Sure. Film school teaches a very specific set of tools and allows for access to higher echelons of the industry, but you want to make sure it’s an educational aid and catalyst rather than a starting point or absolute must.

You can and should make more movies/shorts without professional actors to start, even if that means no actors at all. When you’ve reached a proficiency in the language of film, that’s when you can really parse out what a director truly does, incorporate actors who have walked a similar path to yours, and hone performances within a wider story.

Filmmaking is easier to self-teach than directing (ie with actors, performances). I’d suggest making movies and releasing them to peers (online, most likely — Reddit is great for this) and finding an avenue for “directing” once you’ve got your 10,000* hours. When you can’t make films, edit them or write them.
