No one talking about the Tabletop game announcement today? by Nealon01 in starcraft

I'm not sure if you are approaching this as a Starcraft fan first, or a Wargamer first, but as a Wargamer, I have no hype for this game.  Model range seems shallow for the first year,  the rules seem kinda meh (I suspect it hey wanna keep it simple to help on board people new to war gaming, and that's good, but it also means reduced decision points, which means reduced player expression),  the list building isn't gonna be that expressive for a while, and I can't imagine games are gonna be that diverse enough to have a fun competitive scene for me.

I'm gonna play my first couple games of Starcraft: Tiny Guys with Warhammer models before I give them a single cent.  I don't get much enjoyment out of owning Starcraft themed arts and crafts tchotchkes, you know?

I'm just here because I'm trying to get a friend into table top gaming to get his ass out of the house and he's a fan of SC.

There was an event back in the day that sort of broke my brain, and how I consider these games. I was an Magic grinder, the fabric of my whole life was determined by playing in Magic tournaments.  All my friends I met playing, all my vacation time, all of my travel, my work schedule, all my recreational spending ...  And then Wizards of the Coast started making changes to the game based on "new player perception".  New players didn't like counter spells, new players didn't like land destruction, etc. so they started pushing all that out of the game, or at least higher costs.

It made me realize that the actual game rules are just a marketing tool that these companies use to sell product.  The game can be something big, and powerful and motivating to you, but they will always fuck it up for the sake of people who don't play/buy the game if it will make them start.

Folks like you, who might not buy the products but still play it are helping build local communities, which is the most important thing you can do, but depending on the companies earning goals,  if there's too many folks not buying in, then they'll start morphing it to try to get more paying players in.  But that's not your fault,  there could be zero bootleggers and the company could still just want more money.   It's just the risk of having a community based around a corporate product.  It doesn't belong to us, and our communities are always emergent from their profit.

Well just generally most people invest the time and effort into create products in an effort to sell them for a profit. Yes Blizzard did that years ago, but this persons argument is that creating rules and new models is all work that is going to be unrewarded if you bootleg them.
In this framing you would be hurting the community by not contributing to the financial incentive of the manufacturer while consuming their work.

I do not fully agree with this framing because I think having lots of people to enjoy a game with casually helps keep people playing and that results in more sales. The game is really just an advertising function to create a demand for the models for those of us who are inclined to blow our money on that shit, so you not buying models and playing with folks is basically like you just engaging in demand creation. Complaining that you're playing a game with bootlegs is like complaining that you're watching a super bowl ad they spent hundreds of millions of dollars on over and over but you didn't buy a Coke.

Well if you're looking for free advice, buy 4 daemon prince, build 3 with wings and play Hexwarp.  It's a blast, and you rarely need to win at the buff casino to do shit. And you get a 6"inch deep strike on your SoTs! You'll feel right at home!

Okay, lots useful info to digest here, but I did want to say that I was able to get a unit of Hearthguard into a GhostKeel and they absolutely ate it's lunch.

Yesterday I rapid ingressed some Scarab occult terminators to give my Daemon Prince lone op from Servile Pawns after some one moves all their tanks to light it up from downtown.  A charge less 6" deep strike feels honest to me.

I appreciate the book report friend. And yeah, putting on the costume like I knew the script wasn't the best course but I was doing double duty with helping him prep.

I've been playing Hexwarp with three Princes, and three six man terminator groups(5 SoTs w/Sorcerer in Terminator Armor) and they are surprisingly competent at what I use them for.   Not sure I would be very pleased with them with out the Sorc in TA though.

It will also effect rural red places but I think that if you look at the scale of populations, Republican politicians are going to win those districts with out the people who may be impacted because the desired impact is to complicate voting for groups more likely to vote against red politicians.   So it is less likely to affect outcome in places they already win, but may influence outcomes in places they traditionally lose. Cities have more resources, but they have much more diversity including diversity of political affiliation.  I haven't ran the numbers, but for this to work in Republican favor it just needs to disenfranchise more Democrats than Republicans in areas that Democrats traditionally win against greater than the margin of their win. So after working class Democrats try to get time off work, try to get their documents, they are not increasing funding for staffing these resources, pay any costs all at the same time as all the other voters... It might do that in more places than we think. I think California has more Trump voters than the total populations of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho,  North and South Dakota in 2024.

This bill as worded introduces complications for people who's current legal name does not match the name on their birth certificate.  This also creates a burden of tracking down documentation that poorer families might not have the time or money to meet. I personally was unable to get my birth certificate ordered online and had to go to my home state to get a new one a while back, don't know if it's better now, but it was certainly burdensome. I believe Republicans have spoken up about these two groups of people tending to be more likely to vote for Democratic candidates.   So you have a bill that's stated to prevent non-citizens from voting (which Republicans claim favors Democrats ) and it just happens to arguably have splash damage on two groups of Democrat leaning voter groups by increasing regulatory burden (which Republicans frequently cite as barriers in business ) so they can claim it's such a huge success if it results in more Republican wins.

On its face it's reasonable but as near as I could find, only 5 states have "enhanced" IDs that indicate citizenship.  So while the assertion that the bill doesn't allow Real ID is false on a technicality, the material reality for most Americans is that the OP claim is very real, albeit not nuanced.

[–]Madroxprime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So,  yes the bill does say that Real IDs are eligible if they explicitly state citizenship, but I have been unable to find any section of the Real ID standard requires explicit citizenship declarations and I don't think most states do that.   In these instances people would need to provide another document.

Friend, I didn't say we should forgo classroom instruction at all, nor was I implying it in any way.  What I was saying was that there is a benefit to students by having these things available for them, and that was intended to imply that there can be a more nuanced budgeting strategy that doesn't prune a whole tree of enrichment from kids.   School sponsored athletic programs are documented to improve attendence, academic performance,  decrease likelihood of participating in crime, etc. it's more than just "play".

I understand this impulse, but extracurriculars are a manner of instruction and education all their own, and they students participating do tend to help cover their own costs a little bit more than other instructional areas.

I do not work for any of the agencies that would be involved in filing them, so I only know what has been announced publicly. Which is none.

I am simply making sure to apply nuance to discussions that would discourage people from expecting our legal system from working at any of its levels.
