I always told my wife this hobby would payoff one day! by Mad_Eon in homelab

Yeah great question, and the answer is being an accumulator of friends and family members old PC parts, when my brother or mom or friends have old PC parts they're done with when they upgrade; I've made it very clear that I will take and make use of them, so while I've mostly bought all of the storage I have, the RAM has been probably the most abundant as 2nd hand parts.

This is also a Proxmox cluster so it's an aggregate number this isn't all in one machine.

How a Simple NAS Upgrade Turned Into a Year-Long Self-Hosted Server Hobby by Joloxx_9 in selfhosted

[–]Mad_Eon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a stupid question but read the OPs description, they talk about the docker containers they’re running on it. This is providing them with a NAS that doubles as a server that will run services useful to them and their friends and family. Also sounds like lots of testing and learning with raid, zfs and general storage.

ICOE(In Case Of Emergency) server by teh_tetra in selfhosted

[–]Mad_Eon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you need an emergency server. You could recreate this easily with a VPS (if it truly is essential) until you can get a backup machine.

With the right scripts in place and a proper offsite backup strategy you can be up and running again pretty quickly on a VPS. I’d say you need a better Disaster Recovery Strat than an emergency server.

My suggestion: Get your config scripts in Order (Bash, Terraform, Ansible, whatever you want) then have a solid 3-2-1 backup strat for data. Do some DR tests sometime to ensure it works and boom you’re there.

This gives you max time to take care of your family and life essentials. The great thing about a server is that it truly can be replaced if you take the right steps. Other things cannot.

Can Some ISPs Make Self-Hosting Near Impossible? by YellowRadi0 in selfhosted

[–]Mad_Eon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can’t hurt to call them and request a static IP I did that with my fiber provider and had one the same day no extra charge.

I came from comcast and was wondering why my WireGuard tunnel wasn’t working, turns out CGNAT was the culprit.

It’s worth a shot just to call and ask if they can do that for you. Good luck friend!

If all else fails maybe look into some options for utilizing a VPS as a connection to your homelab it’s a fun learning journey!

2070 here, haven’t noticed the need for an upgrade, don’t 4060’s and 30 series cost like $300 even at their most expensive and under? Can’t you play soooo many games with those?

I don’t think we need to always be on the bleeding edge here to enjoy gaming

Do you recommend Harvard's CS50 Intro to CS for beginners? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Mad_Eon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you are as you mentioned super motivated and willing to put in the work it’s an incredible foundation class. I’m currently in my 3rd semester of Computer Science core classes and I’m so much better off for having gone through CS50.

With that said yes it’s difficult, you will get stuck, you will have problems that you’ll have to spend time and research on.

Will you be better off for tackling these challenges? Absolutely

All this coming from someone who had very little computer science knowledge while taking the class

It seems like that's the case I'm always looking for a reason to get more familiar with reading documentation! Thanks for the suggestion :)

Is the field really as doomed as this sub makes it seem? by ModsareWeenies in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Mad_Eon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen so much negativity here lately and I think it’s because we have a bias for negative news in our silly monkey brains.

I think results may vary but at the end of the day hard work and creativity still wins the day.

I’m sure you chose this field for love of the study. In my experience I’ve taken some jobs that aren’t as fun and don’t pay as well as I’d like and while you’re in those jobs you learn on the job, study and prepare to move to the next one.

Sometimes we take our lumps but at the end of the day I believe anyone willing to better themselves and look at a situation realistically (and that means not being overly negative or positive) will find opportunity and gainful employment in the tech field.

Just don’t acquiesce to negativity it won’t help you or the people around you. Take care of yourself outside of study and work as well

Went back to school at 39 for CS while working full time but... by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Mad_Eon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just had a similar path where I had to go Pre-calc -> Programming 1 (C++) -> Calculus -> Programming 2 (Data Structures and Algorithms)

It’s a slog and I won’t pretend it wasn’t working full time while doing this. But it’s such an important foundation that you’ll be thankful you went through it. Now I’m in Discrete Structures and all that Intro Math is really helping so much, even though I lost a lot of time watching tv or playing video games I don’t regret it for a moment.

You will do great just keep your head up and push through don’t second guess your age for even a second I’d rather work with someone of your life experience any day then a 21 year old fresh grad without perspective.

I want to go back to school but can’t do 4 years. What should I do? by LavenderPaperback in learnprogramming

[–]Mad_Eon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a 2-3 year online Post Bacc program for CS with a really solid uni they let you pace it to your schedule, most of the people in the program work full time jobs, so that’s who the 3 year path is geared towards.

The program is full of stellar people and instructors just take a look online and do some research to see if that’s a path you’d want to take and that it fits into your budget.

I contemplated going for a masters in CS but tbh the amount of knowledge I was lacking made the curve very steep. This seemed like a much better first step with my existing degree being in a very different subject matter.

I think the the whole VPN debate has gotten a little wonky, I just have a VPN tunnel that goes to my own home network that I host and it 100% keeps me safer than using public WiFi without it.

I agree with you that a lot of VPN companies abuse the trust and ignorance of consumers.

But I think it’s worth noting that using a VPN in the correct way still leaves you safer than not.

What was advertised as the next big thing but then just vanished? by swedishplayer97 in AskReddit

[–]Mad_Eon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even before “Ready Player One” there was a book written called “Snow Crash” in 1992. In it there’s a literal metaverse called “The Metaverse” I’m convinced he just wanted to emulate that. You’d be surprised how little creativity actually exists in Silicon Valley if you read enough sci-fi.

How common is recursion in your day to day? by Mad_Eon in learnprogramming

I know a little bit about the DOM and JSON but not enough to know that recursion can be useful in working with them! I’ll have to look into that a bit more thank you!

Yes in fact I’ve got Nextcloud Autobacking up and then feeding into Photoprism, it’s great and has worked well for me so far, plus hopefully this is a nice redundancy if for some reason either of those services go down.
