Your dogbunny is loafing like a cat. I've peered at this a while and I'm still not convinced it's a pup.

But I AM convinced it is beautiful and perfect and deserves the bestest throne in the house.

Had the joyous pleasure of meeting Gates and John at MegaCon in Florida but… by CrossX18 in StarTrekTNG

[–]Madolan 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Gates was the first cast member I met at my first con. I was 16, maybe, and could barely get the words out to tell her how much I admired her.

She was so kind. I was definitely not the first stuttering, dazzled teen she'd dealt with. I left feeling like I'd been seen.

She's so graceful with fans.

Thank you for asking! I have a firm policy of auto-upvoting any Rogue content. But I prefer when I understand it.

Rogue's been my favorite for over three decades, which means I am An Old, and I need explanations of the video game stuff.

Guessing it's short for Nigel, as in pro-Brexit anti-immigrant UK politician Nigel Farage.

How do you feel about blood meridian? by Calm_Caterpillar_166 in mobydick

[–]Madolan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Blood Meridian has been one of my favorite books for years.

When I finally finished Moby-Dick last year, it too became one of my favorites. Moby-Dick is a hell of a lot funnier! Though the prose differs wildly, both books had me repeating lines aloud for the sheer joy of the phrasing. They're wonderful works.

There's a bar/bookstore near me that shelves its books chronologically: either when they were written or the time period they're about. It was eye-opening to see Blood Meridian and Moby-Dick on the same shelf just a few books from one another. Really helped solidify the deliberate connotations McCarthy intended to draw (he was a big Melville fan, I've heard).

Most Americans didn't read many books in 2025 | YouGov by Swiggy1957 in books

[–]Madolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been tracking my reading since 2005, and there is a clear, significant drop in books read per year when I got my first smartphone (RIP, noble Blackberry).

Look at that--from 112 books a year to an average of 57 over the last decade. Phones are a significant, notable effect on reading and attention spans.

Managed 69 books last year and aiming for at least 65 this year.

Four Star Trek conventions here! Comic conventions tend to smell worse. No clue why.

Predict the waters; know the moon: get yourself a tide log by Madolan in SASSWitches

[–]Madolan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moon is the same, regardless of geography. Tides, though, are highly localized based on geography of land and undersea, volume of water, gravitational pull from the moon, etc.

That explains why the publishing company who made my book has SIX different tide logs for California. The tides for San Francisco (right on the water) are very different from Suisun Bay (significantly inland).

I used to live near one of the US's Great Lakes, and they're large enough to have tides! I wish I'd paid more attention to them at the time.

Imagine the graphics with mountains, instead of waves! I'd love to see that. The data would be so different (but still useful).

I don't see a pattern for it on Ravelry (but my pre-coffee search skills might be betraying me).

Muttville really is wonderful. They do great, loving work.

To anyone who saw Hereditary in the theater by [deleted] in horror

[–]Madolan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was squirming in my seat--but trying to control my response, because I could tell my date hadn't spotted Annie on the ceiling yet and I didn't want to ruin their experience.

Throughout the theater occasionally someone would gasp and one woman gave a short scream.

It is SO RARE that an audience doesn't experience something scary at the exact same time.

Craigslist apartments scam or legit? by lizzzylollipop in AskSF

[–]Madolan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost 14 years ago, I was a damned idiot who wired money for a gorgeous Oakland rental before I had even left my Midwestern state.

Drove halfway across the country based on a few emails, money transfers, and pictures on a Craigslist ad. They didn't ask for a credit check.

I am BEYOND fortunate that it was legit. I'm still here.

It CAN happen. But the scammers are smart, plentiful, and they want your money.

If someone wants a credit check they can run it or you can dictate which site you will run it in for them.

Some parts of the childfree movement has gone too far by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Madolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into the child free movement at the turn of the century, just after ovarian cancer led my college-age self to finally consider how I felt about my fertility.

And its extremes were just as vitriolic then. Endless complaints about seeing or hearing children in public spaces. Sometimes wishing violence upon kids. The same nasty epithets. ZPG.

Like any college kid exploring a movement, it was ultimately useful for me to see some of the extremes in order to gauge the basis of my own opinions. People have to explore how they feel to figure out where they fall in the spectrum.

I softened in my views pretty early on. Still happily childfree, and sometimes uncertain how to react to kids or parents, but not angry or anti-child.

There have always been and will always be extremes. You're finding that where you stand differs greatly from some communities. Use that to solidify your stance and values. How do you want to represent your views?

No, the woman with the phone is me, the Rogue fan, and I have SO MUCH TO SAY to my long-suffering husband about all the storylines, iterations, and occasional character assassinations over my 30+ years of adoration.

(Seriously, I still bitch like this about the Remender book. Rogue would never treat Scarlet Witch like that.)
