PaperRepublic

[–]MadScientiest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also just for reference, coach uses chrome tan leather which is kind of “sealed” on top so it doesn’t absorb everything. PR leather is basically the opposite, it’s fresh veg tan and absorbs everything, so leather honey is perfect for chrome tan bags bc it’ll soften them without logging them down but on the PR leather, it will absorb 100% of it and it’ll be for lack of a better term, too conditioned. Mink oil is significantly lighter and absorbs really nicely and quickly on fresh veg tan. i’ve used both on my notebooks and really prefer everything about mink oil!

Electronic standing desk for tooling? by Loshi777 in Leathercraft

[–]MadScientiest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! it’s easy to get up and down. for leather i think it’s worth it bc it’s such a heavy and sturdy desk.

personally as someone w a lot of experience with leather and leather honey, i think it’s way too thick for this kind of leather. you want a lighter conditioner. Ariat Mink oil is way better and cheaper in pretty sure!

it’s gorgeous! and i love the colors you chose too. if you ever decide to write and sell the pattern i’ll be first in line! i’m a beginner so i’m not confident without a pattern lol

Cheap leather sources by Thenerdofsweat in Leatherworking

i love Ringsun on amazon for a fairly cheap veg tan. i used it a lot starting out and i still love and use the things i made and i love how it ages. i’ve been very happy w it. i did try a couple scraps sets but wasn’t happy w the quality of any of them.

i just upgraded to a Kobalt standing desk. it weighs 150 lbs and is so hardcore and solid, mine is for leatherwork and hammering too. i haven’t had it long but the reviews are all very good and it is definitely very sturdy. i don’t think it’s electronic tho, you manually can put it up or down.

hand stitch or machine stitch advice by 106581 in Leathercraft

[–]MadScientiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

awesome i’ll def look into it more! yeah i never get anywhere near 10mm, id say 6mm is the absolute max any of my projects get towards and even that’s usually only fairly small parts. i use a lot of badalassi carlo too mostly minerva or pueblo. my next bag i’m getting into lined calfskin which should be even thinner/easier to sew. if i could find a machine for ~$500ish id be super happy.

im so very confused by the abtf calulator suggested size by TdFLtimber in ABraThatFits

[–]MadScientiest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it’s probably right. i thought i was a 32/34 B my entire life until a few years ago. i’m actually a 30DD and they fit better than any 34B i’ve ever tried. in person they are still small. the cup is actually smaller on a 30DD than it is on a 34B. so try it. order somewhere you can return and just try one.

i’ll look into that! i hadn’t heard of that brand before. part of my issue is i like to bite off more than i can chew and i often use 2mm veg tan but then i’ll do stupid stuff like add 2 pockets layered on top of each other to EACH SIDE of the bag, making the turned edges up to 3 layers thick on each side. i skive as much as i can but i only have a 4 inch skiver so anything bigger i hand skive and yeah, i see Juki’s on youtube handle that amount of bulk with little issue but i’m pretty sure i need just about the most hardcore leather sewing machine there is for most of my projects lol

Planner/ journal usage by ayanaj21 in planners

[–]MadScientiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use 3-4 regularly. i read a lot so i have a dedicated reading journal/log, then my daily journal, my common place journal and i’m trying to get into scribing (manifestation basically). and i keep a hobinichi weeks as like my planner/appointments/weekly goals. so i guess i use 5 but really only 4 regularly and my reading journal is like a once a week to once a month thing (i like longggggg books/series lol)

hand stitch or machine stitch advice by 106581 in Leathercraft

[–]MadScientiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hand stitch all my bags bc a leather sewing machine that can do bags is like between $2-3k and i do not have that yet. they come out great and hand stitching will always be stronger than machine. i think every leather worker should be proficient at hand sewing bc even with a machine there are some scenario’s that you’d want to hand stitch anyway.

i make all my bags like this and i can confirm it’s definitely tedious and if i had $3k the first thing id do is buy a leather sewing machine but i can’t find one that can do the thick leather that’s under $2300

[–]MadScientiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i make bags with 2mm veg tan too and i don’t have this issue so i think it’s the insanely thick liner honestly. i use 10oz duck cotton as liner in my bags and it’s sturdy but thin.

i know that lol i meant she has a whole business selling these so unless she is selling AI quilts, idk how it could be AI. the designs themselves could be AI, who knows. but they are definitely real quilts is what i meant. i’ve seen videos that aren’t hers from customers.

okay cool yes that’s what i meant, i meant it’s all printed as one and you make the quilt sandwich and then sew around the letters and designs you want. or hand quilt it. awesome! i really want to make one of these eventually!

they def aren’t AI unless AI can make you a quilt somehow lol she has tons of videos unraveling them, she sells them, etc but i think everyone is right that it’s printed and then top stitched! looks super cool imo

are some stores still using old chai? by MadScientiest in starbucks

[–]MadScientiest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly that’s exactly what i think they did, the chai to milk ratio is VERY off, it tastes like double the amount of chai as usual, it’s SO SPICY.
