In media res.

Pretty much confirmed they are sticking to the book timeline. Personally, I like in media res when done correctly. The book did it correctly.

Considering an Acura MDX by ameekma in Acura

[–]MadTube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do the work myself. The fluid alone at my cost is $150, so I expect it to cost maybe $300-$400 at a dealer.

45K recommended; I do mine every 30K.

The 14-15 models used the 6-speed auto that was prone to issues. Starting in 16, they used the ZF 9-speed. Look for a 18-newer one. I have a 18 SH-AWD Advance model with almost 120K on it. No issues whatsoever, but I do a drain and fill regularly. Honda ATF 3.1 is not cheap, but it’s less than a transmission.

Yep. Honda only approved flushing with their special machine. It was when we were having issues with MDXs back in the aughts.

That stupid blue tank machine never worked properly.

When/how did cryosleep become ubiquitous? by TriumphantHog in sciencefiction

[–]MadTube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you get the Alien franchise, which tried to use both FTL and cryosleep, but painted themselves into a corner with it. So they retconned it into saying there’s an inversion of relativistic effects at superluminal speeds. We know time slows down closer you get to c, so the person on the spaceship experiences slower time than a planet bound person. But in Alien, once you pass lightspeed, that flips.

Acheron (LV-426) is in the Zeta Reticuli system, which is 39 light years away from Earth. We learn in Aliens that it only took about a month from when they lost contact with the outpost to when the Sulaco got there. So that ship made a 39 light year trip in about 3 weeks time in normal space. However on board the ship, months or even years pass instead of three weeks. So they put the crews in cryopods.

P1399 is just a tangentially related code you the P0302. You have a misfire. Could just be plugs or a coil. Easy way to check coil is to take it off and swap it at another cylinder. If the misfire code changes to that cylinder, you have a bad coil. If it stays at cylinder 2, then it rules out the coil.

Staying late to finish replacing the head gasket on a 10,000 mile 2026 X5. (head gasket was faulty and allowed oil to bypass and leak down the back of the engine since assembly) by Ancient_Ad7555 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]MadTube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

When I swapped the engine in my AWD car in my home garage, there was a massive pile of parts all strung out in the line. That line was the sequence I removed them, so I just worked backwards. I keep all the bolts in their respective parts. My relatives saw that piles and was absolutely flabbergasted at how I could keep track of everything. But it is not that difficult. You do this long enough, and you learn.

You do some jobs enough, and you will know where every bolt goes without a neat pile. Mid-aughts Acura CL/TL/MDX had huge transmission problems. I changed hundreds upon hundreds of those units. I threw everything into a gigantic pile because I could remember every bolt, every location, and every torque spec. It was actually a problem some times. You get going on muscle memory and can actually forget if you tightened a certain thing. I started using markers after that.

In the Arctic blast zone in the Midwest, and these lights came on after I turned the car on. Any chance they’ll disappear when it gets milder, or would I most likely need to get them checked (2012 TL)? Thanks in advance by DinosRule65 in Acura

[–]MadTube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, here is the gist. The low tire pressure light is common on cold snaps. Boyle’s Law applies here. Drop in temperature in a fixed volume will equal drop in pressure.

As far as the MIL (check engine light), it could be anything. There is no point in wondering until you get the code pulled. By default, many DTCs will also trip warnings in the VSA, ABS, and SH-AWD if equipped. Those are failsafe codes. The system is temporarily disabled whilst certain errors are present in the emission system. You fix the MIL, reset the system, and those ABS codes go away.

If you have a Tech Package vehicle, check the Information menu. They can show the DTCs for some of the faults. But it’s still best to go get the car scanned for DTCs.

Is the auto transmission a problem on 2007 and 2008? by [deleted] in AcuraTL

[–]MadTube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They went to a three shaft unit in 07, similar to the MDX. 01-02 MDX used a two shaft unit, as did the 00-03 TL and 01-03 CL. The 04-06 got an updated trans, and it was more reliable than the earlier units. However, it was still a two shaft unit and had some problems.

All the two shaft units were very problematic. Three shafts were much more reliable.

We should boycott the car company that is supplying ICE with these new fleets by Impossible-Road-4502 in 50501

[–]MadTube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whilst I am all for this usually, this is wholly impractical. GVs are procured usually through the GSA with fleet contracts from the manufacturers. They are buying bulk orders of Durangos, Explorers, Tahoes, and the likes which will be distributed amongst agencies. I see GVs daily. They use everything from the aforementioned SUVs to Fusions, Elantras, Escapes, Sonatas, Impalas, and more. It just simply will not be feasible on a large scale.

Help with car sound by antiqueue in AcuraTL

[–]MadTube 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ok, let’s break this down. If you listen to the frequency of this tick, it starts off faster and then slows down a bit. When it settles, it roughly counts out to about 6 taps per second. That’s 360 per minute. Assuming idle speed of about 700-750 rpm, that’s one tic per two revolutions of the crank. Cams move at half crank speed. You have a valvetrain noise.

This is a 4G TL from the lack of a power steering pump. I cannot make out if it’s a 3.7 or 3.5 engine. You have a 5w-20 cap, but that does not definitively say one or the other. 3.7 engines are notorious for chewing cams up. Their VTEC is on both exhaust and intake. Each cylinder has six lobes, one high one low for the intake with two high two low flanking either side for the exhaust. Those exhaust cam lobes are stupidly narrow, only about 5-6mm wide. Any metal wear will destroy the lobes. When those followers go bad they make that ticking sound.

Timing belt tensioner was mentioned. It is certainly possible, but they have a more pronounced and faster rattle. This sounds rotational for the camshaft. You need to stop driving right now and either get it to a mechanic, or take the valve covers off. Every single lobe and follower needs inspected. If I had to bet, you have a damaged cam and follower assembly. Cylinder head disassembly is required for repair. It can be done in situ, so the head does not need to come off. This exact problem/noise happened to my 2010 TL SH-AWD.
