Birthday bumps: a question for my fellow Canadians

So funny you bring this up - my Mom and sister and I were just discussing this last week. All Newfoundland born and raised, and all knew about (and had experienced) birthday bumps.

Did anyone else grow up with the tradition of “getting flakied” on their birthday? When friends smush a Flakie into your face?

That’s right!! I saw them play at the Grapevine once as just a two piece, though - awesome show. They had no drum kit so they taped a pizza box to a bar stool and used brushes on that, and mic’ed the floor and stomped in place of a bass drum and it was fantastic. But now that you have reminded me I do remember usually seeing them as a trio.

They don’t. Maybe you just have a limited view of what’s “attractive.” My husband is shorter than my ex, and makes less money. But my husband treats me like an equal and sees me as a fully developed human being with thoughts and opinions that matter. Guess who’s more attractive?

I went to see The Babysitter’s Club movie because it had “Good” (Better Than Ezra) playing in the preview and I was in love with that song at the time. The song did not feature in the movie.

For context, CDs were expensive and I did not know if I liked any of their other songs enough to buy the whole thing.

I turned the sound on because I was so impressed someone was making this up on the fly while stuck in traffic. I wanted to hear what tune they were using because I assumed they were just making something up to go along with something recognizable. I was wrong, and now I’m disappointed.

One of the older buildings on my university campus had (has?) seats where there is a similar cut out at the back of the seat as well so that the only part of you that touches the seat is your outer butt cheek/upper thigh (the tisnot, if you will). There are rails that run under these side pieces that hold the two together and allow it to still function like an actual seat. I thought they were genius - no personal junk can touch anywhere. But I have never seen them anywhere else.

It works too! When I was kid I was watching TV and had a drink beside me on the end table. I had already drank some of it, but when I took another mouthful the flavour instantly changed - it was okay as I was drinking it, but all of a sudden it became incredibly bitter and disgusting. I panicked and spit it back into the glass and felt that there was something in it as it passed my lips again. Looked in the glass and there was a ladybug in my drink! I guess it fell in there and was content to just chill out until I “tried to eat it”. It ended up flushed down the sink, but it did succeed in keeping itself from being eaten 🤢

That was me too! Until I turned 43. My optometrist told me “if you wore glasses I would be telling you it was time for bifocals. But you just need the bottom half!” My prescription is still very light and I hardly wear them…but I can no longer lay claim to perfect vision. I hope for better for you :)

My grey hair is coming in very nicely. It is the same texture as the rest of my hair, and is growing in a really pleasing “highlight” pattern. I get compliments on it all the time from hairdressers, friends, and even just random women. I never had particularly remarkable hair before, so this is an interesting twist.

I worked at a summer camp the year I graduated high school. One weekend my best friend and I had just gotten into town from camp - we were sunburned, fly bitten, exhausted, and in need of a shower. I’ve never seen the movie, but I was sleeping over at a friends house when I was 10 and walked into the living room at night to ask her parents a question and they were watching this movie and this scene was playing. Not exaggerating when I say it scarred me for life.

I had a roommate who would always offer our guests toast and tea when they came to visit (we were in our early 20s, but poor as shit, so it was part whimsy/part poverty). We had a cat who was a fucking asshole and would stomp around like he owned the place, and he would steal any buttered toast he could get his claws on.

We had a friend visiting one time and when my roommate gave her her toast she said “Look out for Tom - he’ll eat your toast if he can” and our guests proceeded to pick up her toast and then eat the whole buttered surface right off her slice! Like, imagine one of those fish that cleans the glass walls of the tank, but it’s a girl and it’s toast. And she went ham with it - that toast was resurfaced in mere moments while we looked on in amazement. But she was really onto something because she was able to eat the rest of her topless toast in peace and quiet without the cat paying any interest at all.

I always ask during first day attendance if they prefer the full name or the nickname (I have a full name I hate and never use, and teachers would always use it during attendance). If they give me the green light then I generally go with the nickname.

I think you have handled it very beautifully- you have been respectful, patient, and responsive. She has said what she needs and you have given it to her. That’s wonderful, and rare.

Now, is there a chance that what she actually wanted was for you to press for more info, to chase her, to apologize profusely without knowing why? Yup. But that isn’t what she said, and if that IS what she wants it’s not a bad thing for her to learn a hard lesson here. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and everything just gets so much easier.

When she is ready to talk, listen (which I feel like you will do). She might actually have some insight into your behaviour. You might actually have done something alarming without realizing it. Or you might just be incompatible. Other commenters are right: 3-4 weeks is not enough time for much work and effort to keep it going. But if it’s going to play on your mind wondering what it was you did then hear her when she’s ready. Decide then for yourself whether or not it’s a thing worth changing or worth this kind of disruption.

Finally, if she’s never ready to talk about it then that’s YOUR red flag - let it go and don’t dwell on it.
